She's being generous about the size of onion to leave around the root... She wants you to succeed. I've cut mine as small as 1" square (cause I forgot I was going to plant it) and it grew. I like starting mine in 1/8" of water so the root doesn't rot. I use a jar that has a domed bottom so the onion sits a little higher and the dome makes a little mote where the roots can reach out, leaving the stump high and dry. I've even forgotten and cut my root in half... It still grew. Experiment! You have nothing to loose as you were going to throw it away anyways. Good luck! 💖🌞🌵😷
Thanks Christa! I finally got my Harvest Right Freeze Dryer off the bucket list and tried the onions in the first batch. I dried 2 trays of onions along with a tray of bell peppers, a tray of chili beans, and a tray of apples. All tured out great, except, I shouldnt have processed the apples with the onions. Now I have onion flavored apples! 😀
😂 oh no. I was making chicken liver dog treats and thought the same thing, I had a tray of apples pre-frozen on a tray, but didn’t want liver apples 😆😂🧡 Lorie 😊
My favorite is my homemade onion powder made from all the wild green onions growing around all the yards here in Georgia. I dehydrate and powder. Mild onion taste and amazing satisfaction of knowing I made it from weeds! I do have a freeze dryer, but for onions I prefer dehydrating. Freeze drying onion really stinks up the freeze dryer. And for freeze drying you must be more careful to keep jar of powder vacuum sealed because freeze dried sucks moisture from the air much more quickly than dehydrated powders do,
I keep running out of onion powder. Now I won’t! I’ve been propagating my onions this fall and replanting the tops and I love watching them regrow. Some sprout two onions which I then pull up, separate and replant, giving them room to bulb up when the daylight hours get to the right time for them to bulb (hopefully). I replanted green onion tops from a store bought bunch and have harvested them several times and this spring they grew flowers and gave me seeds. I’m planting those seeds this fall and winter as well and they’re growing wonderfully! It’s like a perpetual harvest. My how wonderful it is that God created these plants for us! I’m also going to make garlic powder from my homegrown garlic as well. I don’t have space for a freeze dryer right now (we are building our house and living in our RV until it’s done) but I’m going to dehydrate my onions and garlic and use them right away because I use them just so quickly. I planted several hundred of onion and garlic because we use so much of both every year. Luckily we have lots of garden space. 😊P.S. Merry Christmas!🎁
Thank you for being such an inspiration! I never thought about replanting the bottom of the onion. Thanks again for the light you bring. Merry Christmas.
Don't know if the situation would be the same in your state, but in Vidalia, GA, sweet onion capital of the world..... I witnessed rats running rampant on the onions in a barn. Therefore I have washed my onions since lol! Hated to tell you this but thought you.may now consider washing... LOVE YOUR SHOW!
Oh my! Those are wonderful onions, but I will make sure to wash everything from the store in the future. This is another reason I like growing my own! :) Thank you for the comment, Rebecca!
Thank you very much for yet another informative and useful video on keeping my pantry stocked with high-quality food stuff. I recently found out about using the paper yellow onion skins in my chicken broth. It adds a wonderful onion taste and golden yellow color to the broth. Also, you can use purple onion paper skins in beef broth. It makes a beautiful redish brown color to the beef broth.
I have seen onion powder made on other videos, but I have never actually seen what to do with the end of an onion- ya learn somethin' new every day. Thanks for posting!
Just… love you and your videos. I hope you can make them more often, I always get so excited when you release them 😊 Blessings and Merry Christmas!! 🎄🎁
You can vacuum the jars with you freeze dryer, just pull the tray shelf out put a board in the chamber with your jars and use the vacuum test function to vacuum them 5 or 10 minutes, hit the done link/button and I let the vacuum out slowly just to make sure I don't get moisture in the jar if the flat is a little kinked and doesn't seal. Have you tried doing mangoes yet? If not just do one are a part of one because a guy from one of the mango farms down in Florida says that the cold or freezing kills the sweetness and I think the flavor too, I bought some frozen chunks to make Ice cream and they were no good, they were Great Value brand so I took the bag back to them and they gave my money back so freeze drying mangos might not give you something that tastes good. I have some sugarcane growing in 2 or 2.5 gallon buckets so hopefully I can make some Neutral alcohol with no alcohol flavor or smell so I can finally make some vanilla extract from the beans I bought last spring or the spring before. Big hugs for you Jesus loves you, I do too.
@prepsteaders I so appreciate and am thankful to you for putting the heat for drying in both °C as well as °F. God bless you and yours from South Africa.
My air fryer has a dehydrate setting. I have dehydrated many items, not sure why I have not tried onions? Jalapeño are one of my favorites to dehydrate.
I enjoy watching your channel you always have a lot of good information😊❤ Find garlic onion powder makes a really good stew thickener . Drying onions outside works really good in July and August And a small greenhouse works really good to keep the bugs and the birds out of your drying vegetables.
We freeze-dried our crop of onions last summer. We had chopped them in one of those choppers, so they were somewhat uniform. I vacuum sealed them in smallish packages and use them in my soups, pasta sauces, etc. I love them because they pretty much disappear in the cooked dishes, but the flavor and nutrition is all there. I always look forward to your very informative videos. Thank you.
I look forward to doing this one day soon. We buy ours from Costco. I used to put the dried onions in my blendtec to make onion powder. Then I started just using the big dried mince as is.... I'm addicted. I always loved them but I've recently begun putting them until absolutely everything and the flavor is fantastic! ❤
Re: washing onions. You haven't been to my grocery. There have been soooo many times that I've seen produce hit the floor and be put back in the bin. And countless times, somebody sneezed right into the bin, wipe their nose on their hand and then use that hand to continue to sort produce. It's not as bad with bagged produce, but I'm sure all this goes on at the plant that bagged your produce. So I always was any produce. I just don't know where it's been or who's touched it. If you're going to wash onions, do it just before using. 💖🌞🌵😷
I haven't watched a video of yours in forever. The Lord brought you to mind, thankfully, it does not matter who I'm subscribed to, they send me who ever. 😐catch ya later!🤗
If we do not have a freeze dryer how long would one dry onions in the oven on a cookie sheet with parchment paper n what temperature! Thank you so much! 😊😊
ok when you say Freeze-dried do you mean to put them in the freezer and leave them in until frozen ? I don't understand. Can you elaborate ? Ok this is what I do. I chop my onions, and put in chopped bell peppers and put them in a freezer bag, and put them in the freezer. So when I am ready to make home made chili or spaghetti, I throw the bag of onions and bell peppers in the mix and it turns out great. I am still puzzled about the freeze dried onions though. I would love to make my own onion powder, but I would have to use my oven. What temps would I have to use my oven at to dry them ? Love your channel. Thank you.
Jeni~ Here is an episode we made on Freeze Drying: th-cam.com/video/HeD6lAgCZgw/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared I hope it helps you. I love your comment about onions and bell peppers.
Happy New Year Christa! This is late but just thought I would throw this in from the Merriam-Webster online dictionary: NEXTLY adverb next·ly: in the next place : so as to be or come next Use liberally- LOL 🙂

