Yup, very last sentence of the Bonus Actions section on pg 189 of the PHB - "anything that deprives you of your ability to take actions also prevents you from taking a bonus action."
"Upcasting counterspell doesn't provide any additional benefit" except if Thanos was going to counterspell the counterspell, he'd then have to cast it at 7th level, or roll a 17 on an intelligence check! So there would have been a benefit to casting it at 7th level!

I do feel making Thanos a Monster with the build in mind would have resulted in possibly a better challenge. Legendary Actions, extra resistances and the like. Counterspell couldn't have been cast regardless as they weren't within 60 feet of each other, but had they been in range, it would have been completely legal.
Before watching: Oooooh... this is gonna be *good...* Hope the Avengers can pull a win, or Thanos curb-stomps them... After watching: ... Yeah... I was expecting a boss fight, and it certainly started out that way, but I guess it was more of a 1 vs. 8 PvP match. And... I guess this is why true endgame bosses have minions, legendary actions and legendary resistances, and possibly lair actions. I actually feel bad for Thanos. He didn't stand a chance. RIP Dr. Strange, you will be remembered.
Personally I see this video as the ultimate example of the inherent weaknesses of 5e. Any other system and this sort of setup would have been a near-guaranteed wipe for the players.
i think it is actually a good lesson. this videos show, why bosses have this stuff. also, i think without black panther coming in, this battle would hae looked really different, bc those stunning strikes sucked.

Nice idea, but not really though Lady Death isn't Undead, and even more, she despises those who tries to escape her grasp. So, Thanos is not an Undead Warlock. His magic isn't chaotic, and if he is Sorcerer, it's more like Divine Soul, I think, since his grandfather in comic books is Kronos of the Eternals. And I am not sure about the rest, especially about Spores Druid, since I do not recall him having anything thematically appropriate.

Hear, hear. 9 levels of Tempest Cleric, plus either 11 levels of Eldritch Knight (be sure to take Booming Blade) or 7 levels of Eldritch Knight and 4 levels of Storm Herald Barbarian. This will make him more than beefy enough to throw down with Hulk and Thanos, while still giving him plenty of good lightning/thunder potential while also giving him a bunch of other magic you’d expect from a mystical demigod.
1:09:25 The trigger for the counterspell reaction is "when you see a creature within 60 feet of you casting a spell" not after the spell is cast, you fail your save and you determine you don't like the result.
Odd, nobody seems to have called out that first counter spell Thanos used was at the end of the same round he cast shield as a reaction. I know you said it was pre-recorded, but that allowed quite a bit of damage that should not have occurred.
Can't wait 14 year until we get KH fight between Master Xehanort level 40 ( Heartless Xehanort level 20 and Nobody Xehanort level 20) against keyblade wielders. A great finale to series that got off the ground after Sora build.
22:25 This is the end of the first round and Thanos rolled last on initiative and Thanos’s first turn. He’s already used his reaction, he used it during Doctor Strange’s first turn to cast Shield.
@@colonel__corn No its right there in the second sentence of the description : You endow yourself with endurance and martial prowess fueled by magic. Until the spell ends, you can't cast spells, and you gain the following benefits:

1:39:18 He has 7 ki points remaining but no bonus action with which to do a martial arts attack, as he used cunning action to dash to get in range to begin with. Also, he could have applied sneak attack to either of the claw attacks since he has had advantage on all his attacks due to faerie fire.
You should do more build fights from your channel. these are great, just please use roll 20 so we can see more things on screen. Like I mentioned earlier.
I always treat a monk's unarmed attacks as finesse weapons in my games. I hate arbitrary restrictions based on nothing but a lack of explicit phrasing.
I'm curious how Tulok handled Proficiency with the extra levels on Thanos. When I loosely statted 'over levels', I included them as an alongside to normal levels (With forced multiclassing) when I was musing about making more, power fantasy shenanigans potentials for characters, and bonus 'forced multiclass levels' just, didn't affect the characters 'character level' for things like, proficiency, and scaling up Cantrips.
If you restructure any other characters, I would suggest a change to Thor. Make him 11 levels of Eldritch Knight and 9 levels of Tempest Cleric. Perhaps exchange 3 levels of EK for Storm Herald Barbarian. The Storm Sorcerer is waaaay too squishy and fragile. This build will make him more than beefy enough to throw hands with Hulk and Thanos, while still giving him almost any lightning/thunder spell that’s actually good. He’s basically a sort of Paladin - a hybrid of fighter and cleric. Importantly for his EK cantrips, choose booming blade, lightning lure, and shocking grasp. If you allow him just a few magical items, let him have a Belt of Storm Giant Strength, a Wand of Lightning Bolts, and a Broom of Flying (the latter two reskinned and combined into a warhammer).
Addressing Cap’s mobility: I’m playing a Cap character in the 5e Tomb Of Horrors update - “Sir Stefan” (Oath of Glory Paladin 10 / Battlemaster Fighter 3) and have increased mobility + 10 feet from the class, as well as Haste on his spell list. Of course taking the Mobile feat would also increase his mobility, as well.
This was a blast to watch but I'm curious how it would work if you helped Thanos out in the action economy by splitting his two level 20 characters into 2 initiatives - a level 20 Fighter and Level 20 Wizard. You could either keep the HP as one big pool or keep the two halves as separate characters (maybe the Wizard one is just the Gauntlet). That way it plays sort of like he's a Legendary monster or something. That said, I love that this gave a high-level monk a chance to really shine since a lot of folks dunk on monks.

