    That was smashing mate :-)
I was there with you, but when i was 17 :-)
Its nice to see someone still enjoys the old puch maxi's, i havnt seen one in the uk for more than 10 years.
I love the simplicity of the machines, reliable :-)
Shame the choke rod is broken off :-(
Mine had all the ignition parts in the side the metal side cover, that external coil looks very wrong on a puch, but perhaps my machine was older so i suppose things change.
Smashing tutorial, Even better a second time :-)

Cleaning my carburetor for the first time by myself. The darn top end popped apart and your video helped me put my carburetor back together! Hopefully I put that little metal ring on the needle at the right level. Thank you.

I've cleaned many carbs over the years. With varying degrees of success. If all the videos were as good as this one all those carbs would be clean. This is the best carb cleaning demonstration I've ever watched! Sabed me lots of time and aggravation. Just getting ready to clean a similar one myself! Also very neat carburetor. Interesting the difference in the original European carbs (well designed) with svrews that don't get lost and alignment grooves to later Japanese (and now Chinese).versions without those features. Thanks for anothet great video. Do you have a Patreon page? I will gladly support your efforts!

I use guitar strings to clean the jets and passages. I don't use compressed air, I use spray carburetor cleaner instead. I also soak really dirty parts in liquid carburetor cleaner. I have found that just putting a wrench on a hex, like on the bottom of that float bowl will easily chew up the soft aluminum. I use a high quality 6 point socket, and put a piece of blue paper/cloth shop towel between the socket and the bowl. You can use a 1/4" drive socket to install the carb retainer bolt, you just have to have a really good feel for it. It is EASILY overtightened. I use Kroil for penetrating fluid. I'd be REALLY careful about using the idle adjust screw to try and unstick the slide. Remember what he said about the carb being made of really soft stuff. I would let it soak in Kroil for days before trying that. I noticed he is using Task Force tools, they come from Lowes, I would at least use Kobalt (Lowes) or Husky (Home Depot) I use Snap On, SK, Mac, and older Craftsman. chinese tools will destroy anything. I usually use the blunt end of an old drill bit that is just slightly smaller than the float pin to remove it. If it is stuck, take a very small hammer and tap on it. Since the drill bit is slightly smaller, you can use it to push the pin all the way out. If you are going to be cleaning a lot of carbs, I recommend getting an ultrasonic cleaner from Harbor Freight. Saves a LOT of hand cleaning. Aftermarket Bing float bowl gaskets often don't fit properly, and tend to leak. Getting the throttle cable down through the spring and into the small hole in the slide is the hardest part. If you've done it enough that you don't have to fumble with it and do it several times before getting it the first time, you probably didn't need to watch this video.

Thank you! I have a feeling it might be a US/UK model difference, as every Puch I own, plus pictures of Puchs I've seen in US based parts manuals have a bulky external coil. I've also had others from across the pond comment in a similar fashion. A friend of mine bought a modern aftermarket stator plate and that had an integrated coil that went behind the metal flywheel cover, I like that design a little more!

Ive also connected the throttle cable and its either so tight the throttle wont turn, or so lose the cable just flops around. What am I doing wrong. 1963 DS60 Puch

I know the slide should go back together that easy but I had some issues with the throttle cable not wanting to be that far out on mine, so I left the spring off until after I got the cable in the holes then I put the cable through the spring and turned it like a screw until it went though the whole thing and there's no real difference in anything but methods

anybody make a decent carb rebuild kit for these things? all I see is junk. Carb alternative for a stock punch to give me a little more power?

    • @TravisTutorial
      @TravisTutorial  2 ปีที่แล้ว

How bad is the carb? If it isn't completely seized up and full of crud, usually you can get away with just a new float needle.
The aftermarket parts in many of the rebuild kits aren't great, the fiber based float bowl gaskets don't fit, for example, but generally you can reuse the embedded float bowl gasket so long as it is intact, the needle is really what keeps it from overflowing.
Top gasket can actually be reused too, the mating surfaces up there are actually pretty flat.
If the carb is real bad it's probably better to get a used one from MopedArmy or one of the Facebook groups, people have buckets of 12mm bings.
For upgrade, you'll see more gains from an expansion chamber pipe than a bigger carb, but a 14mm or 15mm bing will go on your stock intake. If you want the "maximum easy" way, some opt for a 14.14 Dellorto SHA + intake for Puch.

+Tyson Klaassen Fair point, I didn't think anyone actually kept those. It's more of a hassle if it gets clogged compared to an inline filter between the tank and carb.

TravisTutorial I too got stump for awhile... a restless night before I realized I may have missed something.. Myron's Moped's website had a diagram... who would would put a filter inside a carburetor ? ... well.. Bing did ! . Really inline filters are the norm. lesson here, always do your homework first.
