    Something I've noticed as a new eBike owner is I was surprised how well the bike pedals when the motor is turned off. Sure its not the same as a pedal only bike, but it isn't miserable like I expected. If you had to ride a few miles on a dead battery back to the trailhead it wouldn't be the worst thing ever if there wasn't crazy climbs or tech

    Do some interviews with some e-mtb owners. I'm sure theres a few entertaining ones out there. Or interview some on the bike parks and ride with them for a bit.Or interview the bike park managers and ask what they think? Or review some of the bike parks and rank them for best e-mtb use.

    The gearing on an eBike is usually longer with that 34t front ring. That makes the steeper sections of climb even harder when you run out of gears. The whole balance of the bike is designed around the position of the motor and battery, remove one and it gets upset. The only reason I'd run without one is I really wanted to ride a certain trail and eBikes were otherwise banned.

    I think the skittish feeling and grip issues could be resolved with simple suspension tuning. The missing weight of the battery probably made the suspension too stiff.

    • @darrenleslie981
      @darrenleslie981 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm not convinced that the effect on the suspension would be all that different. Rider+bike+battery = 80kg+20kg+2kg (approx). So removing the battery will only make about a 2% difference to total weight. Most bike suspension isn't that tuneable to such a small difference (in my opinion) :-)

    This is just the sort of comparison I'm interested in. As a suggestion, what about a 'control' reference of the time down the trail on a comparable non eMTB? I ask because here at Christchurch Adventure Park (chairlift), eMTBs are welcome just so long as they don't have the battery installed (something to do with regulations around the carriage of dangerous goods - NZ govt policy, not CAP's). So when I get an eMTB, do I keep my Canyon Strive for park riding or do I just use my eMTB with the battery out out?

  • @ShaneNA01
    @ShaneNA01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does the battery provide any structural stiffness to the frame? I notice having it out, the frame is essentially missing half of the outside diameter of the downtube, could this potentially make the frame flex or even begin to ben under load over time?

Many of my EBike friends keep telling me that it becomes harder to paddle when you run out of juice or when I try to go faster than the max assisted speed. They discribe it like turning the motor by your own power with a certain resistance

    We ride our Kenevos in the WMBP . It’s not a problem regarding weight on the roll up trays, as our old DH bike from the early days weighed about the same as an Ebike.
    However, I would be hesitant to hang it on the hook by its front wheel - only because I’m not certain the lift attendant at the top , could remove it without a struggle. Not sure if It’d be healthy for the front rim, either?

    What I am missing is some explanation *WHY* the bike seems to handle less desirable without the battery ... given that „normal“ bikes weigh far less than an e-bike without the battery but still seem to handle better. I sounds logical to expect that the handling would improve without the battery ...
    Is this because of the weight distribution over the rest of the bike? So the balance might feel off without the battery?
    Anyway ... interesting topic!!

      Endorfin Fishing I’ve personally never had a problem with that. Just don’t touch the contacts or get it wet. They are recessed, so you would need a very specifically shaped conductor to accidentally short it out, and even then the battery protection would kick in so you would just end up with mild melting where it shorted.

    I think it makes the uphills a bit of fun. I also think that if you want to use the same amount of effort uphill compared to a clockwork you can? But is the comparison worth doing anymore? E-mtb can stand on their own two feet without having to be justified or compared against mtbs. It just sets up the 'angry mob' to moan.

    When I saw the heart rate so high going up in the van I imagined it as some sort of flintstone's type vehicle where all the passengers legs are the actual drive system.
    I came into this video expecting some sort of analysis of different motors and their drag. I think direct drive hub motors have the most drag but geared hub motors can freewheel completely without drag and mid-mount motors vary enormously depending on design. The old Bosch motors had a lot of drag but the new ones are massively improved in that regard. I was hoping for some analysis of the different brands of motors and how good they are when the battery is flat with regard drag. I'm none the wiser after watching the video. I feel the battery should be fitted at all times to protect the contacts and in case it has a structural purpose plus it will also weight the bike as intended for use.
    Of course if you have a e-bike conversion with a front hub motor you can quickly convert it back to a normal bike by fitting a standard front wheel and removing the battery. You can then use it and take it anywhere as a normal bike. If its a lighter geared hub motor then you don't even have to change the wheel it will freewheel without issues. I know that won't get much coverage on this channel which is mainly sponsored by higher end e-mountain bikes but there are many advantages to hub motors not just price. In this scenario where you are riding to the top of a hill by road or track and then riding it purely downhill on a trail I'm not sure a mid-mount motor has that many advantages, the extra torque is only really beneficial for steep inclines off-road but any hub motor will get you up any road going up hill. Admittedly a heavy direct drive hub motor is probably not ideal on the front for downhill tracks it would need to be on the back but a light geared hub motor could be on either wheel. Unfortunately like mid-mount motors the geared hub motors have more moving parts and therefore a shorter life and require more maintenance although still probably more reliable than most mid-mount motors.

    Wrist hr monitors are extremely inaccurate for cycling and point measurements like max or min hr, it can be off by up to 20 bpm or even more as demonstrated here with that 144bpm for close to maximum effort and 145bpm for sitting in a van. The only figure you can trust is average hr. If you want to know your heart rate at any single moment, or max or min hr a chest belt is the only way. Anything else is just Theranos bs.

    On anything with the older Bosch motors, no battery is awful. Way too much resistance internally in the motor for non battery riding at low speeds. Get it moving and you'll be right but it's very unpleasant on climbs and even flats to an extent.

    I know the is an ebike channel, but how about some objective content rather than just tailoring every 'test' or 'review' to make the ebike the holy grail of everything that can do no wrong. Btw i do like ebikes.just seems like the channel is basically an advertising platform for certain brands of ebike
