At least The people and companies behind the demolition took responsibility for their actions and even went out of their way to fix the damage And clean the surrounding areas that they caused. This could have been a lot worse but at least they apologized and they fixed the mess they made that shows great Character right there. Wish the entire companies in our country who mistakes and cause people to lose their lives do the same thing.

To all the people here who are assuming some ill intent on the demolition company: sometimes Things just go wrong. In this case, the stack was supposed to crumple as it fell. It didn’t act as expected and fell over like a bowling pin, causing the air inside to get forced out the end at high velocity. The company didn’t try to avoid responsibility, they began restoration work immediately.

Fred Dibnah also felled chimneys in the traditional Victorian way. He would have a wedge shaped section of brickwork removed from the base of the chimney, replacing the bricks with stout wooden props as he went. He then had other burnable rubbish placed around the base. He would then set fire to all this, and the chimney would draw the fire and make it burn hotter. In time, the props would burn away, and the chimney would come crashing down.

The dust they power wash off buildings will still be all over the ground and people will be walking in it. Probably doesn't smell so great, either. It doesn't address the dust that will be on the trees, in people's cars, clothes, etc. That demolition was not done with anticipation of what could happen, and because they were smokestacks and not just buildings, perhaps it could have been done in pieces from the top somehow. Towers like that are tapered and designed to be strong against lateral forces, as in wind loads or falling, and have design parameters to keep them from collapsing under their own weight. There is no way you could blast a tower like that and have it "collapse in" as there is no space within the structure for the debris to collapse into.. One benefit of a one time implosion is there is only 1 cleanup. In more traditional building demolition, a lot more dust is created over a much longer time period. It can last weeks or even months. Removal of dust created by implosion started 15 minutes after the blast. Sometimes things go wrong. Whenever a 500 foot tall structure is bought down, much planning and safety concerns are addressed up front. Even then, no one expected the air pressure inside chimney to cause so much chaos.

Unfortunately most of the dust - and it is really nasty dust - is a combination of buildup inside the chimney and concrete dust created as it is crushed against the ground. In other words, the dust was a solid mass right up until it wasn't. The only way to get really good dust control is to do the demolition in a absolute downpour, and demolitions like this need a precise schedule with weeks of lead time.

Contrary to what the activists said, the old stack was physically isolated from the plant and sealed. There was a small drain valve at the bottom of the stack liner (a steel enclosure that ran the length of the stack) and when I opened it nothing came out after 14 years. The stack had a welded steel cap, visible on satellite view.
This created a huge, empty Pringles can. When it fell over the "can" collapsed and the resulting pressure wave blew the cap off the end, resulting in the damage.
The new stack at Cheswick and the stack at Elrama didn't do that because the top was open.

Once Dust such as this enters the lungs, it's not that there's a simple way to remove it. The Alveoli is where Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide are Exchanged during Respiration. "The alveoli are just one cell in thickness, allowing the gas exchange of respiration to occur rapidly." So, Dust is rather hazardous in itself, and more so if the Dust has properties to it that may be carcinogenic or otherwise Toxic. I don't know if Residents were exposed because the Demolition did not go as planned, but people that were exposed should be entitled to Health Monitoring for a specific period of time to be sure they weren't negatively impacted. And the settled dust, once disturbed again, will again be a health issue.
Dust, disturbed by this event, was potentially flammable in such concentrations (a Sugar Processing Plant in the U.S. experienced a huge explosion from ignited Sugar Dust, killing multiple employees). The results may have been especially horrific if the Dust Cloud was possible to ignite.
The Company is Accepting Responsibilities, that's reassuring, but saying they are accepting responsibilities, and actually accepting responsibilities, are two different things, the work needing done involves Repairing or Replacing Damaged or Destroyed Electronic Items, Cleaning, Repairing Windows, Decontaminating homes who's windows were broken, Decontaminating homes that had windows open because they were not notified of the need to close the windows since the Demolition did not go as planned, Decontaminating Vehicles, and actually I would think, providing Free Health Screening and Care for people harmed by exposure to the Dust. Domestic Animals in the affected area should likewise be provided Screening and Care.

The giant stack still fell within the coal yard, no one was hurt and they showed up in 15 minutes to pressure wash the exterior of homes, streets, vehicles. Then they learned a lot more went wrong than originally predicted. You don't show up in 15 minutes to pressure wash on a whim, it was built in as a precaution. I'll bet they immediately notified the utilities and were just as professional after the implosion as they were before. So negative, are you people able to see the good? They weren't prepared for an air pressure surge of 750' falling over, it was probably going to collapse the bottom 1/3 like the other one. Modern explosives aren't easy to set off accidentally, so I don't think that's much of a problem

Next few years. That dust doesn't go away. It just keeps blowing around and around. To make things worse they want to implode the Boilerhouse and cover the respirable silica with a layer of heavy metals, (lead) and all the asbestos they can't get to.

See how the smaller one came down? It dropped a bit and then toppled. The big one was supposed to do the same, but it failed to drop before toppling. That makes a huge difference in A) how much of an air blast comes out of the stack when it hits the ground, and B) how close to the edge of the property the top of the stack end up landing.

my question would be, why they acted so differently... did some of the explosives' not go off?
it should be more than the base exploding to make a tower topple inwards....
