alot of art in the comic is traced
"The Greek Doom" sounds like one of those "finish it in under 30 minutes and it's free" dishes in an ethnic restaurant 😅
Haha
The Greek Doom began after the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC and ended when Greece was integrated into the Roman Republic in 146 BC
@@CushionSappThat's what I'm calling that period from now on.
“The Greek Doom” happens hours after you eat Tzatziki sauce that’s spoiled. Rip and tear on the toilet.
@@MiloTheMightyDudeThe Period after that is Greek Doom II: Hell on Rome.
Sad this masterpiece never got the recognition it deserved. Thanks for shining a light on this forgotten magnum opus.

As someone who is of Greek heritage, I am at least glad to get more of an idea of the Greek gaming fandom was like back in the 90s. It’s interesting to hear that the magazines were so hardcore and that this one had such a basic name lol. Anyways good video! Greece’s retro gaming scene deserves more representation and this is a good example of that!
I try to bring representation from other countries when possible ^^
Hardcore magazines... nah.... :D
Not as hardcore as the UK ones, which had page 3 girls.
But the language and the humour was... "edgy 90s" for sure.
@@RetroGamesCouple Oh I've heard stories lol
they were so hardcore that one of them had a section in which they wrote offensive fanfic where the editor of the magazine was the evil demon who whipped his workers to work harder and they called him sarcsat which was sort for flesh satan.. So hardcore that they made a comic about violence in football matches where the main hero was getting ready for war with armor and spike boots and rocket launchers and when they asked him if he s a quake hero he said "no i am a penalty giver in the greek football tournament" because they beat the crap out of him in one occasion. They were HARDCORE and did not care about pc, because who is gonna buy those magazines? People who dont care what society thinks. I still trying to track one of the games given in one magazine that was an unreleased rts with dinosaurs but i cant remember the name.
(Reckless)@@arkgaharandan5881 That was normal "kafrila" humour back then -- all in good fun. Not really hardcore stuff... :/
As a Greek i'm so glad there was a Greek doom comic in my country, It makes me know that there were Greeks who very loves doom, but it didn't get much response
I'm glad I could highlight part of your country's history ^^
I say this because in Greece the doom community is very small :(
@@Nektar_don't beat yourself about it man it's better than nothing!
I recall that certain Greek videogame magazines in the 90s and early 2000s often had some pages devoted to fan made comics ( sometimes even maybe commissioned by the magazine itself ). This particular "GAMES" magazine, I can recall it existing until the mid-2000s but I don't believe I ever bought a issue ... They definitely don't exist anymore
Thank you for the extra bit of context ^^
As a Greek person myself, I think this is a fascinating little oddity. I've never heard of this before.
I'm so bloody curious to see what this thing is all about, kinda makes me sad we didn't get the next 2 issues. XD
haha, I'd love to read the rest
Scar is actually descendant of Hiro, the protagonist of Daikatana. This ties this comic, neatly, into the Romeroverse.
I joke, they looked similar.
It would be funny if true though
Well... Must have missed this gem. I haven't seen a lot of magazines having companion comics (aside from Perris and Katya comics that came with the RAM magazine). I wonder if some store has any of the issues from Game magazine.
Good luck finding it! ^^
I think the scene at 8:00 is supposed to be a cyberdemon leading a group of imps or former humans to the unnamed soldier. Thats what I see anyway.
Yeah that might be it. The art makes it hard to tell what is going on >_>
it really does, took me a couple seconds to even tell if it was a leg or an arm in the image.@@st1ka
i thought it was an arm as well but obviously its a Cybie leg
The "ugly" art is actually pretty common art style in the 90's, it sort of an experimental time period with the art with the "Rough art style" where they use alot of stripe shadows. DC and Marvel comics at some point also use these style, like in Punisher from the 90's
Yeah, but it looked better when DC and Marvel did it imo :P
@@st1ka oh yeah that because they do it with style. This feel more like "emulate" the style but don't know the technique. It kinda feel like your high school friend doing some doodle comic while ignoring teachers boring lesson
@@hanchimanAs a european who grew up in the nineties, I recognise this style. It was all over the place in our zines and underground comics back then. It's pretty obvious they're trying to emulate the "hyper-realism" style that was popular in American comics (Liefield, Jiim Lee, most of Image comics), but they were either self-taught or the products of traditional European art schools, who detested the idea of commercial work(they still do that!) and and thus purposefully didn't teach them things like varying line thickness; If it was a skill that could be used for commercial work like advertising, tattooing or cartooning, but not for "fine art", then they wouldn't teach it(that part has changed).
@@nidhoggstrike I also live in Europe, so of course the "local comics" that I sometimes read was a bit awful but on the same time a bit "NSFW" types that have alot of nudity and violence, (I wasn't even 16 or 18 yet but still read it in my local library that have a comic section haha).
Early Milo Manara had this type of art style but the way he drew woman still look nice though.
Also if you check out the box cover for the Polish indie game Franko Crazy Revenge, it kinda looks like this Doom comic
@@hanchiman " I wasn't even 16 or 18 yet but still read it in my local library that have a comic section haha". Dude, literally me. The connection between my sexual awakening and franco-belgian comics is...no wait, I am not going to overshare.
But I associate this art style more with punk zines and the various anarcho-communist publishers that were small, and obscure, but very well connected all across europe, so if you lived near some squatters and occasionally went to their concerts you had access to zines from all across Europe. I believe many of those artists also worked for the gaming magazines, which as St1ka pointed out in the video, would do some pretty weird stuff to differentiate themselves from more business-oriented things like PC World.
"Greek Doom" sounds like how the first God of War was pitched before it was given the green light to be developed.
Haha yep
We need a doom mod with Greek doom guy face in the status bar.
haha
The name of the magazine being "Games" is hilarious. It's like opening up a restaurant and naming it "Restaurant".
haha right?
Looking at the other marine's design... This comic seems to be something that probably was never needed, but it's looking like it was going to an origin story for the Chaingunner (Heavy Weapons Dude) enemy.
oh that's definitely possible
They died like humans with ugly faces!