Yeah. Anderson Cooper is at least level 60
Again, the series isn't finished. Have you been watching it lately? There are SO MANY crazy twists lately
Ban na you made a typo, you only put one zero
1:41:55 Effects that prevent you from using actions also prevent bonus actions unless otherwise stated.
Before watching: Oooooh... this is gonna be *good...* Hope the Avengers can pull a win, or Thanos curb-stomps them...
After watching:
It woulda been cool if there were some legendary actions. I know this was supposed to be more of a pvp type encounter but I think it would make Thanos feel more intimidating and more players woulda died imo
@@matthewburton6360 Completely agree. No matter how overpowered a character is in DnD, if they're alone and don't have legendary actions against a top-level team... they're dead.
Player's Handbook PG. 189 "anything that deprives you of your ability to take actions
also prevents you from taking a bonus action." meaning Thanos can't cast misty step while stunned
Give Thanos 20 levels in all spellcasting classes.
Undead warlock.
War Mage Wizard.
Wild Magic Sorcerer.
Creation Bard.
Grave Cleric.
Spores Druid.
Conquest Paladin.
Horizon Walker Ranger.
Thanos.
Nice idea, but not really though
Lady Death isn't Undead, and even more, she despises those who tries to escape her grasp.
Sinister Twister I absolutely agree with what you say, but I was thinking Wild Magic so that it could be as if the stones were starting to act on their own and with Spores Druid i was thinking about all the dust that was created during the snap (in the movies at least)
@@sinistertwister686 maybe instead of the undying, THE new UA Undead Warlock
@@marcobuiatti9802 this patron is also undead creature - and Lady Death is unlikely to be one. She looks like a skeleton, yes, but actually she is more like a space deity
@@sinistertwister686 yeah, I know, so maybe the Great Odl One
I really enjoyed this and it was a cool way to see the builds is great I would be totally down for seeing more of these.
Also, just a minor rule thing i wanted to point out: counterspell has a range of 60 feet. so spells cast from a higher range can not be counterspelled. expect when you are a sorcerer with distant spell metamagic
Great job everyone!! This was so much fun to watch! You're all fantastic! Thank you!!
It is funny that Thanos is on the run (with his infinity gauntlet) With Black Panther and Hulk always catching up to him almost as quick as he gets there
(As I am typing that sentience to a friend):
Thanos: I am ... Inevitable!
Groot: I am ...GGGRRROOOTTT!
Before Thanos could snap his fingers thorns grabbed and pulled him underground with blood exploding out of it.
I then type to the same friend :
Groot just killed Thanos XD
(Also I imagine Thanos Knocking back Dr. Strange into something knocking him out and with him spinning his double bladed sword decapitates Dr. Strange before Capt. America, Hulk or Groot could even move. Much to thier Horror.
I really hope that he has the chance to make more videos like these, I'd be so cool to see him buff his Pamela Isley build and toss in some dc hero's.
TIL: Matthew Mercer invented D&D in 2014
Are there any links to the updated cap and doctor strange builds? Or for that matter all the avengers, I’d love to run this for my friends.
56:57 "That is 37 points of damage"
Me, immediately: In a row?
Cap: I understood that reference
Saw the map: *mined goes * hey this loo~ *DING ends up shouting it out in my house* "its Bomb-om Battlefield from Mario 64"
I find it slightly bizzare that I just subscribed to La'Ron last night after watching his excellent Scream video, and here he is on my favourite DnD TH-camr's channel. Gotta love those coincidences...
Oh yeah and I guess since I mentioned Scream... Gail Weathers build when?
Loved it. Next do Thor, Loki, Hulk, and Valkyrie vs Hela, Fenrir, And Surtur.
39:17 You can't cast magic while using tenser's transformation.
You Should do this again but with lvl 40 Dr. doom vs the fantastic four
This was so fun, I’d love to see other iconic battle mashups between heroes and villains Tulio has made, it was great
Please do a rebuild of Thor. I feel like you would make a better one now that your more experienced and I would have loved to see him in this game.
I like how Mel has the green lighting to reflect that she's hulk.
I just think it's neat
Or it's a coincidence, i dunno
@@Zaalpe not a coincidence! thank you for noticing!
No it wasn't, he had a turn, which reset his reaction.
Not to mention the fact that they are well out of counterspell range so the whole thing is immaterial.
Yo since they were on bobomb battlefield, imagine if Mario just showed up outta nowhere and killed thanos with the power of monk druids
