My brother said for years that this was the greatest game ever played. He was 14 yrs older. I finally saw it on ESPN Classic in the 00's. I think it's right up there with the 1986 WS for drama. This game definitely ranks among the absolute best I've ever seen. RIP Johnny.
Everytime I see these videos I cry, growing up in Queens N.Y and going to Shea Stadium was the best.... Darryl Strawberry was my favorite player Let's go Mets Let's do it again.....
And the plane ride back to New York after that game is what urban legend is made of. I hear that they really celebrated on that flight. A continuation of the post game locker room celebration in Houston, on that flight, all the way back home.
still F'n hurts damn it. what also really made me mad was that most of the series games started around 2 in the afternoon. WTF, I would be sitting in school and the only thing I could think about was the game that I was missing. My mother would pick me up and the I would immediately ask who's winning . I then sat on the couch my mom was an even bigger baseball fan than I was. So the game was already on. Even though the Astros won a world series in 2017 this will always be MY team. The Oiler Buffalo game hurt almost as much as this one.
On this day in 1986, the New York Mets beat the Houston Astros 7-6 in 16 innings to win their 1st National League pennant since 1973 after Jesse Orosco struck out Kevin Bass for the final out and advanced to the 1986 World Series against the Boston Red Sox.
Manager took Knepper out one batter too late. This has happened in many postseasons. Nothing to be embarrassed about. The Mets won 108 that year and were capable of last inning comebacks, as the Sox found out.
Yeah bcuz he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that if the Astros held on to win game 6 that the Mets were NOT in a million years beating Mike Scott and winning game 7
Roger McDowell was definitely the unsung hero of this game. Bcuz he pitched like 4+ innings and didn't give up a run. Remember one run and the Mets lose and face Mike Scott in game 7 😮
I was in the Astrodome in July and watched the Astros and Mets play a 16 inning marathon that year, 1986. Astros came out on top tht night. we didn't leave the stadium until after 1 am. Little did I know it was a prelude to a 16 inning NLCS all-time classic. Those '86 Astros were special. Phil Garner, Kevin Bass. Jose Cruz. Nolan Ryan. Those '86 Mets were amazing. Dykstra and Backman were on base constantly. Two of the best National League teams ever. What would a Game 7 have been like?
They gave the MVP to Mike Scott. In the World Series, Mets down to their last strike, with the infamous "Congrats Boston, World Champions" on the diamond vision at Shea, the MVP for that 86 World Series was going to go to Bruce Hurst. The rest is history.
@@dashx1103 yet if Mike Scott hadn’t been so outstanding I really don’t know if the Astros would have won a single game. The only reason this series was even a contest was bc of Mike Scott.
I took time off from work to watch this on TV. I remember pounding the floor and yelling Mookie's name when he got the RBI. Knepper had shut out the Mets in the regular season. The Astros played a great series and could certainly hold their heads high after this one. One of the last true clean baseball season before Canseco, McGuire and the rest of them started using PED's
I was an 8-year-old huge Mets fan. Some younger kid was over at my house during the game and wanted to play with me. I kept saying, "sure kid, the game is almost over." After about 100 times of saying that he finally gave up and went home. What a game!
Listening on my tiny am radio while at work. Lasted so long I had to start walking to Penn to get home. Saw the win watching a tv outside of a Radio Shack on 6th. High fives all the way to Penn Station. 🎉🎉🎉
What a great memory! Wish the Mets would provide me with one of those. Got some great ones but none of them involve winning the World Series I’m afraid
Incredible game. I was in 9th grade(living in Maryland). The game started when I was in my last period Algebra class ( 1:30 Eastern) and went until about 7pm. Orosco was clutch at the end. Mets proved their mettle against 2 very worthy opponents.
I started the game as a 14 year old Met fan, snd ended it as as gray-haired 14 year old Met fan.

1980 NLCS Phillies Astros All five games, especially game five.
The greatest opera in baseball history. The greatest game ever played.

i went every friday night from 1984-1989 in either the loge or mezzanine behind home plate
This Mets team had balls
It was a team laden with special group dynamics. So many contributions from EVERYONE.

I was 10 years old watching this, still the best baseball I ever saw
The next time these two meet, it won't be for a pennant. It'll be for all the marbles.

What happened to the Astros? They had the game won. They went to the 9 inning with a 3-0 lead, and they choked.
They were celebrating too early thinking they had it locked up. The mets that year were never out of it until the last pitch was thrown.
I think Knepper just ran out of gas. The location and break on his pitches wasn't the same.
Manager took Knepper out one batter too late. This has happened in many postseasons. Nothing to be embarrassed about. The Mets won 108 that year and were capable of last inning comebacks, as the Sox found out.
1986 national league champions New York Mets my dad remembers that day
I forgot that Keith Jackson was still doing baseball as late as 86, and that Senor Smoke and Davey Lopes ever played for the Astros. Awesome stuff.
108 games that team won, and you can see why.. Loaded..
Knepper was a man on a mission. I've never seen him so animated during a game.
pitched the game of his life, and just got some bad breaks and terrible relief from Dave Smith( who was awful in the series)
Yeah bcuz he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that if the Astros held on to win game 6 that the Mets were NOT in a million years beating Mike Scott and winning game 7
A lot of ifs.😂😂😂
The 1986 New York Mets will always be number one in my book
This was the greatest playoff ever ... The Game was exciting and the fans were electric. Both Teams were good and they both played well.
Roger McDowell was definitely the unsung hero of this game. Bcuz he pitched like 4+ innings and didn't give up a run. Remember one run and the Mets lose and face Mike Scott in game 7 😮
This and tied with 1969
one of the biggest Mets wins Ever
They didn't want to face Mike Scott.

They should have won it in the ninth inning.
Jesse Orosco should have been the MVP for the Series.
Absolutely not. The only reason this even went to 6 games was bc of Mike Scott. This team could hit nolan ryan but couldn't hit mike scott.

This was an incredible game. The Mets couldn’t break through until the ninth
1986 MBL playoffs are the best I've seen.
Great game!!! The Best NLCS game LGM

In 1986 Gary Carter catching the final pitches in the post season off of Jesse Orosco and jumping into his arms.
Look how skinny the players were back then. No roids back then.
Different time. Strawberry was well over 7 feet tall, yet only weighed 127 pounds in 1986. Amazing.
Yup. In 1989 the Roid Brothers on Oakland were the trend, unfortunately.
OMG.. did one of the Umps steal a Mets hat? WTF, whats the statute of limitations? 15:58 #LGM
"Now ..... they've got a plane to destroy" 😆😆
I always liked watching Bob Knepper pitch - such a nice, easy motion. Just like playing catch.
He screwed up in the last inning.
Let's go Mets Baseball ⚾🇺🇸❤️🙏✝️

Man Kevin Bass didn’t have a good game
Well said. Offline throws to home, missing the cutoff man and of course, striking out to end the game.
Man, Billy Hatcher didn't play a very good center field in this game.
I forgot how bad and lazy of a fielder Santana was lol
This one still hurts.

Amazing
I forgot how similar the time periods of 80's baseball and today really are: the era of douchebag jewelry and bad haircuts.
