  • A retrospective on the world's most common shape, and its place in the media of our lives.

    This is so well produced and researched I thought I was watching an 'established' creator. This is really good for how little recognition it's gotten so far.

    I just watched your Fallout show video and now this. Definitely subscribing, and very happy I found your work. It looks like you did a bunch of Bioshock videos I’m looking forward to watching too.

      Haha! Thanks. The BioShock content is dated so be ready for some quality issues lol. But it is one of my favorite series and it effectively launched the channel.

    Commenting to feed the algorithm. TH-cam has been recommending new videos from small channels to me pretty consistently the last year or so, which is great to see, but they are very frequently AI generated and not very engaging. Finally, a fresh video with some effort put in to it! It is maybe not as profound as it is trying to be in some places, but it is packed with good knowledge and insight, and by golly it's clearly crafted by human hands and voiced by human vocal cords.

    I wonder how dreams have changed throughout history. I’m assuming there’s a pretty strong link between visual data and dreams. And I wonder how they were produced in the first place during REM.

      Fascinating idea. When I was a kid I distinctly remember I watched all of my dreams from a sort of viewing chamber. It was a black steel box with tan gravel on the ground. One day inexplicably I became a participant in the dreams and not a viewer. Never understood why.

    why are the rectangular minerals obscure? seems like an arbitrary distinction made to imply human exceptionalism. and notice how you only show pictures of ancient stone buildings; preservation bias needs to be accounted for. those ancient people who drew only organic shapes might have lived in wooden structures full of right angles, and we would have no way of knowing. maybe they did have a concept of bad drawings, and we just can't distinguish them from the good ones with our contemporary lens. maybe only certain types or classes of people were allowed to draw in caves. innumerable possibilities abound because we know so little about them. i hope this comment isnt too aggro i love the video overall im just so stoned

    • @RivetingMaterial
      @RivetingMaterial  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Basing obscurity on overall rarity. Admittedly it is a bit vague, but I think its a safe assumption that anyone plopped on a primordial earth would be fairly hard pressed to find some bismuth crystals, even if they knew what they were looking for. I also agree that we know very little about the social classes and life styles of pre-neolithic humans. However, their drawings are distinctly unconfined and distinctly geometry-less compared to other art found in human history, but my explanation of why is reliant on assumptions as opposed to any distinct archeological fact (aside from the objects and drawings that did survive in the fossil record). That being said, not all the buildings are stone, there are some mud, clay and stucco structures. Modern isolated tribes and indigenous communities certainly use right angles in much less durable materials. We definitely started using right angles pretty much as soon as we started building and that undoubtedly includes temporary and improvised housing that time consumed a very long time ago.
      Also your comment doesn't seem agro at all! Thanks for watching the video and engaging with it! I appreciate ya big time!
