    I really do love the whole visualization of Hell for this series. Rather than the overused fire and orange and red, it's all those basalt pillars and falling ash in darkness giving it this cold, desolate and oppressive silence sort of feeling, rather reminiscent of the 'House of Dust' from Mesopotamian myths. Just that stark contrast from the usual portrayals in media really make it stand out, not to mention the concept of the individual hellscapes themselves.

      I love everything about their concept of hell. It's very Dantean: your punishment is based on your sins, and the colors are all cool colors just as Dante's Inferno is literally frozen in the center. And in Dante's Inferno, Lucifer is trapped there like all the other damned souls, and the rules are made by God, just like in this version. In fact, I think this version improves upon Dante's, by taking the idea of punishment fitting the crime and expanding it to *all* ways you could hurt someone instead of just Dante's 9 prescribed sins.

    What I find really interesting is that when I first saw this episode, I knew there was something going on, right from the very first scene... I just couldn't figure out what it could be, so I let it go and just dove into the episode. But the thing that made me suspicious in the first place was the nurse in Reese's hospital room when he wakes up in the opening scene. She didn't seem to have much compassion for him, telling him that he almost died (or whatever it was she told him). She just said it like it was no big deal and like it wouldn't scare him, the patient. And I thought that was weird, but I thought, okay maybe that actress is just downplaying her role or something, lol. And then I got to the end of the episode, and I was like, oh my gosh, she's probably some demon working in hell who has to keep playing that nurse role to torture him every time he goes back through the same cycle. She's probably bored, lol! And I thought that was just brilliant.
    I love this episode. I think the flashbacks are interesting and funny (going back to when they first started working together, Dan mourning his missing pudding, etc.), I love seeing the Chloe/Lucifer dynamic through Reese's eyes, I love the twist at the end, and I think the actor playing Reese did such a great job. He made it riveting to watch him spiral through the whole mess, and in the end, I really did feel bad for him when he lay there, taking his last breaths, still wanting to be with Linda, and Lucifer is there at his end, knowing what's to come for him. It's all so fascinating and sad and unique. Definitely one of my favorite season 3 episodes, for sure.

    Tiny spoiler alert maybe for people who wonder how the time works in this show;
    Season 1-this point is 13 months I believe. Ending of season 3 is almost 2 years. Season 4 is like a year because of a certain someone😏. Season 5 is after a 2 month break and takes like a couple of months. So in total the show has been taking around 3 years sins episode 1.

    @TheKat12364 3 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    He was just a regular dude who went a little of kilter and ended up doing some bad things. He obsessed and tried to kill someone and did end up killing someone. I think his torture is his own doing. Ever time Maze talks about torturing someone I get the sense they were really really bad, like a serial killer or Hitler, just a sociopathy or psychopath who dont fell guilt and so must be externally punished.

    • @IceMetalPunk
      @IceMetalPunk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Well... no. If you combine what Maze says about her hell torture in season 3, episode 16 with the depictions of hell in season 5a, it's clear that the way it works is the *cause* of your torture is determined by your own guilt and memories, but the demons play the characters in your loop and are free to change up the details of the loop for their own enjoyment, as long as the main driver of the loop stays the same.

    • @samatar6852
      @samatar6852 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@IceMetalPunk then what about the psychopaths who don't feel remorse for their actions?

    • @IceMetalPunk
      @IceMetalPunk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@samatar6852 That's a common misconception. Psychopaths aren't incapable of feeling remorse/empathy, it's just not automatic for them. In other words, for most of us, if someone gets hurt we feel their pain automatically to some degree. For psychopaths, they don't, but they *can* if they consciously try to. The difference between a psychopath and a non-psychopath is the psychopath's empathy is under their own conscious control, not that it doesn't exist at all.
      And so the way I see it, upon death, that option is turned off. They don't get to choose, they HAVE to turn their empathy on and consider their life's actions with it, and if they feel remorse after that, it's what drives their hell loop.

    I do love the idea that for people like Getty or the doctor who poisoned Decker last season who think they are in the right in spite of the horrible things that they’ve done, that they relive the the sins they have committed on others for eternity. And that it is driven purely by their own guilt.
    What I don’t like is that means that people who don’t feel guilty about said things or sociopaths or even purely evil people won’t go go hell because they don’t feel guilty, they might even love it. I wish the show runners went into more specificity about that. But I do love that the show’s overall theme is accountability, that it isn’t the devil that makes us do bad things, it’s us.

If you are a straight up criminal and you find out Hell and the devil are real, it means you are screwed. Also, when Chloe saw him in the first episode, she had been shot and was losing blood. It’s easy to play off what you saw in that moment.

    What I find super interesting about this episode is that we can clearly see one of the doors is chained shut and the occupant is trying to get out. Is this an implication that there’s a limit to how horrible your sin can be before hell just up and keeps you locked up? filler doesnt mean it has to be bad.

      Filler just means it isn't a part of the overarching story. Tales of Ba Sing Se is considered one of the best episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and it's a filler episode

    This episode is amazing for people to understand how Hell works. you're trapped for eternity in a guilt loop. there are no actual torture "bad place" style.

      @@elizanneribeirodasilva928 ehh the whole dinnerware story line is really not that great imo and to me it clearly feels like they wanted more attention to “the other guy” and the love triangle bs which is why the show in first instance got cancelled

  • @nerisvisentini1439

    This episode was part of season 2. Having taken it from season 2 (together with other 3) to cut it short and put in season 3 as a filler doesn't make sense for the chronological line.
