They take debt and use their business as collateral. NBA doesn’t want you to put up X percent and get a loan from a bank. Only few guys like balmer are or can get liquid 3-4 billion very quickly . Ishbia for example definitely has a big debt portion but his business is killing it so NBA doesn’t mind. The NBA also wants owners in fields that can directly benefit them too. It’s like starting a restaurant with a buddy who also is in the real estate space. He can provide value and also help you scale through his other expertise. Everything is calculated. NFL saw balmer and want Bezos now. 50+ billion net worth is a whole other different ball game/level of ally and partner. Balmer’s net worth is pretty much around what the entire nba would be worth if it went on sale today. Teams are going for about 10x revenue. NBA just did over 10 billion and balmer is worth 133 B. If I’m buying the Celtics, I want it for 5.7 and if im selling I want to get 6.1. As a seller I want 30% more than what the Mavs sold for because history, legacy and value to the league. The NBA is about to go to a different level the next 10 year. Don’t listen to the hype of rating dying. NBA and basketball is about to be the second biggest global sport after soccer. It’s a money printing business. Also why I think the NBA wants to weed out the Buss family. They’ve extended their stay. It’s time for real money to own a real team. This is the pride and backbone of the NBA. The lakers are the pinnacle franchise. They need a real, structured, and heavily backed ownership. Just look at Real Madrid. World class ownership does wonders.

Since I have been a Celtics fan the worst owner of the team was John Y Brown which almost drove ‘Red’ Auerbach to the hated NY Knicks. Thankfully the late great Wil McDonough wrote an article in the Boston Globe which forced John Y Brown to sell the team to Harry Mangurian. The guy was absolutely clueless, and thank goodness ‘Red’ stayed with the Celtics.
