So yeah, played Caylus when it came out and haven't again since. So consider this a review of Caylus 1303 on its own merits. As the J of 2005-6 had a lot less patience for euro games than the J of now and did not care for Caylus one bit at the time. Another great example of a game that if i gave out a silver medal would get one. As its very solid and enjoyable. It just didn't leave me with that wow factor that the gold medal demands.
Your camera work has come up a notch mate. Strange thing to say maybe but you have hit the exact right speed of the zoom-ins and zoom-outs. Not rushed, not dawdling and suits the pace of the narration. A little more magic for the vid. nice 1. Dan
"unlike a lot of modern worker placement games, this one has plenty of ways to mess with your opponents." Yes! Yesss! YESSSSSSS! BWHAAHAHA! (original Caylus is meaner though)
@@WoodenFilms Honestly with how much prices have gone up in general, this will not be a cheap game, but there is a lot of content to be had and if you want to get it now you will have to deal with the Amazon price or get lucky at a FLGS. When the next kickstarter for the simpler sequel sleeping gods comes out, they will be releasing more games and I imagine prices might be slightly better than it is now. I would say, watch some reviews and how to plays, maybe a play through and see if it is going to be for you, and if you can then justify the price, just go for it. If you have doubts, dont do it and wait to see if the price goes down over time.
I played the original Caylus literally for the first time last week. I enjoyed it a lot! There's a lot of strategy to it. Some thing were simplified for this in ways that are mostly eliciting a shrug from me with regards to "is it better or worse?" as it's mostly just different, mostly simpler. The variable powers and the greater amount of workers that are getting juggled around seem like the biggest change, which might be fun to play around with. The board art looks a little flat, but the other art and components look very nice.
Yeah, im not sure they quite marketed this one well. People into Caylus itself will probably be so/so on the changes, and if you like the old one, do you need a new one. And yet its not super clear its really probably best for folks who haven't played the original at all.

"The Provost: this guy is a complete bastard" would make a pretty good 3 second Caylus review.
100%. He real is the defining feature of the game and such a knob.
Provost: "NO TURN FOR YOU!" I'll add this one to my list of games to try!
Caylus was set in 1289. Caylus 1303 came out 14 years after the original, hence the 1303 year.
That is good to know

Cheers. Fun fact, there is no video camera work in the video. It's all still photos animated post production.
I will forever have a soft spot for the original, but I'd love to try 1303 at some point, preferably before splurging for a copy.

How similar is it to Le Havre? and which one do you prefer?
Quite different, I feel le havre is all about the engine building whereas this one is more about smart worker placement
Thank you for this! I was wondering if you have played Charterstone?
Yep. Wasn't a fan of charterstone. I reviewed it in one of my "games on steam" videos because i played it mostly on the app
@@3MBG Oh okay. My wife and I have thoroughly enjoyed The Adventures of Robin Hood and are looking for our next narrative co-op game. Any suggestions?
If you want something a bit more chunky go for Sleeping Gods, it’s a masterpiece in open world exploration narrative story telling
@@matthewpeterson3926 I looked at it but was shocked by the sticker price on Amazon. It looks fun though. Is there a better place to buy it?
