What a deightful, fresh approach to our national history. I once lived quite close to Ferrybridge, and I never knew any of this! Thank you very much.

This seems like a really good account of this battle, which was overshadowed by events the following day and largely forgotten about. The death of Lord Clifford was a significant loss to the Lancastrian cause. Very well presented.

Nice to see you on location, its interesting how influential this battle was on the outcome of Towton yet it is'nt recognised as such, well done for raising the point.

@@CatherineWarr Few battle's are fought in isolation, its easy to overlook the run up a battle which can have far reaching consequences.

Really enjoyed this. Been listening to Toby Clements Winter Pilgrims that describes in detail the battle of Ferrybridge with all the dead Yorkist soldiers piling up on the bridge. Glad Clifford got his after what he did to Edward's brother at Wakefield.

Great stuff! I certainly learned something new, I do have a geeky interest in medieval history, but is specifically 13th century, mostly Henry III and Edward I, so I'm not too knowledgable about the Wars of the Roses. Thanks for helping to fill the blanks!

That was amazing. I've heard the name Ferrybridge before as my dad used to work at the power station but I never put any thought into the history surrounding the place! Love it! Keep em coming ;-)

don't forget the golf course which is where the Yorkists gathered on the Castleford side of the river, interesting area a full blown Roman chariot was found very close to the golf course when the motorway was being re rooted

A bridge has been there since the Romans built the first. It has been rebuilt many times. Then it was a toll bridge for years. I lived in Brotherton before I moved to Sherburn in Elmet. The Yorkist army marched along Low Street Brotherton which continued to Sherburn where I lived. Of interest too the railway bridge over the River Aire to the power station was originally built by Robert Louis Stevenson of Rocket train fame

My ancestors fought in the forces of the Lords Clifford and the only cavalry they, or any other force of that time had, were any men-at-arms (nobles, knights or esquires) that chose to remain mounted. English armies of the period nearly exclusively fought on foot with the majority being archers or billmen with a smaller proportion of their betters, mentioned above. However, some of these archers and billmen had their own horses, got paid extra for them, and rode to battle but dismounted to fight, and that's where the generic term in this case, "cavalry" came from.

    • @nialloneill5097

It would be interesting to see some facts and figures, as I have a strong feeling war and fighting were not isolated to the British Isles, but common throughout Europe, and the greater world at large. Even now there are powerful people planning for wars, despite the fact that their weapons could destroy the earth. Easy to see why they don't care about any ecological damage and climate change issues. My conclusion is that man has developed a destructive, competitive streak that will soon lead to WW3, amidst a nuclear holocaust, and the annihilation of vast swathes of the earth, after which the current mankind will be history, as history is always in the making, especially when we are surrounded by people who lust for power, land, riches, and blood. And that's why our and others history is full of a catalogue of wars, violence and death. And what's more remarkable is, nobody has succeeded in changing the school curriculums, which may have changed things over time, something I sense we don't have now, for now we must reap what we have sown, as many native Indian prophecies have foretold us recently.
