    Great suggestions. The two most important words that you mentioned: Patience & Respect.
    They go a long way. I was able to buy a pair of DynAudio Contour 20s for $2950 new-in-box. Cash.
    The 20i had just come out, least popular color (but my favorite)..I asked for his best price “cash" out-the-door.
    The speaker retailed for $5300 + tax. He gave me a price $1000 less than I was expecting! 😁

    Firstly, when I buy HiFi gear, I try very much to buy from companies where I can actually speak to the owner/CEO/designer. I did this with Eric Alexander who was extremely helpful when I bought my Pendragons. We just chatted for close to an hr about HiFi and which speakers would be best for me. He didn’t even try to upsell me. I also spoke with Scott Reynolds at Tavish when I bought my phono stage, etc.
    I’ve bought many “open box” or demo models, and used gear, but I always went and checked it out first. That’s how I got my turntable. I’ve made many friends here online through the VC (vinyl community). We all give each other records and just keep the hobby going.
    Great vid. Thanks Jay!

    Did not know a promotional contest would ever happen in this youtube age of Hi Fi reviews with so much gear and stuff. It puts some of the fun back in the hobby. I have a lot of vintage gear that I bought decades ago and just moved with me after a 20 year residence at my old apartment. that stuff was vintage then, like my Harmmon/kardon 330c. I bought that in 1995 at a used/vintage hifi shop in my old Philly neighborhood. And my Polk floor speakers that I bought new in the 1980s. Can't wait to try out some stuff from the 21st century. thanks!

    Neighbors - talk to them. One gave ne a mint set of Quad 57 ESLs - I had to rebuild the electronics, but cosmetically mint and in the factory crate. Another neighbor gave me a McIntosh C 26 preamp and a 2100 power amp (it was toast, though) and a pair of Thiel CS3 speakers. Another lady neighbor gave me about three systems - nothing great, but she had six systems that her late husband had collected. I ended up selling her my ZU Dirty Weekend speakers and hooking her up with a PS Audio sprout amp and she loves that system . The gear is out there, you just have to find it.

    I live in LA area, not exactly Mayberry. One has to be careful about person to person sales. A friend who has been burgled has some precautions he takes. He never deals with emails or texts only. He talks to every potential buyer on the phone to vet them. He finds out what they know about the the gear they want to buy, audio in general, their system etc. Make sure it's just not a burglar trying to get his address. Once he green lights them and to make sure they are serious, he gives them an address a couple doors away from him and has them call when they arrive. Thats when he gives them the correct address. He also doesn't show people his system. He gives them the item in a box. They can examine it but he's not going to do a dealer demo for them. Paranoid? Don't judge until you have been ripped off. There are a lot of people on Craig's list who play games.

    Seems like most people with hifi shops are always passionate about what they're selling and almost always try to give a good deal, hifi shops definitely have some of the best customer-seller relationships purely from relatability

  • @martyjewell5683
    @martyjewell5683 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Most of my audio collection was purchased in the 1970's as a twenty-something. As I lived in NYC there were dozens of hifi stores/shops to pick from. In those days if you couldn't get a "bargain" you weren't trying very hard. Nobody sold MSRP. My first graphic equalizer was a demo model Sound Shaper Two (with the VU meters) from Stereo Warehouse in 1978. Got a swell price and this thing still functions. My first component hifi system was purchased after military service (and broke) in 1975. It consisted of a Pioneer SX-434, BIC-920 and KLH model 31's. Got it all for under $250. Nice interesting video.

    I started my path as a beginner audiophile when I bought. an used Ifi dac black label from a friend . It cost me $ 250 dollars less than a new one. It came with its original package and all the accessories. I haven’t had any problem with it.

    Another piece of advice is to be flexible: if you're planning to buy a DAC first, but have an opportunity to pickup the amp or speakers you want at a good price, you should probably take the deal and accept getting the components in a non-optimal order. My weakness is impatience.

  • @cameronkrause4712
    @cameronkrause4712 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You are right about most gear losing 50% of its value when it leaves the store. At least that's the way it was, unfortunately a lot of people don't agree and are trying to recoup up to 85% of what they paid in the store when they are selling on the used market. The tragedy is that every time some one gives them what they are asking it reinforces these high prices for used gear.

    Could you make a video on how to disrespectfully ask for discounts? like name calling, the best profanity to use, and maybe the best way to come off entitled? Maybe also talk about how to scam friends out of audio gear too that would all be very helpful.

    I have built a very nice system by buying and selling (sometimes after refurbishing) used equipment and slowly working my way up. It is a lot of work and the return vs the time spent isn't always great but if you enjoy doing it as a hobby anyway it can be worth it.

    I have bought my entire main system from ebay :) Fellow audiophiles will often look to sell gear when the time comes to try something new again, when that audiophile itch kicks in... And audiophiles typically take good care of their gear, so I have gotten all components looking and performing like brand new but for a fraction of the price. Definitely great tips Jay also when it comes to buying new and talking to dealers...

    My vintage Pioneer rack (with budget dac) will now rest after more than 30 years of service. I’ll soon buy a pair of towers (Wharfedale or Fyne audio) for about 500/580€ and an all analog integrated (Cambridge audio axa35 or Rega) for 350/550€. And keep the Pioneer cd player, the dac and the Apple tv box. Nice system for about a grand

    Patience is such a good virtue when looking for good used gear. But also research and the will to act quickly when a good opportunity does finally arrive. So when a refurbished Denon PMA-1060 amplifier showed up, I went to the seller the next day, tested it and it appeared to be a very good match to my Wharfedale Lintons. Of course it's no PMA-A110 but at just 1/10th of the price it does a damn good job.

I would not but most display models from a best buy or stores like that. In '93 I had a $10,000 system that cost me about $5500. Yeah , that was a long time ago.

    Great suggestions! Luck was one of my things. I purchased an Anthem MRX 740 but was given an MRX 1140. I tried to return it but due to being out of stock of the 740 they let me keep the 1140. The audio gods were looking out for me that time!

    Great stuff on not bargaining too hard. Remember most of these guys loved their purchase (condition shows it all), so it's a bit hard to pass. Need an audiophile network in Sri Lanka!

    I wish I'm a beginner audiophile. There's so much more to explore in the budget hifi world compared to when I started out. BTW, thanks a million for the giveaways.

    Used gear is my go-to, love hifishark! If you buy it 2nd hand at a good price there's usually zero write-off when you want to sell it again. I bought a Violectric V200 yesterday for €400 including some crazy power cable, no haggling it's just an early model from 2010 yet still works like a charm. Couple years ago I got a 2016 Audeze LCD2f for €750. It's almost impossible to sell both these for less than what I paid for.

    It's always great to hear how just a bit of resourcefulness, persistence, and a sprinkling of tenacity can yield the right results - in this case: a potentially great-sounding system for half the price. Looking forward to all the giveaways and accompanying videos.

    I think it's pretty dope you can check out what you got in your fridge straight from your Samsung device.

    Patience is key. However, you need to be willing to act fast because great deals don't last long!

    I'm looking forward to checking out the Galaxy smart tag for my boss cat, since he like to go out and come back late at night. This could make mejust sit back and enjoy the music with no worry about my boss.

    Samsung vaccum cleaner is on top of my list for sure. Have been after it for a while now. About the giveaway anything audio related would be so great that words can't express enough.
