Dont think its shit production quality for the time, it was probably quite innovative, but its progressed so much now that it seems ancient looking back at it.
@@quenzmo idk I don't know if the industry in general has progressed as much as joel has increased in mastering skill. definitely plenty of muddy or overly bland or overly compressed tracks coming out still. s'mores, anyone?
Even back then, this production wasn't technically groundbreaking. It's the music that made it stand out. "Faxing Berlin" sounds very melancholic whereas most similar tracks, especially at the time when trance was popular, would've been more uplifting.
yeah listen to him at the end - "when I listen to it now? it's so bad" he actually means that, he was good then but he's gotten much better at precisely manipulating all the details of a sound
What the fuck dude! This song took you off. Obviously the world loves this track to death. Melody-wise...everything-wise...this track is spectacularly amazing.
sarcasm and a bit of honesty. there is no perfect track, back in a day nobody would nitpick like he is doing here. expectations were very low so anything you put before was good
Yea but People are just People! They wanna drink and Party. From a Producer View, especially one like Deadmau5 i can imagine its getting annoying if People always talk about your old Stuff and how good it was, you don't wanna hear that. He always wants to get better and learn more
Well, I'm coming from techno background where melodies are most of the time non existant, "repeated sounds" and patterns are what's important. Can't imagine this track without those cowbells.
the cowbell has its place in this repetition, thats why it works, which is brilliant, as it is very difficult to make that work, that much repetition of a sound and sounding good..
I think most creatives dont look back at there earlier stuff in high regard since it reminds them of all the flaws they had looking back. Deadmau5 usually being quite a outspoken individual it's not surprising to hear him critique his own music even the stuff as us the consumer think its some of his best we've come nowhere near the journey he has come through. And the fact that he found a part of the track he still likes, I think he might be a bit more fond of the track than what he shows us :)
I came across this video right after i thought to myself "hmmm is this sidechain in the track i already published off or am i stupid" Humbled me real quick. Great track mr. Dj deadmau5
Haha this just goes to show how an artist is the worst judge of his music, everyone knows this is a classic track that gives such a great feeling, we love you Deadmau5, keep being you :D
I'm not that guy, but to me, it is the greatest track of all time. It's genuinely my favorite song, ever. I love that the song is so simple at first, but then the synth comes in and suddenly you're like...oh. Oh, this...this is beautiful. The sharpness of the club beat fades, and you feel yourself become washed away in the texture of that synth. It becomes hypnotic, entrancing, an eternal moment in paradise.
There is no difference in audio quality. He probably said that because FL Studio is so widely used among amateurs and as a result a lot of low quality material gets produced on it.
You guys realise he actually worked for Image-Line, the company that makes FL Studio (you can find his name in the credits section of FL). It was just a joke.
He’s being a bit silly but definitely kinda serious. Nothing harder to do for a creative than be proud of work you’ve outgrown. It still has its place on the fridge. And to me it’s one of my favorite ever
It's a phenomenal track. But I don't think he likes it as its not in his retrospective playlist. His taste in his own music isn't great. He missed out so many of his best stuff. His best stuff was from this era. He made so many remixes that were bangers like this too like cafe del mar
A real lesson to us all who make anything. What’s imperfect to you might be someone else’s perfect. I love this track. I love the muddy mines of the mid-lows and the cowbell. Put it out, bitches!!!!
I actually like the cowbell. His critiques are spot on otherwise. The mix is terrible and the mid lows are super muddy. Still an amazing song, but could use a tune-up. If only we had an extended period of time to do so...
Yeah, it might lack the clarity in the mid-low. But it’s still easily one of your best tracks, no matter how much you’ve become a ”professional”, yeah.
Okay, he has the best monitor speakers mankind can create, but I can't fathom how the mid-low range has a bad clarity. Maybe the intention was to be more ambient/mysterious? I don't know. But there's so much to know about production.
It's weird because I thought also that the mix on this track was shit. I always thought, 'man deadmau5 made a terrible job on this one' . Still listening to it tho
dylan Tallchief's take on it (when stalking deadmau5's twitch for every Ableton project screenshot ever or something in dylan's how to video) was that faxing Berlin was simple, but each element was quite good
This means he will be doing a remix/remaster/ VIP mix right? He likes the melody but not the mix? he already remixed Arguru, why not just one more track off that album? lol
I saw a video once where a guy took an ableton project and a flstudio project and did really similar stuff and compared the two different sounds and waveforms. He would do stuff like install the same vst's on both and play the same note or chords and see what differences there were. He also would put compressors through the same settings and stuff. With the exception of a few small things (I think the compressors used different algorithms so they sounded ever so slightly different) They were basically the same. I think the right answer is that Ableton is designed in such a way that it encourages better music production. I've never used it but I've seen people use it. I think the layout is really smart and I think FL studio puts you in this "Lets make a bunch of loops and string them together into a song" and Ableton is more like "no, no, we're here to make MUSIC, I don't know how youre gonna structure this but let's really dial in the settings" And the result is organization, very easy navigation and the ability to have all your settings just extremely accessible. I don't really understand why, it just seems easier to get a good result. But I don't think it's because of some magic "It sounds better" I actually think it doesn't give their developers enough credit.
Though it IS one of his masterpieces. Definitely a top 10 among hundreds he’s produced, one of the first I suggest to people who wanna get a feel for his style
I think all elements he criticized make the track perfect. "There is no clarity in the mid low" - builds some confusion to a instrumentally simple song. Even the quality, the cowbell, the lack of some stereo sounds, etc. they all contribute to a distinguished and unique atmosphere the track creates with its particular chord progression. And a curious thing, he named it Faxing Berlin randomly just to give it a name quickly and release, and to me it perfectly resembles some kind of german army in a devastated scenario trying to send a fax to Berlin about their defeat on the last days of the war. But no lol, all of this was my interpretention trying to give sense where the artist didn't. Interpretation makes art and music so interesting.
He said he likes the melody, but when I listened to it, I only heard chords and no melody. Also, apparently this is supposed to be progressive house but I don't really get what makes it progressive, except for the fact that it's 8 minutes long.
Is he stupid? this is maybe his best track. He slams on it and then goes and release so many boring even annoying singles. like.. kx5 is really dissapointing
the cowbell is the best thing of this track.
Absolutely my fav track of his production
We all could do with a little more cowbell in our lives
Deadmau5 breaking the heart of many fans hehehe.
yeah:)) my heart too, faxing berlin is the greatest song ever!

Yep
i love the little shaker effect. it adds way more depth than you’d think
Cowbell makes it unique.
Gotta have more cowbell. I have a fever, and the only prescription, is for more cowbell.

Hoping he’s just being extra humble here because this song is pure gold. Actually kinda hurts to hear him tear it apart. Oh well
He was being trolled, so he responds with trolling. Why so serious?
He's actually serious lol. The mix of this song isn't really good compare to what he's able to do nowadays

eh, I shit on my older stuff all the time, it's all part of the creative learning process.
The mixing is bad for a deadmau5 track
This song is what made me love him in the early 2000's
I really like that track, that entire album is amazing!
Greatest dance track ever made👏🏻

"And what's with that fucking cowbell?"
