For portability and speed in addition and subtraction of basic numbers the Soroban would have advantage, but for flexibility and advance representation of numbers and computations, Suanpan is the best. For example in Suanpan, you can mark the unit rod of a number by the extra earth bead, with the availability of 2 heaven beads per rod you can easily compute mixed number systems such as duodecimal or vigesimal along with the conventional decimal number system, you can easily represent scientific notation numbers, etc.

I enjoyed the video and have a lot to learn yet. The Abacus that you used it this video, I like that one and would like to get the same one, do you remember where you got that? Maybe a good place to get a good quality abacus?

      Here’s a good, inexpensive version: www.amazon.com/Yellow-Mountain-Imports-Vintage-Wooden/dp/B00SQW8EYS/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=1RMH8X0RWM82Q&keywords=abacus&qid=1672243571&sprefix=Abac%2Caps%2C168&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzUjFXWFRQTUs2NDJUJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNTg1MTM5MVFQM0NaODJMVkc1UCZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMTgxNjQxMjYwR1dGTDEwVFhOTyZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

Why is the second bead at the top necessary? Can you not regroup it to the left instead and avoid the that second bead at the top altogether?

Several historic reasons for the second bead. The bead-frame abacus evolved from the counting board, used in Ancient Greece, Rome and medieval Europe. With these, each number was entered onto columns of the board using its own counters or tokens, then the numbers were regrouped to complete the addition. So it was common, before the regrouping, to have numbers in each column exceed nine in value.
In ancient China, they employed a currency system based in part on Base 16, hence why, with five lower beads and two upper beads, values from 0-15 can be represented. When Japan borrowed the idea of the abacus from China, they dispensed with the second upper bead; then in the early 20th century they dispensed with the fifth lower bead, forming the modern soroban that we know today.
