    I think this video help me put my finger on why I love your videos:
    You're not content with presenting "The Lore"or where monsters come from, you present how the creatures live, their attitudes and cultures, if any. This thorough examination of a monster, possible habitats, feeding habits, preferences makes it extremely easy to figure out how you want to drop said creature into your setting. Your videos are closer to wild-life documentaries than lore videos.
    Big thanks, AJ, my players and I have had lots of fun due in no small part to the inspiration I get from your videos.

    No matter how many times I've read _all_ the books. You still always find something new and interesting to point out, that I didn't notice before. As always you lay the anatomy of these fearsome beasts and monsters bare. I applaud you Sir! I really appreciate the way you highlight the monsters environment and any social behaviors. Of course along with showing every Dm, young and old a quick how to guide on fully utilizing your Monsters full potential
    A really great way to truly flush out monsters for encounters. Your channel is one of the best fantasy role-playing Dungeons & Dragons video channels out there. Thanks again! :-)

    Awesome video as always, but I can't help but prefer the Volo's Guide Darklings. I like the premise that they were a tragic race. They felt unique as I imagined a people that cherished beauty and wished to see the light but never could. That they dreamed of the surface they could never see, instead living viciously in the Underdark.
    But I suppose we can play them however we like. Maybe two tribes with different ideals from both the older lore and Volo's would be an interesting story.
    Again, great work on the lore video!

    Pathfinder's take on dark folk is pretty intresting. They are described as descendants of ancient human civilisations (clockpunk magitek Atlantis-inspired Azlant, in default setting Golarion's case) who have turned to owbs, mysterious and malevolent entities from Plane of Shadow, for protection. Upon birth of a child, owbs decide its future fate in society, which besides original dark creepers and dark stalkers include dark slayers (life-driniking assassins who implode into nothingness upon death), dark callers (priests of owbs who explode with shadowy energy), dark dancers (bardic jesters and intermediaries) and dark empaths (emotion-controlling psionicists who cause confusion at death). On top of all that, some dark folk are born throwbacks to their ancient forebears - called caligni, they are despised by owbs and looked upon as glimers of hope by less evil dark folk. And they are a character race, of course.

  • @Dachimotsu

    My theory is that Darklings and Dark Ones are different species, and both exist.
    Dark Ones are of the Shadowfell. Darklings are of the Feywild.
    Dark Ones speak their own language. Darklings speak Elvish and Sylvan.
    Dark Ones hate the light and love darkness. Darklings love beauty and risk their lives to see it.
    Dark Ones cause blindness when they die using darkness. Darklings cause it using light.
    Thematically opposed, but both bound to the dark. Hence why they look the same.

      The fey creature type always Beene strange one and I see this as a strong possibility.

      Fey, outside the game, more or less just refers to magical or spiritual beings. Although the word fey does refer to a specific regions creatures. But anyway goblins, kobolds(which are just a different regions take on goblins), trolls, multiple types of undead, and more, are fey. So feel free to make them such in your games.

  • @nathanielchance9751

    The ending was especially entertaining, I'm wondering how many players would be comfortable with a one-shot that involves humans or other player characters without darkvision in the underdark where the only light source for the players is a small lantern or collection of candles to see their dice and sheets. Creating an atmosphere of suspense and dread, you'd be just as fearful having your character cross an empty room as you'd be when the DM mentions that the hairs on your characters' necks are all standing up on end as a poisoned knife slips between their ribs.

      worse. They don't plot, they don't story, they don't attempt trade or persuasion. They're thieves on a wargaming set; just pieces on a board with absolutely no value beyond that. They show up, they attack you for literally the dumbest unexplained reasons, and they disappear afterwards in classic "WTF" fashion. They're fodder for a rest-abusing party at best.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, I explained the reasons.

    • @GuardianCitadel
      @GuardianCitadel 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, but from a player's perspective, they show up out of nowhere and try to mug them without any clear provocation. If they pass any kind of knowledge check, the DM now has to explain the following Darkling flow chart:
      Do you have a Light source (y/n)
      Y: They want to murder you. (Players fight for their lives)
      N: They want to rob you. (Players purge everything in a 100 yard radius with fire and choking gas to ensure no man, woman, or child is left alive. Identify the item the DM tried to steal and ensure the DM can't make a cheap 2nd attempt)
      The ethics, language barriers, and cultural structures (specifically, the lack thereof) just barely cover the gaminess of their role as a random encounter. It's an entire 2-part race of "Scarf guy" with no speaking lines at best, or discount dark-elves at worst without major DM revisions.
      Either way, great video :)

    Lel, the Ork or half ork @0:50 is holding his parrying dagger wrong, he is supposed to have the cup part of his guard(I forget the exact terminology applied to this style of guard, but let's go with "swept cup hilt".), facing the outside part of his hand. (It's more than likely many of you won't care for such trivia, but if you ever get the chance to hold one, you will know how uncomfortable that grip is, and how easily it can be forced from your hand. Then there is how easy it would be to attack your opponent's fingers and knuckles with a cut, since the guard isn't helping to protect them.) *End/Walloftext.exe*

      On subject, the Darkling's don't sound all that bad, perhaps even a working relationship might not be too difficult to set up. ( Could one not set up a deal with them, where they serve as assailants for someone, in exchange for resources and such? Maybe even keep outsiders away from their territory, as a additional component?)

    This is one of two classes I'd like to play as. I always try to work them into a narrative but because of their outlook on life it's very difficult. I thought about giving one a ring of darkness so they are continuously shrouded and can still use their blindsense. Or perhaps giving them Snow Goggles (Pg. 25 Arms & Equipment) to counteract their light sensitivity? But I think just being above ground is what they don't like. I know there are dark gem glasses in another book, but I can't recall.

