    That was great info about economy seats, possibly being better with the Sapphire cards through the travel portal. I would not have thought about that. And I’ve been doing a ton of research lately on how best to transfer. I have status with American Airlines and I’m still learning how to use Avios points to book with that. Thanks man

    First off, I love the thumbnail. Great tips about the 2 ink preferred cards. I’ve definitely fallen victim of not taking advantage of transfer partners 😬….that was before I got into the credit card game. 40k points wasted on a measly 1c/point cash back redemption. I also didn’t know about transferring points between family members, but I’m single so i can get a pass on this 😅😅.
    Forget about activating categories? How about, forgetting the categories period 😂😂😂. Yup, I’m guilty!

    I recently got my Amex gold and platinum and I think I’ll be ok for a bit without chase, especially in light of their 5/24 rule.
    I remember their lovely overdraft fees in college 😅. I’m good for now.

    I think one of the most complex skills to learn in the credit card game is when to use each redemption method. For Chase points, whether or not to redeem for cash back, travel through the portal, or travel with transfer partners is a skill that is super important to learn to not miss out on all the free profit these cards will give you if you do the due diligence. Great points Ben!

    Only thing I've done is forget and use the wrong card on some minor purchase a couple times. Like using a 2% cash back card when my Freedom Flex or Discover are giving 5% there that quarter. But it's like, darn, I missed out on 60 cents from that $20 purchase. Not exactly a devastating mistake.

    Did my moral compass potentially screw me out of 70,000 UR points? I recently completed a version of the Chase trifecta - I have held an original Freedom for years, a CSR in 2021 and as of a few days ago the CFU. I considered applying for the CIU because they're running a deal for a higher SUB at lower min spend, but I wanted to use it for some home renovations that I couldn't in good conscience say was for business purposes, which is the first item on the T&Cs.

  • @michaelthompson1822

    I got my Sapphire preferred last year when the intro bonus was 100k points. I don't really use it much other than dining and for online grocery orders when I max the benefits of my Amex blue cash preferred. I'm curious how much of an effect of cancelling my Sapphire would have on my score since it would decrease my average credit age. It could be worth it if that offer comes around again, but I haven't seen it over 60 or 80k since then though

    • @TheCreditShifu
      @TheCreditShifu  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But what about redeeming points? And points that you earned on freedom cards and transferred over to Sapphire? CSR gets 1.5 cents per point in the travel portal, and has all the transfer partners

    • @michaelthompson1822
      @michaelthompson1822 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheCreditShifu I just redeemed for cash back since they nerfed the pay yourself back. The reserve annual fee is to spicy for me and my Amex gives way better rewards in general. I don't travel all that much anyway. I'll just build enough points for a vacation and that's pretty much it.

    • @mikegoodwin2386
      @mikegoodwin2386 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd keep the CSP for the redemtions, but if you really wan to get rid of the annual fee, after you've had it for a year, you can downgrade it to a Freedom Flex or Freedom Unlimited. Neither of those have annual fees.

    • @LK_EBM
      @LK_EBM ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What hit do you get to credit score? A few temporary points? Seems 100% worth it for $1k+ worth of free travel.
      If you don't want to lose the age of your account, just downgrade it to a free card.

    I just got back from
    CO where i booked flight through chase on united due to the 1.25x. But I never got credit for it, not sure how this is possible since you are booking through 3rd party

    • @TheCreditShifu
      @TheCreditShifu  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should be able to enter your United number at the time of booking, if you didn't do that, there should be a way to find the flight through your United account, you may be able to enter your booking reference and link it to your account still, usually if the flight was within 6 months. It varies by airline, I'm not an expert in how united works, I am more familiar with American Airlines and British Airways.

    • @TheCreditShifu
      @TheCreditShifu  ปีที่แล้ว

      You keep your credit history anyway, thats how FICO scores work, its only on vantage score that it doesn’t. I have tested, there is really hardly any impact to a FICO score. But when i say cancel, i guess i am assuming people understand cancel or downgrade. You could do that, you are right

    • @TheCreditShifu
      @TheCreditShifu  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well thats why you gotta check and then choose the one that makes most sense, but i would say more often economy on the portal works out cheaper than transferring points, especially if you have the CSR. But obviously if you really find it cheaper to transfer, then do that

    Best travel partner for trips to south America

  • @lurnt5763
    @lurnt5763 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    +1 to the transfer points part. EVERYWHERE I read told me to transfer, transfer, transfer my points. I couldn't actually see the value of my points on the partner (JetBlue) and thought it would be a better deal anyway, since at the time I was reading online JetBlue has a 1.5 cent per point conversion. I ended up paying more for the flight post-transfer and would have saved a handful of points if I just bought from the UR portal.
    Will probably only consider transferring for very expensive flights going international. For domestic the portal is honestly the best option.

  • @praspurgh
    @praspurgh ปีที่แล้ว

    1:37 it looks like the text means you can't have sapphire card within 48 months when you apply a new one, not what you were saying, 48 months after you enjoyed the first bonus.
    for example, I had hold sapphire card for 7 years, I decide to cancel it, wait for a couple months and reapply, I would be disqualified for the bonus according to the text, but what you were saying is I would be qualified.

    • @TheCreditShifu
      @TheCreditShifu  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, you would be eligible in that situation. Here are the terms of who cant get the bonus (i) current cardmembers of any Sapphire credit card, or (ii) previous cardmembers of any Sapphire credit card who received a new cardmember bonus within the last 48 months.