Can't wait 14 year until we get KH fight between Master Xehanort level 40 ( Heartless Xehanort level 20 and Nobody Xehanort level 20) against keyblade wielders. A great finale to series that got off the ground after Sora build.
any chance then of remake videos of your remakes of Cap and Doctor Strange?
Why did you give them back up characters? you were already fighting 4 level 20s.
22:25 This is the end of the first round and Thanos rolled last on initiative and Thanos’s first turn. He’s already used his reaction, he used it during Doctor Strange’s first turn to cast Shield.
You can't cast spells while Tenser's Transformation is up. Martial arts affect monk weapons(including daggers) as well.
yes you can, you just can't cast any concentration spells
@@colonel__corn No its right there in the second sentence of the description : You endow yourself with endurance and martial prowess fueled by magic. Until the spell ends, you can't cast spells, and you gain the following benefits:
@@dariensampson7913 oh okay then nevermind. To be fair though, still got some other stuff wrong that worked against thanos
You should use roll 20, then they can move thier own tokens, measure things pop up thier attacks, see thier dice rolls and hp on thier tokens. It's alot better as a veiwer and even better for the players.
this was a ton of fun. so much fun. Would love to see other oneshots like this.
I also love the idea of expressing the Gauntlet with all 6 Infinity Stones as a Level 20 Wizard. Very smart and creative.
1:39:18 He has 7 ki points remaining but no bonus action with which to do a martial arts attack, as he used cunning action to dash to get in range to begin with. Also, he could have applied sneak attack to either of the claw attacks since he has had advantage on all his attacks due to faerie fire.
We need the revised Cap and Doc Strange builds!!
Revised? What changed?
Mister_7 watch the video
Holy shit. I worked with you at a news station about a decade ago. Just stumbled upon this video and see youre doing well! Hope the success continues.
KDLT gang rise up! Message me on Patreon (I'll refund the dollar) and we can catch up
You should do more build fights from your channel. these are great, just please use roll 20 so we can see more things on screen. Like I mentioned earlier.
Quite an interesting group of Avengers against the Mad Titan, but I love the video. I personally still am down for a Predator build my guy.
2:01:52 Maybe the real Groot was the friends we made along the way.
As a kid who also grew up in SD I did also break sticks on stuff
Justice League vs Darkseid would be really cool to see or Teen Titans vs My Hero Academic that’s would be awesome
I was NOT expecting to see mel stone here
I always treat a monk's unarmed attacks as finesse weapons in my games.
I hate arbitrary restrictions based on nothing but a lack of explicit phrasing.
I'd love to see more videos like this in the future when you round out the cast on a few more shows
@1:38 shouldn't he of had disadvantage on his con saves for stunning strikes because of what cap did on her last turn?
I'm curious how Tulok handled Proficiency with the extra levels on Thanos. When I loosely statted 'over levels', I included them as an alongside to normal levels (With forced multiclassing) when I was musing about making more, power fantasy shenanigans potentials for characters, and bonus 'forced multiclass levels' just, didn't affect the characters 'character level' for things like, proficiency, and scaling up Cantrips.
The optimal (and frankly canonical) play would've been the wish spell turn one to dust em all, but then there'd be no video.
You should do a hawkeye build. I'm thinking magical archery fighter, and maybe artificer for better magical damadge
I think he already has.
Something tells me there's going to be a 'remastered' version of the Captain America build coming sometime in the future.
Fun Fact about Thanos' voice: He literally was voiced by the voice of Pete once. And he sounded exactly like Pete.
The voice of Pete? You mean Seth MacFarlane?
This was a blast to watch but I'm curious how it would work if you helped Thanos out in the action economy by splitting his two level 20 characters into 2 initiatives - a level 20 Fighter and Level 20 Wizard. You could either keep the HP as one big pool or keep the two halves as separate characters (maybe the Wizard one is just the Gauntlet). That way it plays sort of like he's a Legendary monster or something.
That said, I love that this gave a high-level monk a chance to really shine since a lot of folks dunk on monks.
You guys play in photoshop!? I've never thought of that that's so cool.
I have not regretted joining your patreon yet, and I doubt that I ever will
I'm calling it now, the guy on the bottom right has an amazing voice