It is certainly an investment, and the price varies. Check out bit.ly/harvest_right to see their latest deal they have going. I believe they are worth every penny!
Spread them on a pan just like you saw me do here, set the oven to the very lowest it will go. (most ovens only go down to 170 degrees)(...and then crack the door of the oven open if you don't mind the house being filled with the smell!) Set the timer for 1 hour and check them. Then add 10 minutes at a time until they are all shriveled up little crisps like the dehydrated onions I showed. Make sure they are 100% dry and not pliable at all when you store them in a jar, and I would add a Silica Gel moisture absorber to those just to be extra sure they stay dry in the jar. I hope this helps! YES! do it with garlic as well!
Before I got a dehydrator, I used a 100w reptile bulb set on the top rack of the oven and a small personal fan pointed away from the product. Run the electric cords out the oven door which will also allow moisture to escape. This creates enough heat and air circulation to dry gently.
Nah, no 2nd-opinioning here. Sweetie Pie does the onioning just like you do; except she has to do it indoors on the winter & it brings tears to her eyes!
I watch for all the great information and plus I truly think you are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. I am juat a regular gal and wanted to give you that compliment. 😊
Just curious, why are you bothered so much that you would even mention them in this video? You do you. Who cares what people say as long as you are happy?
I throw about 5 popcorn kernels into my onion powder and it keeps from clumping. DE works too. Love your videos.
Wow! I didn’t know about popcorn kernels. Thanks for sharing,
My granny would place a couple grains of rice in the salt shaker

You could use them for pork. Apple with pork is a wonderful combination.

Thank you for posting these instructions on how to make onion powder. It's getting to where even small bottles of spices are very expensive.
Glad it was helpful! I agree!
Not only expensive, but has so many harmful additives added to it. 😊
Love your videos❤

I grow those Egyptian Walking onions and dehydrate them. Sometimes I powder them but more often I use them like chives. The flavor is great!
I've grown Egyptian walking onions for years, never thought about dehydrating them! Thank you so much
My favorite way is to have hubby peel and cut the onions 😂
I had no idea that onions can be propagated this way. Thank you and may God bless you and yours.

I remember you talking about a bush in your yard that has peppery leaves. Will you please remind me what it is? Thank you! ❤️
I loved this video! Can't wait to make my own onion powder! I'll find the video about making vanilla too!
You can also use a coffee grinder.
You can use a spoon to skin an onion and remove egg shells.

Incredible video! I’ve only recently started using onion powder, after realizing it takes my sauces into the stratosphere! Thank you!
I often use all onion powder and dried onion bits and a lil fresh minced onion.they each have a slight diff taste

Save your onion skins for either an anti biotic tea, or save a bunch for making beef or ckn bone broth.
I hope all is well with you after the tornado came through your area!

I haven't googled it yet, but I want to try the over method. My question is, what temperature and how long? Thank you for your knowledge!

Love it!

How much is a freeze drier
It is certainly an investment, and the price varies. Check out bit.ly/harvest_right to see their latest deal they have going. I believe they are worth every penny!
How would you do it in a conventional oven?
It needs to have a built in fan.
Hope you don't mind me asking...did you buy your freeze dryer or did harvest right give it to you??
I don’t know how she got it, but they work really well and it is a great company.
Hey, I'm older than "45" , (startin to armpit) , what would it take to get in your onion unique wonderful garden?
Your comment is inappropriate.
Beautiful as ever. Proverbs 31 woman 😉
How do you dry the onion in the oven? Can you also dru garlic in the oven for garlic powder?

awesome
♥️💯‼️🙏
I do this with garlic too!!!
Wonderful! Yes, it is great for garlic!
No problem, everyone has a 5000 dollars freezedryer at home. Practical recipe!
Did you miss the dehydrator, oven, sun options? 😂
Don't forget onions make you cry, so place, and hold an unlit match stick in your mouth like a toothpick. Trust me, it helps!
wow! I just put it in the dehydrator and then threw it in the blender! maybe a little sugar...but i'm simple.
I, eat raw onions and accompany all my dishes.
Nice
Thank you, Jeff!
My favorite way to peel onions is to have someone else to do it. It’s very unbecoming of a man to cry. 😂
Youre very lovely.
Enjoy your videos
Just curious, why are you bothered so much that you would even mention them in this video? You do you. Who cares what people say as long as you are happy?
