When our bard dipped into warlock and chose an archfey patron, this entry immediately sprang to mind. Dubh Catha, the forgotten archfey, empowering a pact leaves a great door for including darklings in the game. Our team encountered them at higher levels, so they've had a few more abilities added from different rogue paths, most notably assassin. This makes them durable enough to be allies or threats at the 9-12 range.
I use these guys in my Pathfinder campaign. They had taken over a mine because their underground home had been invaded by evil forces. The PC's went in to clear out the mine but ended up making friends with the Dark Folk and clearing out their lair so the Dark Folk could move back in and leave the mine in peace. It was pretty cool. Now the PC's have new allies, which is good because their new settlement is about to be invaded by an evil empire. Think kinda like Revolutionary War.
I have a PC running a drow warlock in the game I am running that has made a pact with Dendar the Night Serpent and these and I use darklings as her messengers. They appear when the characters are in total darkness and whisper to the party Dendar's dark wishes. :) It is fun.
So a made a character that is a Deep Gnome/Darkling Deep Gnome mother and Darkling father, He's a Ranger. He has a Shadowcloak Elder as a Companion that he frequently wears to protect himself from light.
Lol your rogue sneaks into a compound only to almost get to his/her destination and have Darklings jump down and Sneak Attacked? Damn that would be ironic.
I love these npcs. I ran into one during my very last 3.5 game. we managed to capture him and started interrogating it for information. things weren't going our way and some one put a knife to his throat. He ended up slicing his own neck in defiance and exploding with everyone around him, lol.
I'm starting a new campaign, and a lot of the PCs reflected interest in being one form of thief or another. Darklings seem like the perfect rival guild for their low level encounters. I really like the lore and background of these guys, and will probably make them a somewhat prominent race. Volo's Guide is one of the best 5e books to come out since the core.
I am assisting with an adventure during which the party is climbing a mountain and are attacked by darklings who are trying to steal elemental magic items to conduct a dark ritual which will open up the feywild for free access so that they can return.
Would love to see this race as a player option. Possibly using a hybrid of the Drow/Eladrin template. Elven Traits *Ability Score Increase:* Your Dexterity score increases by 2. *Age:* PHB. *Alignment:* Chaotic Neutral *Size:* Medium *Speed:* 30ft *Darkvision:* 60ft *Keen Senses:* You have Proficiency in the Perception Skill. *Fey Ancestry:* Advantage on Saving Throws against being Charmed, and magic can't put your to sleep. *Trance:* PHB. *Languages:* Common & Elvish Elven Subrace: Darkling *Ability Score Increase:* Your Wisdom score increases by 1. *Peripheral Awareness:* You have Blindsight that has a radius of 30ft. *Sunlight Sensitivity:* PHB. *Darkling Magic:* Can cast Darkness once per Short/Long Rest. *Deathburn:* Volo's Guide
Using one of these guys as a medium-level npc friend of the party who tragically dies (you know how) later on, at the worst possible moment. Yeah, that's pretty darn evil, I know. :P
"Love of beauty" "Light a candle" Nope, nope, no! They LOVE darkness - and absolutely HATE light! They can’t stand light - Volo must have been drinking when writing the guide!
I like these guys but using them a way that takes advantage of their lore is complicated. Like most things in Volo's Guide, you can make a whole campaign centered around these guys.

What about incorporating their curse .... as transferable... to give another NPC their abilities... or even curse the NPC and let them find a cure....low level creature lol ...boom damn I'm cursed...

Love all the new content tho guys keep it up!
These are Dark Ones, Dark Slayers and that race. Very cool race though they seem to have been turned into Fey which is odd.
can't wait for my copy of this book to come in.
Please do one on Goblins as PCs from Volo's!!!
These are perfect into enemies for a criminal underworld campaign I am going to run soon.

Ive been curious about using the darkling as a player race if not an elder.
Isopherus Since they are dark fey I would probably reflavour drow or port the Pathfinder Fetchling race.
