  • Hey guys in this step by step video I remove my external door handle. No Special tools required.
The most difficult part for me was removing the window handle.
Unfortunately I received the wrong replacement part so the installation portion will not be shown but you will get the idea.
Vehicle- 1998 Toyota Tacoma 4X4 No power locks.
I do not claim to be an expert.
I like to save money by doing it myself.
    Use at your own risk.
    Thank you for watching!

The window winder retainer pops out by running a rag back and forth really easy and you could also use the hole in the door designed for an extension to take out the rear screw. Great instructional video!

Awesome and friendly video!!! Just to point out something to make dis/re-assembly easier; there is a plastic sticker covering a hole over the left bolt holding the exterior handle in place. It is so you can use a socket extension for ease of access. Safe, happy wrenching guys!

A nicely done video. Easy to follow. This is a real service for old Toyota Tacoma owners who can't justify spending big bucks on minor repairs. I've even learned from your little mistakes, like the order of what to undo first, and also knowing what direction to pull things apart when you can't actually seen how it's attached and don't want to break it by forcing it, like the six little feet on the inside door handle. I used a bent paperclip, but "flossing" with the elastic band to get the window handle clip out looks like an easier solution. TY so very much.

As a guy who makes instructional TH-cam videos with working on motorcycles I can tell you this video is true art. Not many people understand how getting those close up shots while working at the same time is definitely skill. Great video, high quality, clear sounds, very straight forward instructions. All the way around you did a great job bud! I've gotta ask what camera you have and how do you have it attached so you can work at the same time?

I think this was my Canon SX610HS with my super old, barely usable, embarrassing to carry in public Tripod. It shoots in HD and has great close up shots. The views and angles are difficult to get but as you can see it pays off. In some videos I have to balance the camera and since the camera is in the way I have to use the screen to view the project.
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!

Thanks for the demo on how to do this task. I did one on the drivers door a couple years ago, but with your DIY video gave me all that I needed. I found that there was a rubber plug on the inside of the door that when removed, allowed an extension on the ratchet to access the bolt holding the lock side of the handle assembly and things went very well. My biggest challenge was to release the rod that connects to the lock that allows you to lock or unlock the door, even with that minor difficulty, within 15 minutes I had the old door handle out and was ready to install the new handle. I too, had trouble aligning the screw holes, on the lock side of the handle, but the problem was easily remedied by inserting the shaft of a long handled screwdriver through that access hole and prying up and over on that internal door tab that the screw had to go through to reach the screw hole in the handle. That little extra persuasion easily repositioned the tab so that everything aligned beautifully. The total job took less than an hour despite the problems I encountered.

Thanks for the video. It made the job not only doable, but straight-forward and rather fun. My Tacoma is a 2000, and the interior door panel splits, 3-4" below the window. If I had looked at it a little closer, I would have seen that removing the rear view mirror handle and trim is unnecessary. Other than that, it was a quick fun job - thanks to the tutorial here.

in 25 years of doing my own repair work, I have a few tips.1. clean off all surfaces you're about to work on. Brake cleaner on non-painted surfaces, or WD40 works well. I can't work on grimy stuff without getting injured anymore. I'd rather be able to see what I'm doing also.2. spray the parts you're trying to take apart with a good penetrant. I prefer PB Blaster for almost everything. Makes everything come apart so easy3. when aftermarket parts don't fit exact, unless you're working on a $50K car, just modify it to work. Those bolt holes would have aligned easy if you had hit the holes with a reaming type drill bit slightly, or just bent the mounting tabs inward. An $8 aftermarket part or an $80 part from the dealer plus the time spent for them to order it and 2 trips to order and pick up? No thanks. Thanks for the vid. Gives me an idea of what I am about to tackle on my 2003 Tacoma handle. The part is $8 shipped on ebay, and with 160K miles on the clock I won't be shy about reaming out some bolt holes.

I agree. Those after market parts still work but take a little adjustment. A good tip is place the handle in and align that harder hole first. Pry out that rubber seal on the door frame to access it with a driver. Don't tighten completely and then line up the "easy" hole. This is just a kinda PIA installation- overall a great job!

Thanks for creating and posting the video! For $15 on eBay I was able to buy a replacement and do this repair in minutes on my 1996 4Runner. The auto parts stores wanted $140 just for the replacement handle. I did have to file the channels down a tad so the lock would catch the retainer clips but all in all an easy job. And it's so much better than having to open the drivers door from the back seat!
    Again, thanks for this.

Just did this repair on a '02 Tacoma. A tip to give for future repairs At 5:54 you can remove that grommet by his finger to give you easy access to the second bolt. Got the part on eBay for $9.95 vs $80 at the dealer. Good luck.

Great video. Made it a breeze for me to change out the handle on my truck. One tip i would add is there is a hole in the interior of the door that allows you to insert a socket with extension to get to the bolt on the left of the hinge. On mine it was covered with a round piece of clear tape.

As a matter of fact: the day before, I was at an auto glass shop waiting for someone to install the door handle; but since the installer was out on an errand, I decided to come another day. Then I went home and went to look for some tutorials on YT on the subject; when I came across you video. Suddenly the light came on and I figured I'd try doing it myself. I was surprised at how easy it really was. Thanks again!

Just replaced my exterior and interior door handles. I’d taken the panels off before to replace some busted speakers, but had no clue about how to replace the exterior door handles. The bolt that holds the lock in place was the hardest part (taking it off and putting back on) very informative vid, Very much appreciated. Enjoyed the lightheartedness of it too 👍🏻

Extremely good video, and as you note, removing the window crank handle can be bad. FYI, an easier method, from another TH-cam video for getting the clip off is to slip a rag in there on the side behind the handle. You use it to engage one of the little rough ends of the clip, lifting it out from its little groove, and it pulls right out..

if you tap just a little bit of that piece of sheet metal with the hammer I think you could line it up and put the bolts in its not even an eighth of an inch different.

Useful vid, mahalo Bruddah. Very classic Hawai’i vid. The things I know that make it HI.
    It’s a Tacoma
    Doves, roosters
    And the word cherry

if your door panels are that dirty, take them to a car wash along with your dirty carpet and seats. Does a awesome job and dry after a couple of days.

The mechanics charged me $135 for this & they left the door handle loose as a goose. They wanted to charge me an additional $200 to replace it again...
I showed this video to my dad & he fixed it in a few minutes.
From now on I'm looking at TH-cam before I go to a mechanic lol

For the bolt at 5:52, remove that circular tape that looks like a bandaid and use an extension to reach the bolts. It's much easier this way.

doe the locking cylinder metal tab goes behind the door tab or behind it?

Metal fatigue. The door has been tanned reshaped itself from so many lifts you would have to tap it back down with a pry bar probably

If you pop the plastic cap off you could use your ratchet with extension to loose the door handle screw
