  • Now that I got it to run again its time to figure out everything else that's wrong with it. Turns out there's quite a bit to do but that's pretty much what I expected.

It sounds like it has a couple dead holes in the engine, but that might just be leaks from the exhaust.

Had a 94, they don't call them SilveROTo's for nothing. Frame was so rusted, junked it before it broke in half.

The beauty of a 305 is you get every bit as crappy gas mileage as a 350, but no power. I currently have a 1994 k2500 "heavy half/6 lug" with the 305. Terrible mileage, no get up and go, sorry ass oil pressure when warm with a hint of rod knock. I will be dropping a 350 in it very soon.....😊

next time its running spray brake cleaner at the throttle body to intake manifold gasket these rot away causes a high idle lean condition. pull the distributor cap & clean (or replace) it. replace spark plugs i just did mine yesterday and still cant get the back right one out its tight been in there since 1996. good bet the transfer case & rear axle are bone dry on oil because by now the axle seals should be leaking all over the wheels. just to be road safe to everyone else replace all brake lines, this truck has both size brake line and all double flare ends its not hard to do not expensive just buy 1 roll of each size. what is expensive is the rotten fuel lines up in the frame rail, they're getting hard to find. cv axles are only $75 each with core exchange. brake rotors/calipers not that expensive and the brake calipers are also core exchange. these trucks have issues with the wire harness connections behind the gauge cluster radio and hvac control all getting corrosion in the terminals. the oem universal joints on the drive shafts have to be "melted" out with a soldering torch to get the needle bearings to come apart before you put it in the shop press. this truck r12 refrigerant needs to be converted to r134a, i had a local tractor mechanic do it for $90 because he needs r12 for farm equipment. this truck has the old school tv cable, throttle body to transmission this cable has a issue with "going out of adjustment on it's own" over time and this why the 700r4 transmission starves for fluid and gets fucked. basically the adjustment is..... with engine off, at full throttle push the square black ratcheting cable adjuster thing backwards towards the firewall as far as it goes. by doing this the tv cable will have full extension at full throttle. not 1 transmission mechanic on planet earth would tell me this secret of secrets of secrets!!! i had to learn it the hard way. the catalytic converter will be plugged just replace it with a universal one for $100 it's 2 1/2" on both ends and no o2 bung on there. the way i look at these trucks is your going to be fixing cars the rest of your life miles well learn to do it so when i'm 90 years old and blind it'll be easy

That's a nice project truck, especially since it only has 99K miles on it. That's a 400K truck so, it's worth fixing up imo. I would add plugs, cap, rotor & wires to the list and she's a daily driver! Just did the same process to my old Jeep Wrangler....daily drives perfect now !!!!

Friend had a 1978 Trans Am with the Factory Chevy engine. It was in storage for a couple of years. We pulled it in and got it running. It just would not go more than idle so he tried Reving it a few times and it went Ka-Boom! Bang. And it began to run nice.. Walking behind the car we found two huge mice nests with dead mice in them against the garage door.. Well we gassed and then Evicted them...

Think about changing the TBI injectors? I've heard changing old ones can help bring back performance and make it run much smoother. Never had a TBI truck, but they don't look to hard to change. Seems like you can get refurbished ones for about $40 each. There are two. That or convert to carburetor.

Before you, that poor truck had a rough life! But now it’s in the right hands, and I think that you are going to get a beautiful return on your investment! Once everything is fixed, I imagine this truck will last you a very, very long time. Did I see correctly that it only has 96,000 miles on it?

The knock sensor in those days would keep retarding the timing to the point the engine would almost quit if it “heard” any noise. It should be a one wire version screwed into the lower water jacket. This would explain why it ran quite a bit better with the fresh gas (less pinging). If the sensor was bad, or heard loose engine components (worn flat tappet camshaft, loose timing chain, etc) it would cause this problem. Just for fun, you could unplug it and take it for a shake- this would be proof of concept.

@@ryanfrederick4889 Yes, I agree that this could be a labor of love to this guy. However, with all that needs to be done to this vehicle, does he really need it???? Also, WHEN DOES THE FLOW OF MONEY STOP????!!!! I had a situation back in 2017 with a 1990 Toyota Cressida where it took 3 months and $600 just to replace a $23.00 coolant sensor for the ECU. Now, I nearly scrapped this vehicle due to the frustration it caused. Only ONE mechanic speculated it was a sensor, so, fortunately, I acted on it!!!!! Car runs great!!!
