Virtual Bart (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A complete playthrough of Acclaim's 1994 Super Nintendo platform game, Virtual Bart.
Man I hate this game. I played it far too much as a kid to not endure it one more time for posterity's sake, and not because I enjoyed it. Because I hated it with an utter passion. It stands out distinctly in my mind as one of the most vindictive, spiteful, sadistic games I've had the "joy" to play. The only reason I played it enough as a kid to beat it was to give it the middle finger and show it that it couldn't beat me. Looking back, it really wasn't worth it. Damn adolescent ego.
Sculptured Software developed this "gem", alongside others like Mortal Kombat, Super Star Wars, and Jack Nicklaus Golf. Without being the slightest bit snide at Jack, I would rather play Jack Nicklaus Golf for a 24 hour nonstop tournament than play this again. I really like that game, actually. Not this one. Not Virtual Bart. (...at least it's not broken in the way Action 52 is. Or the NES Wayne's World.)

Who the fuck tought it was a good idea to design all Simpsons games from that era to be incredibly frustrating, awful and hard? Starting from Bart vs the Space Mutants all the games were like that.
Good question. But I know dang sure that the rental stores made millions off us on the weekends. Cant count how much Blockbuster made from us on those Simpson games.
I guess it’s to hide the fact that there’s less than an hour of content in this game.
I loved bart vs the space mutants 😂
And the most confusing thing is that they had a VERY excellent Simpsons game. The Arcade game. Yet I never saw it ported back then except on I think MS-DOS? Looking it up, it was also on C64.
@@Supperdude9yeah. It's one of the most tragic things in gaming history in my opinion. Which is that Konami unfortunately only had the rights to make arcade games & computer games for The Simpsons. Sucks so bad, man. What could have been..
This was the nightmare game of my childhood. I remember renting it a couple of times from Blockbuster to try and beat it, but there were some levels I could just never beat.
I rented this game over and over couldn't beat it
@@scrubclub9999 Same here. We rented it from Blockbuster at least 5 or 6 times, and I think we only ever beat 2 of the stages completely (the "tomato" stage was one of them).
@@GuardsmanBass i think i might of beat the school yard and water slide
Imagine if this was made by Konami it would have been leagues better at least before konami became crappy
Man, that wretched pig level is a war crime. I just hate everything about it.
As a kid, I'd always just reset the game or just suicide in it if that level got selected, and it always seemed to come up the most often.
I played this a lot as a kid. I swear, the game punished you just for wanting to play it. I think the developers were like, "Bart's Nightmare was too easy. Let's pull out all the stops and go for straight for controller-throwing rage."
Dude, you are not kidding. I had this game when I was 8 or 9 years old and I could barely beat the water park and tomato toss. This game was tough for SURE!
games were supposed to be hard in the 90s
LMFAOOOO this is too on point, this game was insane hard
@@Mitzi-chan224 I don't disagree, but the levels of randomness for the stage picking at the start, paired with semi poor controls and lousy hitboxes made this game **rough**.
Barts nightmare was way harder.
This game sure loves to put you in spots where you can’t even avoid getting hit
You just described all Simpson games for the nes and snes
The tomato-throwing one was my favorite
Mines also
Instablaster...
Same
Tomato.and baby stage for sure
Waterside for me!!
1.1:04 Dinosaurs
2.10:22 Pig
3.20:54 Water Slide
4.24:11 Motorcycle
5.26:23 Baby
6.32:25 Tomato and Egg
Thanks
Man this is giving me severe ptsd.
It's like Battletoads with its level difficulty, variety, and quality of presentation. However, in developing VB, someone decided to leave out the 'fun', 'interest', 'excitement', and other such apparently inconsequential things. Boo.
Are you saying 'Boo' or 'Boo-urns'?
I don't know ... there is an attraction .. and quality to it ..
@@stevec4702 It boo-urns like herpes. You know, I've heard. From people.
I have one question: Why did you paused some times on Splashmore level?
@@elbarry7016 he's looking at the arrows on the fish meter on top which tell him which way to go.
