3:36 'Dragão Brasil' was not the Brazilian version of 'Dragon Magazine', altough it was an RPG magazine. 'Dragon Magazine' also ran an official licensed version in Brazil, with that very same name, for 14 issues. 'Dragão Brasil', created by Cassaro, had a much longer run, and it is still running digitally.

Just to clarify, no, at that point it wasn't official that Noob Saibot was Bi-Han. That was, at best, a fan theory that only became canon in MK Deception

Yup Noob was nothing more than a black pallet swap scorpion for a long time. Same goes for Jade, Reptiles and smoke. They were all pallet swaps.
Always thought that Mortal Kombat actually looks better when it's done in this kind of Western stylization or hyper-stylization rather than the realism they have gone after so often. I think the art style in this one is amazing.
Insanely unusual artstyle that I would be happy to enjoy as a kid...

i really liked that art style since it was closer to anime like dragonball than american cartoons
and their rpg had archetypes inspired by tokusatsu and anime, it was called Defenders of Tokyo
It looks like a mishmash of early 00's X-Men artists. Mostly Joe Madureira. Joe Mad could do quiet moments just as well as action ones though. One of the best issues of the Onslaught crossover is just the team having breakfast in the partly ruined school in the aftermath of the storyline.
Ah yes I remember those. The comics were full of untamed, unsupervised horny nerd energy (as pretty much everything in the 90s). They were violent, they were wild, they were heavily sexualised... And they were awesome!

Knowing my favourite fighting game having a weird comic series made in a foreign country is also connected to one of the most memorable runs of DC history os crazy adding this to comic book lore

I'm surprised with how much of the two other Brazilian comics(the infamous Mega Man and the oddly decent Street Fighter) you covered made what could best described as a good take on MK4.

About Noob Saibot, by the time of MK4 it wasn't estabilished that he was Bi-Han, his story and motivations were unclear, except for the fact that he was one of the Brotherhood of Shadows. In MK Trilogy we can even see Kuai Liang, Noob Saibot and the masked Sub Zero, supposed to be Bi Han (they didn't have that names either). This was only revelead in Deception, and further details came on the reboot.
As a Brazilian kid I thought the artwork pretty weird back then, but it was Mortal Kombat, so I enjoyed it a lot. And I couldn't complain about the art on Tanya's backstory, it was pretty... Interesting, let's say.
It's clear to me that they went through the home port with a fine-toothed comb for content- probably with a Strategy Guide or list of codes fresh from the printer. Not only does it feature Goro (who was an exclusive sub-boss), but secret characters like Noob Saibot, KItana, and even friggin' Meat make appearances in this comic.
Which, coming after the Street Fighter and MegaMan writers that didn't take know anything about the games (and the latter didn't WANT to), it feels like a cool change of pace.
Yeah the artist clearly knew what it wanted to focus on with Tanya xD

We were amateurs back then, not only many just rip-off trending artists, like Mcfarlane and Liefield, but sometimes we simply copy entire pannels from them. Dark, but funny times to be an artist here! And, no, I didn't draw for any of those comics, but was part of the manga scene of the time.

I am a brazilian, and I collected the Dragão Brasil's magazine, and it was so, so cool for us. It had a lot of cool stuff, and by chance of fate, I had one of the writers as a friend, ways after the magazine ended

Basically, the master system is to Brazil what the NES is to America.
The difference is they keep making new master system models and they keep selling. Similar to how the nes mini sold well in the US
Today, not much. But yeah, the Master System and the PS2 were extremelly popular here. We also have a lot of pirate, bootleg games in both platforms. There is a edited version of PES called Bomba Patch, that was more popular than PES or FIFA for a while.
The weirdest part was reading these as a kid and not realizing these were exclusive to brazil xD

TECTOY is a brazilian underrated gem. They've ported Duke Nukem 3D to Mega Drive (Sega Genesis).
7:12 You probably already know this since i saw you hearted other comments saying it, but i just wanted to explain it a bit more detail. In the original Brazillian Portuguese dialogue, Jarek calls Jax a "Negão", which basically translates to "Big black man/dude" in Portuguese, and its in no way meant to be a racial slur here in Brazil, and its mostly used to refer to well, big black dudes, it's just the augmentative version of the word "Negro" (which is also not a racial slur here in Brazil and in most South American Countries). I imagine that translator was not really being edgy, i think that he must have thought that since "Negro" can be used as a racial slur in the USA, "Negão" would probably mean something like the N-word, or at least that would be my guess... or maybe he was really being Edgy and thought this was an opportunity for that, idk... Great video btw, much love from Brazil 👍

I, too, greatly enjoyed MK Mythologies Sub Zero back on the PS1 during it's hey day. I rented it over a weekend, I believe, to beat the game.