Wondering if this is about a Greek-themed Doom, or Doom made in Greece hmm 🤔
A doom... spin off? Prequel? Not sure.
It's also not clear if it's official or not
I am Greek, 44 and an avid gamer since 1990. Well "Games" from its first issue in 1996 till its inevitable demise in 2010 (Greek economic crisis and the internet) was a magazine that in my opinion was something like a portal to introduce new ,usually younger, gamers to the world of video games and let them find their own way later so to speak. The reviews were generally lackluster, generic and either overwhelmingly generous or outright damning depending on the relations the publishing company had with the local video game representative companies. True fact. Nintendo Greece representative Nortec cut all ties with Games magazine after an article that stated that the PSP was a better portable than the DS without actually providing any actual comparison.
Now DOOM was a phenomenal hit for the PC gaming community back in the day and Greece was no exception. Perhaps they wanted to ride the hype train and increase sales. The artwork looks awful because it probably is just fan art from a reader. (btw his name is Giorgos Ballantinos as I could barely make it out in 4:39) Terzopoulos printing company, the publisher of Games had decades of publishing history and an absolute plethora of titles of all sorts including the official Disney licensing in Greece so I guess it was pretty easy for them to find an overeager reader with some artistic capacity to publish his take on DOOM.
Thanks for this gem of an article. I never knew of this comic's existence either.
Thank you so much for the extra context. Glad you liked the video ^^
We might have a physical copy of this somewhere in the attic!! :O
Being kids back then, had no idea it was specifically made in and for our country!!!

@@st1kawe don't worry. We are quite aware of how much non-wonderful the country we live in is ;)

Hope you dive in the world off unoficial brazillian comics
I'd like to some day. Any place where I can download them?
This reminds me of the comics I used to draw/write. I kind of love it too, tbh
hehe
The scene with the cacodemon looked like there was a panel that had a picture with a guy drawn over it. Incredible work
The art is definitely unique xD
This is one of my favorite series from you.😊
haha thank you. Sadly the video is flopping hard
The drawings of this comics reminds me a lot like how I draw as a kid, but overall it’s pretty much amazing that how people around foreign countries can make their own stories based around famous games minus the slur they’ve given here.
yeah, the slur should have never gotten past editors
@@st1ka This reminded me of the very much unlicensed (probably) Super Contra comic I had in China when I was young. Which is so wild, it had Bill transform into a tank and Lance transform into a fighter jet mid-story. And the famous 30 lives code was explained away with them being combat cyborgs, and their additional lives were their auto-repair function.
I do not recall this. Greek gamer here. Games was not my magazine of choice at the time.
it does seem that this comic is pretty forgotten
7:52 judging by how it looks, the friendly marine bumped into a room with a Cacodemon, a Cyberdemon (one of those legs is mechanical, just like the Cyberdemon's) and the people on the left side of the panel are imps (it was hard to see at first, but they have imp spikes jutting from their bodies if you look closely).
My guess is he just waltzed into a room where a Cyberdemon (maybe the one that disappeared earlier?) is leading a small group of imps and Cacodemons.
aaah makes sense. The comic is very confusing
John Carmack -“Story in a game is like story in a porn movie, he said. “It's expected to be there, but it's not important.”
haha, that does sound like a Carmack thing to say :P
I would be so happy to read the complete series, but I'm not sure somebody will find the other 2 parts. This looks awesome!
Sadly, as far as I know, the other 2 parts were never even made
The Brazilian and Greek video game comic teams should’ve teamed up to make an ultimate degenerate classic comic. Maybe a Shadow the Hedgehog themed one.
haha
Holy fuck...
I remember this shit when it came out. Never thought i would see this again.
haha
0:17 , You mean Marissa level - Italy, right 😁😁😁😁 World Tour Mode confirmed!!