You did a fantastic job, sir. This is a damn challenging game, and much of that is due to bad design rather than actual challenge. This is one of those games where I'd never fault anyone for using save states. Sucks this game didn't turn out all that well because it's actually pretty comical (the dino stage is hilarious) and isn't terrible with the source material.
Also, for the record, I've played this game a ton in my youth as well. I've NEVER seen that much of the dino level lol. It's like playing Joe and Mac, except that game is well designed and incredibly fun :).
Thanks! For me the worst stage by far was the one of the 4-wheelers. It was so touchy and demanding. I guessed that just makes it like the rest of the game though :/
37:23 coming never: Virtual Homer
I played the hell out of this game.
One of the best Simpsons game because it didn't completely suck.
I'd say it was damn near playable and even entertaining.
Also, IDK anyone else who could play it besides myself.
Yhea the sega version its better then the snes but meh its fine the snes version and good soundtrack thanks for the sony audiochip
For me as a child this was the the most difficult game for me. Hope I didn't just suck.
XenobakaLP No, this game was basically waterboarding in a cartridge.
Im really bad at this and i’m 20
Same, I never could beat it as a kid. It was like one of the most difficult games I ever played then.
This game was also shit
Same I thought I sucked at video games
4:09 Pre-Historic Maggie is one bad ass baby. Takes 6 tail whippings from a Bart-Rex to take her out.
Only levels I could ever beat were Tomato, Splashmore, motorcycle and if I was lucky the dinosaur. Baby and Pig were relentless platformers.
Man, I wanted to like this game **so much** but crappy controls, frustrating hitboxes, and just plain unfair RNG in the water slide made this intolerable. Screw the baby and pig levels especially!
This game was hellishly hard because of the whole "Rent vs Buy" thing with rental stores, right?
Watching that makes me wonder how the heck the designers thought people were going to beat it.
Yeah, it took entirely too much effort without a payoff that actually made it feel worthwhile :/
Thing is, they wanted to make sure that you won't forget these games that easily, so they made them really hard just so you can keep thinking about them.
I suffered to finish this game, the pig and baby stages was the worst parts for me. I finished when I was 15/16 years old.
The tomato stage songs are unforgettable, I like them very much. And slide stage has a very good Surf Music.
Thief and Bart’s Nightmare were obscenely difficult, lol how the hell was a kid supposed to know what to do?!
The slaughterhouse stage was kinda dark
its amazing how much work went into the background music in that dinosaur bart stage in the beginning
With endings like that, some games were just not worth beating.
I remember this game - I got it for Christmas one year. Some levels were alot of fun, the tomato/egg one and baby Bart, others I hated (the pig one).
A real trip down memory lane here and you did so well to complete it, I remember just how hard it was and I couldn't finish any of the stages except the Mount Splashmore one.
That was the one level I could not beat as a kid
26:02 A reference to the first Treehouse of Horror Couch Gag...
No wonder I couldn’t beat the pig one, it was 14 days long!! Kid me couldn’t fathom!
at 21:00 Matt Groening cameo!
Pig Bart has the funniest music ever
As a kid who rented the game but could never beat it, it was awesome to see you destroy this game.
Also, am I the only one who thinks visually, it's pretty impressive? Or am I just weird?
I could never pass the dinosaur or pig level...this was close to one of the hardest games to play without any aid....
I agree, it looks great. Too bad its gameplay is anything but.
I played this profusely as a kid and I could never beat any of the it even though I could get to the last part of every game, sure as hell enjoyed getting as far as I could, it's still an awesome game
0:55 was so scary when i was a little kid
Too bad in the tomato/egg level, you didn't hit Skinner when he bent down. I heard you can get a good amount of points for that. : )
NewYorkS4U From what it seems, it's game over if you hit adults, you need to to hit all the kids.
John Smirnov no you can get skinner when he bends over
Why does Alex pause the game whenever there's a man that's balding in the Waterslide level?
As he said, in order to know which slide direction to take
Does anyone know the name of the melody/song played during the "Baby Bart" segment around 26:30?
The mister softee jingle. There is no lyrics.
@@Hamiltonodnt Thank you kindly! And here I was thinking there might be some other name for the title. Classic nostalgic stuff right there.
