I love that you talk, with amusement, about mistakes you make and debate whether to let them lie or rip out and redo. It's encouraging to hear that experts make the same mistakes all the rest of us make. Examine it, figure out where it went wrong, laugh, and either carry on or redo. A terrific attitude.
Another entertaining and informative episode, I love it! So many exciting things are happening in the shop. Congratulations!! I'm glad to see Garfield Grizzly is thriving, and I think "Pickled Beets" is a great name. The tutorials on swatching is a wonderful idea. Thank you so much for putting this together for us. :)
Great episode ladies. Just a tip too about swatching, I take a picture of my sample and post wash info and upload it to Ravelry, either on the stash page of that yarn and/or the project page. Always have it with me then if out shopping and/or can’t find the swatch 😁
Every second Friday can’t come soon enough 🌞😉 you brighten my Friday evening every time. Love your tutorials on Swatching. Extremely helpful. Looking forward to more. Hugs from Kingston 🇨🇦🧶✨
All your yarn is so beautiful. The name that comes to my mind for your magenta colored Garfield Grizzley is "Ewe Can't Beet It." I really enjoy your podcasts. I would love to visit your yarn shop one day to buy some of your beautiful yarn.
I love Friday nights when your podcast comes out - especially welcome after this week. Thanks for answering my podcast lounge question - sounds like a lot of fun. Love the tutorial too, can't wait for more.
Fleece & Harmony It’s like visiting with old friends! So down to earth, funny...bordering on hysterical most of the time ...and such knitting role models: Start; frog; start again; and a perseverance that is so encouraging. 👏👏👏👏👏
So enjoy your podcasts! Would you consider doing a tutorial on the different plies and their characteristics? I've knitted for many years, and I've never known anything about the ply of yarn--guess it's similar to the short row situation you mentioned.
Thank you so much for the tutorials you are making! I keep hearing knitters say they just knit a different size because they like a certain “fabric”, but I’ve never understood how to do the math. I’m so so excited to see how to do that from your future tutorials! And, Jennifer, I’m with you on Wizard of Oz. It’s my husband and daughter’s favorite movie, but I’ve never enjoyed it once they get to Oz lol. Thanks for another great podcast, ladies 😊