I had one of those e3 comics and sold it on ebay. It was really basic and hard to come by. It sold for around 100 gbp. People aren't really missing anything and only for serious Collectors of doom items.
yeah I've seen reviews of the e3 comic on youtube and it's pretty bad
@st1ka yeah I found it in a pile of books at a local car boot, thought it looked cool and didn't know much about it. Its no shakespeare 😅

i love that art style :D
Haha
And here I thought the official DOOM comic was ridiculous! What an interesting piece of history lol. I don't think the main character is doomguy, judging by the art, the person they talk about teleporting looks like the real one.
Also yes, the "took you long enough" needs to be circulated around the entire internet.
glad you liked the video :D
I had a few issues of Games magazine back in the day. It even had a popular tv show on Mad tv. Funny thing is that Games was considered a magazine for wheenies and PlayStation babies compared to the edgier Gamepro.
Hah I had no idea
lol. The plot reminds me of those unlicensed Russian books with TMNT, Predator, Aliens, all kinds of horror characters cross-over stories, lol

wow as a long time doom fan i knew about the e3 comic but never this
Yeah this is super obscure
I wonder if they were trying to make this a GI Joe crossover? Flint as Doom Guy vs. SKAR (Joe villians that replaced Cobra temporarily during the mid-late 1990s). Ironically like Hasbro with GI Joe ARAH/Extreme will still don't know what happened to Flint or SKAR. PS Looks like a Street Fighter Alpha crossover as well with Charlie, meaning Guile should be getting vengeance against the Spider Mastermind and not Bison
Who knows? It's definitely something weird xD
Perhaps the manuals and other supplementary materials had a horrible translation into Greek, so the writers of this comic did not have the best to work with.
As for that confusing panel at 8:06 I could have sworn there's a map in the original Doom where the player is up on a ledge like that looking out over a lower level in the floor that has Imps (The people on the left), a Cyberdemon (The big thighs in the center), and Pinkies (which is what that demon on the right most side of the panel looks like to me, it looks like just the head of a Pinky sticking out) in it.
Oh you might be right. Also, regarding the manual. It's also possible the creators only played pirated copies as was customary at the time :P
That cover you used to show the greek magazine games idk if you found it from the seller on eBay of that exact issue
Honestly can't remember, I just did a google image search
@st1ka ah well I came across a ebay listing for that issue seems like the only one that survived time may of been the same image you found on google
@kyky121911 I don't know which issue has that comic issue mind you ^^
@st1ka ah yea I know I'm just saying for preservation since there's absolutely nothing on this magazine and make for a fun follow up video looking through it
@kyky121911 sadly this video is flopping hard. So I doubt I'll make a follow up :/

The art style reminds me of the cromartie high school anime 😂

This reminds me of a Spanish gaming magazine (I have only two issues, one with a long preview article and interview about Final Fantasy 7, the other with the second part of the same article) and this magazine included a free short magazine that covered Japanese popular media, and lots of nude women. It was amazing, the 90s.

How was I not aware of this? I must have missed the specific issues the comics were in. However it does not surprise me at all that it exists.

It's weird that the plot of these comics are basic yet the games are so goddamn good
Yep very true
Not really, imo. As John Carmack said, "story in a game is like story in a porn movie... Its not that important."
I'd like to say that those who made this had the same philosophy, and made it as barebones as possible, but judging from the overall quality, that's quite generous.
Still a better plot than the Doom games.