One of most difficult games I played when I was child I couldn’t be any of the levels I thought I really sucked at video games but see you beat this I applauded you for this
I'm so sorry you had to play through this. I'm so sorry the people who made the excellent Super NES version of Mortal Kombat II had to MAKE this. I'm not sorry at all Acclaim went out of business...
Acclaim didn't make any games though, just licensed games from smaller developers to release on consoles at the time.
Aklaim bought and owned LJN "Laughing Joking Numbnuts"
That means Virtual Bart is a shitty game that sucks ass!!!
2:50 caveman Barny cracks me up every time
I never passed a single level on this game as a kid; kinda makes me want to try again and see if I sucked or it's just plain hard.
+TheStrayHotdog I promise it won't be any easier now than it was back then. It's evil.
Sometimes you suck, and it's hard.
@@NintendoComplete It's only EVIL if you forget to switch the cartridge to GOOD. It's an honest mistake.
Boy, that music is...really something. I especially like those behind the beat snare (?) rolls in the pig level, and the out of tune violins in the Baby-Bart level. 😂
9:53 This Could Be A Virtual Homer Game Over Cutscene
Just remembering this game is a torture. Just watching Dino Bart and Baby Bart stressed the hell out of me. I feel stomachache! Thanks nonetheless, never got past almost no level (only in the Tomato one and the Water Park)
I got stuck on the pig, dinosaur and baby part as a kid
The SNES had some really advanced sound quality that the Genesis didn't have.
But it didn't have BLAST processing!
True, but the Genesis could pull off some of the most amazing sounds and music that the SNES couldn’t touch.
Eh, this game is a pretty bad example to show that. The Mega Drive version used GEMS and still had some preferable tunes and better speech samples used in the game
Even though this was devilishly difficult, the SNES version is better in terms of graphics.
Back when Bart was the coolest member and super hero of the Simpsons by far...
Jurassic Bart, Mad Bart: Fury Road, how much more parodies i could make?
Gold and Tails Bart, pig in the city
It's one of _those_ games. Trial and error gameplay that doesn't care about wasting anyone's time.
I could never beat this as a kid
Why did they make the health pickup sound so loud and hard to listen to?
If you consider how frustrating 90s game-design was, it is indeed an interesting fact, that the videogame Industry hasn´t vanished in that dacade.
As much as I enjoy this game, I am sad that after years later I notice the arrows that appear in the meter briefly, such as at 21:08 If only I noticed those or the man with the green shorts, I would have finally completed the slide stage. The tomato throwing and Bart as a baby were the only two I could complete on my own as a child, I should try to play and see if I can win the game finally.
Is there any significance for the guy in green on the water slide
@@KRobinson-ko1neYes, look at his swimsuit, he has arrows on it, telling you where to turn
These Simpsons games were insanely hard. A lot of these levels I never beat.
Fun fact: this was one of the first video games I ever played.
My grandpa had a SNES back in the early 2010s with the games being this, Tetris and Dr. Mario, Super Mario World and Daffy Duck the Marvin missions.
I barley knew how to play this game (or any other game) so I watched my grandpa and older cousin play.
This Pig level was one that was kinda memorable for me besides the water slide and baby bart level
Your grandpa had a SNES? That's sound so odd to me. 😂
The pig slaughter house level is pretty crazy to have in a kids game. There's clown with mallets trying to bash your head in. Exactly what they really do there.
Whoever decided to put stunlocks in platformers is an a hole. Thankfully that’s not in this game.
This game was harder than Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts.
20:30 For he’s a jolly good pig boy
for he’s a jolly good pig boy
for he’s a jolly good pig boy
that nobody can deny.
This game seems to be just a bunch of unused minigames for Bart's Nightmare
Whenever anyone shits on Bart Vs. The Space Mutants or Bart Vs. The World, I'll remind them that Virtual Bart exists.
+Channeleven That's an excellent way to respond. I like that :)
I Never Realized That The Guy In Green Had The Arrows On His Shirt To Tell U Where To Go
+ASHTREFISHER Yeah that level gets much easier once you figure that out!
