A hard watch but a very accurate portrayal of British poverty. Every actor in this is outstanding.

Very much like my American experience with my sister and older men as young as when she was 12. I’m disturbed by this film and who is directing this and who wrote this, but this is very true to form across the pond and back unfortunately. This is simply pedophilia. i’m at odds because the acting is stupendous

So I watched this many times trying to pick up on different aspects and this is seriously a very deep film. First off, Connor is def a predator even though its hard for the audience to see that bc he is shown as charming and good looking. He actually grooms Mia and starts to groom Tyler as you can see in subtle ways (tickling, telling Tyler she can go the bathroom when he's there etc). Second, Connor knows that the audition that Mia is planning on attending is for exotic dancing but doesn't let on simply because he is there to use and dissapear. He's looking for sensation in his life which is bland and boring. The emotions of this family are just a game to him. Thirdly, Mia isn't meant to be an excellent dancer. That's part of the social realism of this film. She doesn't have access to other dancers to dance with or much training or even private empty areas to dance. She is limited and therefore her dancing is. This is a fact that is meant to demonstrate how working class people seek escape thru various methods (dance for Mia) but rarely do they come to much because of the limitations imposed by poverty itself. Overall this film is about how the pervading structures of inequality that divide Mia and Connors lives create an environment that encourages one group (Connor) exploiting another (Mia). And how this cycle continues

Bother the director and actor have said Conor’s action’s weren’t premeditated! His character defo has predatory aspects, but think the intention was he genuinely didn’t plan to groom/have sex with Mia. I agree the ambiguities are left there deliberately though

This movie makes it really hard on the women in the audience. On the one hand, he's an obvious creep and her mother's boyfriend (that he would voluntarily be with that woman is almost all you need to know about him.)
On the other hand, it's Fassssssssbender.

God, this was grim, and just when you thought it couldn't get any more depressing, they had to shoot the horse. Kept my attention all the way through though, and the mother and daughters dancing together at the end was a bittersweet touch.

The movie was sooo sooo soo good. Its depressing. You feel everything. Acting was superb and really hate the character, thats how good this is.
I clenched when fassbender and the girl kiss, in my head i said, "Dont, she had daddy issue, you can be the cure" And i thought she was going to kill the kid, and i hate her for real. And when Fassbender found her and chased her, i think of it as me and my daughter and i killed her just for touching my kid. My emotions are running wild for this film. Superb.
I know i am 9 years late, but hey, i got a feeling this movie will haunt me for years to come. That im sure.

An excellent film. Fassbender and Katie Jarvis were great.
She just needed someone to tell her she was worth it and had a purpose in life and that stability and happiness would find her soon enough.
In short her life had no direction and she needed to be loved extremely sad film.

Lol you should check out BAFTA nominated stuff like I, Daniel Blake, Sorry We Missed You, Killed by my Debt, Care, etc. British are good at portraying depression because of financial problems.

Okay, I've never seen this movie before. This is what I think from the trailer.
She loves to dance. She falls for her horrible moms boyfriend. The boyfriend rejected her causing her to go on a who cares Ramage. The boyfriend tries to help her. She ignored him. She eventually comes into terms with herself. She dances her way to happiness. How close did I get to the plot? Lol

amazing movie. this trailer makes me laugh though. the beginning and end of it are great, but the inspirational music in the middle over title cards like "life came rushing in" are so corny and not at all a true reflection of the film's tone.