    • @thedarkmaster4747
      @thedarkmaster4747 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't really see to much for them being a swashbuckling adventure going P.C. based on what they believe, in a religious sense, but an apostate darkling would definitely be a fun character to roleplay as or encounter as help on a surface adventure. the whole: "we try to bring the darkness, meekly." thing they have going on makes them hard to fit in with the steriotypical good or evil dungeon delving party. maybe you could have them ware a blind fold in the day & take it off at night/when it gets dark, akin to riddicks eye shine.

They are a tough nut to crack no doubt about it! My drow suggested polymorphing into one of them and Peach refused as in his mind he considered it wrong to decieve them. When I gave a PC human (multigenerational slave) dark vision of 30ft, I said he can see the bioluminescence that all living creatures have
    (real human eyes are just not sensitive enough to see it...but miners trapped underground for a prolonged time swear they could kind of see their hand. Some people claim that it is more of a situational awareness and superimposing your imagination over where your hand should be...)
    Thanks for the show. I love darklings

    I know that there are many individuals within both courts; however, I don't know if by making a new one, I would be crossing over others. I have been thinking of recreating them based on more folklore stories and always show an almost cautionary side to their stories to represent the way that others tell it.

    This is wonderfully "illuminating" this is a great piece of lore, and you've cleared up a disernment cannon issue aswell, so now. not only do i have a blinding fungus throwing race race of religous zealots to put into the world i'm putting together, but a moral polarity to so many of the religions that exist. What would i do without your anthology? not just theives, but faithfull but silent. ❤'ed this. I like the grey outlined version of darkvision instead of infrared, because you can see much more with heat vision(though walls, inside people.) akin to the dragons(wyverns) in the reign of fire universe, in certain ways, heat vision(with high resolution) is superiour to how we see. nightvision, has limitations, there are limits to how well even a cat can see in the dark, but darkvision doesn't have that limit, but you shouldn't be seeing blood vesels & creatures hidding in things, that are behind things, underthings & technically invisible... *homing plasma bolt discharges* darklings would definitely try to bolt the sun, sever the connection to the gods, but they are not evil & have no manifesto... just some psionic drow that has been warning everyone about the doom of the "coward people", who isn't listened to, untill ofcourse it's too late. and said psionic drow saves everyone, at great extortion of others & benifit to themselves. Although it is true that you can't see in the absence of light, you can also be blinded by it...

    there is zero chance they could use spell books as those use sight to record spells, posibly if it was engraved in clay, metal, of stone tablets but all standard spell books are sight based and this monster disdains all sight.

    Thanks for the awesome vid A.J. sorry I didn't watch or comment on your planeswalker vid, but I don't support MTG in my D&D games.

      That's OK man. But there will a few more vids like that one as I am learning about the MtG lore.

    I knew early dnd and games workshops ties and their falling out lead to warhammer...but I never knew the fiend folio( very great book) was from the white dwarf side

    OKAY. This is going to be a weird question/nitpick! I want more ways of using alchemy, stone workers equipment, brewers kit! And so on. I don’t want the boring. Okay roll a D20. Nice you made TWO healing potions! I want it to be you found an ancient root of a long forgotten golden apple tree. If you are able to bring it back to life you’ll get golden apples. Which are a main ingredient of a secret potion of nullified aging. Your character doesn’t age for 10 years!
    Or my stone working becomes infused with my magic so my small clay dolls can do simple actors!
    You understand I want something more

    It's a shame they're essentially one-sided random-encounter antagonists alongside hook horrors or or carrion crawlers. Players generally have only one option when it come to darklings, and that's an inevitable conflict. Whether they're ambushed, or fall afoul of taboos, players simply can't negotiate, trade, barter, deal, or even converse with them, which makes them more like mindless ambush monsters rather than bandits when it comes down to DM material. They don't plot, they don't story; They just attack or rob whoever's closest. Which is a shame, really, since there's a lot of potential material to work with here if they weren't 'hard coded' to be unmitigated assholes.

      Zourin There are plenty of creatures like that to be fair. Plus you can always just change that part of their character if you want them to be more interesting.

    They are the reason why we cast amunantor's eternal sun in the underdark. Hahaha. Let there be light. So now there in the caverns in the formerly underdark is now a second mini sun bathing the once dark in a endless noonday sun. Course we had to exterminate the ilithids but every vermin requires pest control after all. The children of gith were all too happy to help.

      It's now possible to be blinded by looking down. Haha. It was something quite interesting as the people. Above ground never realized for the most part. The apocalypse happening just beneath their feet. Giving zuggotmoy the secret of photosynthesis and binding her as the sun's guard. Breaking the drow host as underground rivers ran red. Stealing kirsansalee's divine spark. Having lolth confronted by her once husband. Truly an epic adventure.

      I’m now very interested in this spell, but google pulled nothing up sadly. Does it literally create a mini-sun? Because in that case I am very interested for my homebrew Light of Ra domain.

    Just like the cat or the dog they have low light I seen logical this theory a long time ago when I was like it was amazing like they they tapped into it I think the dogs eyes and all you see was just different types of light gray mid gray shapes to dark gray shapes to a very darker gray but this is in the dog's eyes color blind perspective and they follow the dog feel like I think Miles and Miles the study in and to see how he looks in the night time the light shifts a little bit always stays gray always while light gray only in daytime but night time it shifts a little to a mid dark gray always crazy crazy I was in high school at the time and was on NBC or CBS I was like say two decades ago I wish I had those eyes it's not as powerful or rich sharp shapes like your infrared or green it's all about color blind which was still amazing and I was in high school at the time