The Little Blinky up top does, too, but that’s harder to focus on
@@NintendoComplete Yea I Ended Up Beating
It
@@Smeginator IKR Lol
I was wondering why the game was paused
This, along with Battlemaniacs have to be the hardest SNES games out there.

I grew up raging over Bart's nightmare and Bart vs the space mutants. I never saw this game until today and honestly it looks dreadful.
26:02 That's the most purely Simpsonic moment in the entire game.
Simpsonic, huh? ;)
Barts Nightmare was a lot better, both in gameplay and graphics...
This game contains severe levels of bullshit, it was one the banes of my childhood. Good to see someone absolutely destroy it. Getting to see all the parts I couldn't even get to, I have to wonder how I ever would have beat this as a kid...
Why did you pause the game during the toboggan level? Just curious about it.
You ever think that whoever developed the slide game one day came across the concept of "Hitboxes" and was mind blown?
That pig level was insane. Such a hard game!
Why did you pause with every character in the green on the waterslide stage?
That's exactly what I was thinking, other than "why am I looking at longplays of terrible 16-bit Simpsons games"
If you look carefully, the guy with the green swimsuit has arrows on his clothes. They tell you which way to go at the next junction. The SNES version of the game also has the tracker up top with the colours telling you which way to go but that requires superhuman reaction times to use, the Genesis/Mega Drive version only had the swimmer dude.
I Trevelyan I I think it's Willie.
No, this version also has the marker on the progress bar, take a look,.
I always guessed. I never seen the swim suit. Also, I always thought that was the lady teacher.
i wish this was a actul simpsons episode
Just sold this game today for £60.. All the pain this game caused me 20 years ago has finally paid off some
When You Get To The Waterslide Game, The Game Keeps Pausing After A Few Seconds, Why?
Doesn't the word Virtual Bart kinda sounds like homer?
Well...at least "Simpsons Hit & Run" was a decent Simpsons game. Too bad it took until the 6th generation of consoles to get one...
WHY DlD YOU PRESS PAUSE WHENEVER BURNS SHOWED UP?
Weird, I've been following you around a bit on TH-cam, and you've played some shit games, and never really ranted on it. Until...
So that was the payoff at the end. 🙄
24:09-26:09 Really? All that for a lousy couch gag? 🙄😅
I wanna find a cartridge of this game just to throw it at the wall. F this game
What a fucked up nightmare inducing excuse of a game.
But how did milhouse rig a vacuum to operate forever to run his perpetual motion machine
2024, like if u still hate the pig game
There all fun and a irritating lol tho
"ay carumbah"
Bart simpson 1997 idk
The music and the tomato/egg level was the only things great about this game.
It's my personal opinion though. The game is too hard.
Oooooh, heeeeeeeelp!
Oooooh, heeeeeeeelp!
Oooooh, heeeeeeeelp!
D’oh
Said anyone that ever tried to play this game
This is the smoothest, fastest running SNES game I have ever seen.
It's crazy to see how far Dark Souls games have come without losing their original difficulty.
I knew it all along that Nancy Cartwright's name would be shown in the credits.
Why do you keep pausing at the water slide level?
I'd like to know that too
Ok even though I like this game, I have to admit, the levels overstayed their welcome. Like they dragged on and on and on for like 5 minutes.
Still waiting for virtual homer jejeje
Crepy game over😰😱
What a stupid ending, good thing I gave up when I was little 🤣 I was only good at the throwing stage and the pig stage
Man I forgot this game! Fun memories
The Simpsons: Virtual Bart (1994, Genesis and SNES):
The Acclaim text is a bit pinkish. Plus, the background of scrolling words of the game's title appears on the background. When that happens, Baby Bart, without his pacifier, drops down and into the "l" of the logo. He says "Aye Carumba!" after he drops in.
On the Genesis version, he is silent and the background is already there.
I was touched when the piggies hailed Bart as their hero. That was very sweet
Virtual! Bart snes 0:24
The Tomato/Egg throwing stages are the only part of the game I found fun. The whole game should have just been about Bart throwing shit at people
