Yes Sir ( sharif ) - I totally agreed with your wisdom too . Mr Peter Chan , Right on - you have really done a Pretty nice 👍 job for the betterment of us all . Bonsai is truly like Jazz it needs improvisation. Taste is a matter of choice but with Mr Peter ( You the Man ) - Quality is always a matter of Fact . Bonsai ( just like a lady ) they need to dress to impress.

You "improvised" a damaged maid into a beautiful & wise old crone of the forest . . . Beautiful improvisation!
This tree, now, looks more like it did at the Chelsea Flower Show . . . it's an award winning tree still. Even better if we can imagine how lovely it becomes when the gin work is completed. Am thinking it is more valuable now than ever before.
We love your talk; is not boring; is necessary to speak the improv. Thank you,! This is a wonderful show.

Lucelle Bernadette Pillay Hi Lucelle, I am a South African of Indian descent also but I left South Africa in 1964, moved to Zambia and then moved to Canada in 1970 where I have been since residing. It’s odd that even though I don’t speak an Indian language on a daily basis, I still retain the cadence of an Indian and so does Peter. You have a wonderful speaking voice Peter and you have the eloquence and articulate ness of the older generation. You do not speak in initials like idk etc. and it is so refreshing! I wonder what the English language will sound like in another fifty years! I’m glad you will be showing your winning Chelsea trees. I trolled the internet extensively trying to find them but to no avail. I was trying to book tickets to next years Chelsea Flower Show but had to give up in frustration as I guess the organization can’t predict the coved climate. Perhaps you know more and can point me in the right direction. I am determined to come to Herons as well. That cryptomeria turned out beautifully. I think you mentioned in a previous video that cryptomeria do not bud back easily. Am I right in my conclusion? Well, even if it doesn’t, this remains a stunning tree.

  • @TheAmorpheus

Hi Mr. Chan - thank you for your videos; your instruction, expressions, and invaluable wisdom in every regard of bonsai.
I have been deeply interested in the art for most of my 31 years of life, but have only just begun these past two weeks pouring into my thirst for bonsai knowledge. I have spent many hours with your videos and others' on while washing dishes, tidying my house, or working from home.
In my humble opinion, your vocalised thoughts and feelings during your videos are of immeasurable worth. We can all read about bonsai history and technique, but the way you are teaching enthusiasts of all experience levels through your speech during these demonstrations is, I think, the perfect way to learn.
Many other videos on TH-cam have a great deal of production put into them, and though the presenters are often very experienced, there is a quality about them lacking. The art is such a connected experience, and though I never doubt how passionate those individuals are about bonsai, it feels like a much more wholesome lesson to hear your unscripted thoughts about your process, experience, and techniques. This is what you can't read about.
So thank you - I would love to, someday for myself, be able to come anywhere near the passion you have for bonsai.
This all being said, the other day I found a couple of bonsai books for sale, which completely appealed to me and my love of books and learning, so I bought them. In a wonderfully serendipitous way, one of them was your "Create Your Own Bonsai With Everyday Garden Plants" from 1989 (the year I was born) in perfect condition.
This book is brilliant, and so perfectly encapsulates your fantastic approach to the art. I am a huge fan of how you describe approaching bonsai from a no-nonsense perspective, spending less money and connecting with the art through ways that many purists may feel are blasphemous. The examples of the neglected then transformed garden shop plants I think is the perfect guide to what the art could and should be about.
So again, thank you, from a brand new but life-long fan.

Thank you for your very eloquent assessment of my approach to bonsai. You have sussed it out perfectly which makes me feel that I have achieved what I set out to achieve - namely - to make bonsai accessible to ordinary people. No pretentiousness - nothing - that is how I like bonsai to be and Damn the purists who think otherwise !!

Very handsome. I love listening to you and sometimes I have you talking in the background while I work on my bonsai projects. Then I come back and replay. Love it. Thank you.

Every person has their own idea as how they would like their tree to look. That is why you have to respect their wishes. To those who are afraid of pruning and removing old limbs, your trimming to them is not boring, but, educational in every respect. Great tutorial.

Beautiful “Crytomeria Bonsai”, learned a whole bunch from Peter Chan, but today in particular with his “Ficus Indoor Bonsai”. I’m working with a group of different kinds of of “Elastica Rubber Trees” planted in group of contrasting colors. When Ficus Rubber Trees are happy, they really perform, thankyou Mr. Chan.

I really enjoy slowly learning the principles from just watching videos like these. Creating layers, creating spaces, etc. Now I'm trying to figure out what basics to follow for finding faults in the branches/pads.

Your voice is wonderful! It is very calming. The monologue that you have while you work don't just apply to bonsai. There are tidbits of life lessons in there as well. I find then very helpful in my daily life. Thank you!

Love the video Peter! Your speaking voice is what drew me to your videos several months ago. Now I've got a few bonsai in training and just built my first display bench. Thank you for inspiring me to begin this journey and for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us all!

Peter Chan. Your voice is melodious to my ear. You alone inspire me to work on my trees while listening and watching your videos. It almost feels like I'm getting a private lesson, or working side-by-side with an old friend. You are wonderful.

In regards to feedback which I love to give.
Mr Chan, most recently just having started my journey on choosing the bonsai which I want to home. I am based in the Uk and as such was very easy to find Herons Bonsai with a quick search, although I just found your channel on TH-cam first.
The channel has very rich content and lessons of your experience which is by far the most valuable you could ever offer us, lover of trees. Your passion comes through and your care is noticeable, very much. Your voice is actually soothing when I picture gardens of bonsai, as much as you think of it as boring. The pace at which you teach, resembles a lot the way you express your style and that is magical to watch. Your confidence and experience are visible and at first when I got into all this side of caring and nursing for bonsais, I saw some of your videos at first which seemed that Bonsais were being brutalised out of pots but actually, I always seemed to like the way you re-styled or saved them, such as the one in this video. It was reassuring to see that it is all part of the process with some fascinating examples such as the inclination of the trunks and angle adjustments to form new shapes.
By all means I am a beginner and always wanted to practice the art. That time has arrived and I can say very much you inspire that in people naturally.
In the future I can assure you that I will treat mine with more than respect than a car, and if I ever need maintenance, I surely know where to find it for my coming Bonsai.
Thank you for sharing your days of Bonsai with all of us, it is special.

Peter, I know this video is two years old so you may never read this, but it takes most people many years to reach the point where you are, the point where they feel comfortable cutting away at trees without thinking (and it probably took you some time to reach that level as well), especially when they are not their trees! This sort of relationship usually takes time to establish a level of comfort between the boss and the consultant. It feels like you have some of that trust now with Josh and some of your other students. You can trust them to pot, wire, prune, water, etc. So you don't have to do absolutely every little task yourself, right? 😉

How nice to hear the history of this tree. Im glad it has been restored to something like its glory days at Chelsea. I hope the owners appreciate your work and look after it as it deserves for many years to come. Great job Peter 👍
