How To Get Duck Hunt to Work on HDTV's Right NOW! | ConsoleKits

  • Check out the test results for NESLCDMOD. We’ve entered a new era in retro gaming!
    This is the Zapper I got. Looks like they are only $6 on Amazon amzn.to/2QVaqRe
    There appears to be 2 problems getting Duck Hunt To work on an LCD:
    1. Display Lag.
    2. Zapper and LCD compatibility.
    The fix?
    The problem with the lag in modern displays is handled by using a modified from provided by neslcdmod.com.
    The second problem is fixed by using an aftermarket Zapper which is evidently able to detect the change in lighting on an LCD better than the one made in the 80s by Nintendo.

    Not that Zappers aren't sensitive enough, they're too sensitive. The reason they don't work on LCDs is because LCDs have a very miniscule amount of lag (some are worse in fact). It throws the sensor in the Zapper for a loop in 2 duck game because (only if you're lucky) you can shoot one duck and the other duck dies because of a one or two frame latency.

      Awesome insight.

    • @michaeldavis6473
      @michaeldavis6473 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it’s because the nes zapper is like a camera. It takes a picture of the screen but only works on a crt by way of reflection on a glass screen.

    • @Wflash00
      @Wflash00 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@michaeldavis6473 Yeah, you could compare the Zapper to a camera; a camera that only has one pixel. And you're right about the lighting, it's also a key factor since the backlight in LCDs don't shine directly out unlike the beam of a CRT, but there are very rare instances where you can actually get it to work on a plasma or LED TV
      But the timing of the video is the crucial part though. The game acts in real time to check if what the Zapper sees is the white square, and on what frame, to determine A. if a duck was hit, and B. which duck. If there is even one frame of input lag, the game will count it as a miss (or like I said, the other duck will die)

      @@Wflash00 "First, let’s reframe the question slightly so we’re using more precise terms. The issue you’ve uncovered isn’t about the difference between CRT and HDTVs (because there were, in the early days, consumer HDTVs built around CRT technology). It isn’t about resolution, it’s about how the display is rendered. To frame it more accurately would be to say that it’s about the difference between CRT/analog video and LCD/digital video.
      Before we look at the core of the issue, however, let’s look at how the Zapper functions and interacts with the NES and television. A lot of people, and certainly most of the kids that played the NES back in the day, were under the impression that the Zapper actually shot something towards the television, much like a TV remote sending a signal to a television set. The Zapper does nothing of the sort (and what, exactly, on the television would be able to receive the signal and send it to the NES?). The only connection between the Zapper and the NES is the cord, and for good reason. The Zapper isn’t as much a gun as it is a sensor, a very simple light sensor. The Zapper doesn’t shoot anything, it detects patterns of light on the screen in front of it. This was true of all light-gun accessories for all video game systems of the era (and preceding it). They were all just simple light sensors housed in deceptively gun-like cases."

      @thewoobutchannel2276 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      right and wrong, the reason why it only works on a CRT TV is because it had a CRT filter inside the gun. Or in other terms, the zapper detected the infrared light coming from the CRT TV's to make it more accurate, and lcd tvs don't have inferred light coming out of the display, and lcd tvs don't have a fast enough input delay for it to capture so it detectsit as a miss shot.

      With auto I am getting delay 2. Does that mean my panel has about 2 frames of lag. (that's been my unscientific estimation)

    • @neslcdmod9121
      @neslcdmod9121 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it is close to real. So if your console is 60Hz, then your setup delay is approximately 33 ms. But we need some confirmation from those who knows exactly :)

  • @Raevenswood
    @Raevenswood 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    “Not sensitive enough” is not the issue the issue is the analog CRT TV’s have scan lines that form the picture and the Nintendo gun is calibrated to the refresh rate of crt screens. Since the modern flat screen is progressive scan the gun can’t pick up the colors like it does on an old CRT screen. The aftermarket zapper must just be calibrated to pick up progressive images. Good tip on that though I’ll have to get myself one do these for the NES I just bought

    What does delay mean does a Roku tv have delay ??? Anyone know

    • @ConsoleKits
      @ConsoleKits  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      All LCDs have some delay compared to a CRT. If you slowed down a CRT and RokuTV on exactly the same content, the RokuTV would probably be 16ms to 50ms delayed from the CRT. That’s enough delay for DuckHunt to think you always missed the bird.
      Duckhunt expect no delay. However, the LCDMod allows you to adjust the delay of the game logic to attempt to synchronize the game logic with the delay from an LCD.

    Hi Justin console kits where can I buy the aftermarket nes zapper ? Will it work with any nes shooting game ? All you need is that aftermarket zapper and that’s it ? Wish there was aftermarket ps1 ps2 and sega Saturn guns that work on lcd screens , please let me know thanks

    • @ConsoleKits

      Hyperkin turned this into a product:
      amzn.to/3ELaOx5
      This works with the original NES console and Mario/duck hunt. The aftermarket zapper can detect light changes on LCD, and the cartridge adapter modifies the timing of the game like a game genie.
      If you have an everdrive, there are rom patches for a few more games on neslcdmod.com