Great podcast ladies! I really enjoy your podcast. Great job on the tutorials as well, I look forward to future ones. I like pickled beets for the yarn name!
The other tip I've seen is to knit a series of yarnover-K2togs near one edge to remind you of the needle size. So for size 8, 8 yarnovers. That way if the tag is lost, you still have that information at hand. I usually do it a row past the initial garter stitch border, and make another border if I change the needle size and do the next needle size, too. I think I learned this is an Amy Herzog class - she is a big proponent of swatching, too!
More Night with Stars, please. I had the credit card all warmed up...but not fast enough. Thanks for your podcast...a much needed break from the world.
Joanne the over zealous newbie here 😁. Another delightful edition as usual ladies, and thank you for the shout out, but I think the phrase you were looking for there, was (as my Gramma used to say) “soft in the head”, not “mathematical” 🤪. Luckily I purchased an additional 4 Jennifer Beale patterns, bringing me up to 8 .... suppose there’s a fan girl discount? 😁. Stitch night tickets bought and paid for!
Another fantastic episode. I’ve got to look into Garfield Grizzly. Anything with neps is definitely a go! Rowan has always been a fantastic company with the best people at every level. So glad you guys are adding them into your shop.
Pickled Beets is a perfect name for that colour. I know many people that panic if they don't have at least two bottles in the house at all times. It's a thing.
I love pickled beets! In my family, we eat brown beans with fried onions and potatoes with cornbread and pickled beets. There’s something about that sweet tang that plays off the blandness of the beans and potatoes. On another note, I grew up canning pickled beets with my mom. It was my favorite thing to process along with apple butter. (Now my mouth is watering!)
I don't know what name you decided for the dark purple color, but I LOVE the pickled beet suggestion!! You guys are awesome! I started back at episode 1 and am working my way through all of the episodes now!!
Lovely listening to you ladies, puts a smile on my face. Love Ken's story! With the swatching, I have found just measuring the stitch count in 4'' is not accurate for me. I had a big phase of not trusting swatches until I saw Suzanne Bryans tutorial.. So now I knit a swatch twice the size, at least 8-9 " wide and the length becomes what ever if I need to try different needle sizes. So I measure how many stitches per inch over 7-8 inches. The result is different to just counting within the 4" space. This has truely change everything, and is far more accurate for sizing for me.
I’m with you on the Wizard of Oz, Jennifer! 😩 So enjoy your podcast. Love your projects. You inspired me to try Jennifer Beale and I’m knitting Gander right now with Terra Nova waiting in my queue.
With all the craziness going on in the world today, it was wonderful to have a good belly laugh...... unfortunately at Ken’s expense but still very funny 😄
Ken...I wish I lived in your province...as a hairdresser I feel the pain of what happened and would drive over just to help out. I have had to 'fix' this and crazy bang trims for many folks over the years. Keep in mind hair grows on average 1/2"/mth. Hopefully yours has average growth. Wishing you some speedy hair growth from Ont. ;) NancyKnot
Hello I'd call the Garfield Grizzly yarn in the magenta color "humming bird nectar". Love the Podcast. If you bring back more Iona bunny can you do yellow/green, light olive.. I love green and dislike any shade of blue.. I love the yarn, I had purchased in the sock yarn in red and a yellow/ orange an it's great yarn.. I however don't knit socks, lol... Thanks again for sharing parts of your lives with us viewers 😁😊😉
Ah, poor Ken! He'll survive. I love your colours and thought for that magenta colour, you could name it Wild Rose. I searched pink flowers on PEI and up came the MacPhail nursery catalogue! It had the wild rose listed. I have my knit night ticket, so excited!
Oh Ken! A friend of mine joined me at a restaurant for a special dinner wearing his suit jacket, tie, etc,. It wasn't until I got up to go to the loo that I saw the back of his head! OMG he had the same issue, but his started at his neckline in the back and went up over 2 inches. I cracked up as he thought of himself as a pretty natty dresser. There was no way for him to disguise it...Cheers from Fern in Minnesota
Jennifer - I am so glad you don't like Wizard of Oz, because I thought I was the only one that thought it was frightening. I am also an introvert so maybe that has something to do with that similarity. Love your podcast. I have to learn all there is about swatching too.
Super great podcast. I wish PEI wasn't all the way at the other side of the continent (I'm in California USA) because the Festival sounds fantastic. I have a question about Jennifer Steingass' designs. The teacher in a colorwork class at Stitches West told us that these sweaters are notoriously narrow in the upper arms, which I suspect is confirmed by the schematic. Even if I make the upper arm large enough to fit me well, would that spoil the colorwork? How would this pattern look on someone with large circumference upper arm. I am a 46.5 " bust but have a larger than expected arm for that size chest. I guess I could ask this in the Ravelry group.
I am just about to split for the sleeves, so I will be able to give more informed information in a couple of days. I have sort of the opposite problem: broad shoulders, but relatively thin arms. I have just worked out how to adjust the pattern to make the upper arms smaller. Based on what you just said, that may not be necessary??? In any case, I will do my adjustment and see what happens. I will report back! Kim
I think that gauge in a cotton yarn is even trickier than a wool yarn, cotton tends to stretch so much. I read about swatching the cotton yarn, soaking and blocking, letting it dry, measuring for gauge then hanging it for a couple of days with clothespins attached to the bottom for weight, taking measurements again and using these final measurements as your gauge swatch. I want to make a cotton or cotton-blend sweater for summer, would love to know if there are stitch patterns that work better with cotton, seed stitch or garter stitch over st stitch in terms of achieving a more stable fabric. Rowan has lots of patterns that use 100% cotton yarns but should you be thinking about the stretch factor when knitting anything up in 100% cotton? I made a poncho once out of pima cotton and it stretched over time so this has always bothered me. Is it better to use something like Rown's creative Linen which is 50% cotton and 50% linen if you want a more stable garment? Wondering what your thoughts are on this.
Love the new tutorials! Just goes to show you that we can all learn something new, even if we’ve been knitting for a long time. And I don’t like The Wizard of Oz movie either so. You’re not alone. 😁
Great episode and hilarious hair story! First good belly laugh I've had in a week! Question about Kim's Hinterland, which is looking gorgeous- but am I missing something? The pattern is in fingering weight and you are knitting in Worsted- is there another version of the pattern or maybe you are making adjustments? Thanks ladies- Happy knitting!
I am making adjustments to compensate for the different yarn. In this case, I went down a size due to the difference in my gauge. But there will more to come on that in the next episode.
Have to love those ingenious new mistakes but the sweater is really beautiful but does seem to have a curse on it. I think you should gift it to Kim so she can match Ken. Now that would be cute, laughing. Okay, I've done two things while listening...bought my Knit Night tickets (2) and posted my finished Coco Knits sweater. I'm looking forward to all your tutorials. I've just started a swatch for another Coco Knits. It would be amazing if I can do it for the KAL as well. I can't believe you don't know the Wizard of Oz reference, but I do understand the scariness. Do you know what warp speed is?

I went to the pool one day and didn’t realize I was followed home by two girls. My sister answered the door, much to my dismay when I saw who they were. The bigger girl could have snapped me in two with a dirty look. They asked me if they could borrow my bikini as the smaller one wanted to impress a boy. I had a hard time finding my voice but made up several reasons why they couldn’t and sadly I never wore that suit to the pool ever again, I kept imagining how I was gonna get home without my suit on, as I figured they would jump me in the bathroom.
I have never been particularly fond of the Wizard of Oz either. I always worry about ToTo. It took several tries to get me to the Flying monkeys (It used to always be on tv for Christmas, and family wanted to watch.)
I knit a sweater dble held fuzzy yarn bottom up for my son. cut off the whole yoke cuz i couldnt frog it. then the pattern wasnt usable cuz it originally had bat sleeves so i had to find out how to make smaller thinner sleeves. then I had to pray how do I dec for this made up yoke dk weight . ? i prayed and the God Lord Jesus helped me I just knew to either dec on body and not sleeve then every 2nd row or every 4 th row to every row . I had to decide between those dec . Well it turned out beautifully !! He was impressed . It was really hard . I ripped up the saranac pattern into little tiny pcs and threw them out . lol PRAISE JESUS
Take him to your hair dresser and have her make the back and sides same length. then just has to trim the top for next few weeks while it grows back but it will look like a military cut for a bit.

Evening it out soon is a good idea!