About the N-word, in portuguese wasn't the Brazilian equivalent word ,but another word very similar to the american N-word but lacking the same offensive charge. The Brazilian slur more cloe resemble the n-word at the time is write completely different and start with c.
yep, I saw some other Brazilians commenting that the word used was "negão", but that in Brazil it's not considered a slur. It's like saying "dude". So it seems that the unnoficial translater was being edgy.

Hey dude! Great video! I remember that comic, I'm from Brazil, in fact I'll try to find those in portuguese to check out the lines. Also, this kind of art (the distortion and, textures, woman and stuff) I guess Fabiano was on the 90's hype, which we can check out A LOT of arts, even Jim Lee's on X-Men, also, Gen 13, Wildcats, and, as you even mentioned, McFarlane's Image Spawn and his previous Spidey arts.

Well, time to comment again to please the finicky TH-cam Algorithm. Of course, St1ka, it was a pleasure to watch this again though - your recent videos on weird video game comics has been super entertaining! I know there's been weird video game comics forever (Valiant Comics did the "Nintendo Comics System" briefly in the 'States back in the day - everything was a "System" with them for awhile, like the "Nintendo Cereal System" being the official name for the OG Nintendo cereal), but Brazil's take on things is really interesting! Do they have their own Sonic comics?
At any rate, I really do love the art in this. It may look odd in places, but overall, it definitely reminds me of Joe "JoeMad" Madureira's stuff (Darksiders, Battle Chasers) and Adam Warren's stuff (the American Dirty Pair comics, a TON of art for PSM: Playstation Magazine here in the 'States back in the day), as well as Image Comics' output like you pointed out. It just looks cool, and while the storytelling suffers from myriad issues, yeah I think I'll take a look at this series! Thanks for mentioning that "Victory" series by the same artist too; I went and hunted down the 4 issues of that via NewKadia and MyComicShop and ordered 'em. Looking forward to seeing what that's about too! I love discovering stuff like this.

What is interesting about the MK4 comic is that all that edgyness and violence from the Megaman and SF comics fit a lot better with an already edgy and bloody franchise like Mortal Kombat.

Very cool comic! i wish i had the chance to read this stuff back then when Malibu comics stoped producing it´s MK comics, I can see clearly that Eduardo Francisco the main artist was fan of John Madureira´s work, because his style looks alot like the material Madureira produced in his series "battle chasers"

This comic was cool. The people who produced it still work with comics and RPGs today (and are successful at it). In addition to this comic, the Mortal Kombat RPG was launched with rules and a ready-made adventure. They made the same type of product with Megaman, Street Fighter and Final Fight.
You point out the art being odd, but the art seems pretty “'90s knockoff Joe Mad” to me. If this comic is coming post-MK4, is might also be coming post Madureira’s PSM covers too.

OMG, yes, i live in Uruguay next to brazil, and we got a magazine called "Top Kids" that had video game related things, and it had this comic in spanish, it was pretty weird yeah. I remember the magazine came with MK action figures and fatalities and those stuff. I had like 10 years or so

Huge props to the brazilin team. You can tell they respect the lore and game series. The stick figure fatalities(15:19) are probably the result of budget cuts. That being said, I agree Tanya was handled poorly. Tanya could have jumped Kai after he defeats the undead mooks. Eventually, Tanya knocks Kai into huge fan blade. Tanya picks up a win and Kai dies with dignity.
Yeah I'm pretty sure the stick figures bit was the result of a tight deadline:/

Weirdly enough, my trade paperback collection of Spawn seems to omit that issue... instead just showing a rough McFarlane sketch of that scene and having Spawn wake up in his alley. Probably because of all the meta content, the numerous unofficial cameos (most prominently Superman), and the official Cerebus cameo... and the fact that it's a non-canon happy ending for Spawn.

you could talk about ''el cazador de aventuras'' wich was an argentinian adult dark humor comic featuring copyrighted characters from marvel, dc, dragon ball, star wars, etc. it was very popular in the 90s and was released in brazil as well. they recently made a movie adaptation wich features deadpool and wolverine. the comic was made by ariel olivetti, mauro cascioli and jorge lucas, they all work at marvel and dc nowadays, the art in the comics is excellent but the stories are... something else.

@@st1ka Well sadly he passed away a while ago. He was a Mexican comic book artist, did what is considered the most succesful comic book in the Mexican industry Metorix 5.9, and had a sexy female character similar to that Sonya. Then again, that quasi anime style was popular in the late 90s and early 2000s in México, and perhaps Latín América seeing this comic now.

Yeah, MK4 introduced a lot of characters that were simply brushed aside. At least it gave us Quan-chi and Fujin though.

Marcelo Cassaro é ótimo, tenho vários quadrinhos dele e me divirto demais. E a arte da Érica Awano é boa demais, eles estão trabalhando juntos de novo em um quadrinho chamado "Paladina". Recomendo demais, apesar da produção ser lenta
