Valve was awesome, they were so cool back then. They literally let portal, counter strike, and probably a few more games get built by their fans because they were extremely nice.
Lol I have two friends who seem to be remembering wrong that you needed to pay to use steam, I told them the app itself was free but you had to buy the games inside
With all the negative news out there in the games industry (and there's a lot) it's nice to see a fluffy piece like this as well as informative too for what we take for granted today.
All platforms are learning from steam, LoL making an auto chess rip off, EPIC games making FortNite customizable a bit. Directly or indirectly, steam is really affecting other game platforms.
In a weird way I miss the 90's and dial up internet, it made it feel like a special occasion when going "online" along with the long drawn out connection noise and taking all phone lines down in the house with it. Good times.
Steam, as software and as a means of buying games, is pretty nice. I like the fact that I can go down to a gas station and pick up a prepaid card to buy games (often at absurd discounts) and easily install them. I also like the fact that there is so much functionality to the client and community, though Steam forums absolutely suck in terms of the software they use (+1 for GOG, though their forum software is still pretty barebones). However, I'd honestly trade all of the good stuff Steam does if I could have fully DRM-free gaming for all my games. I always prioritize GOG because of this, despite the fact that they're harder to buy games from (as I don't have a credit card) and the fact that GOG Galaxy -- for all its brilliance -- still has a way to go before it matches Steam's client in terms of features. So yeah, for me, Steam is a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it typically makes PC gaming completely painless. However, on the other hand, you don't own a single thing you buy on Steam, which really rubs me the wrong way. I want to own what I buy, I want to be able to choose whether or not I use a client to play my games and I want to be able to backup all of my game files independent of any third-party software. Sadly, it seems like most gamers don't care about the fact that they own nothing in gaming, which is frustrating... because seriously, the DRM issue is so deeply important.
We still had dial up when i first brought home HL2. Was so excited to unbox the cd or dvd and play it and it turned out i had to d/l it! man i was outraged because it took forever and made for a larger internet bill, why not just include the data on a physical medium in the box I took off the shelf? For years i maintained this stance on Steam feeling like it was for the privileged few who have good internet, good computers and a credit card. And then I started getting into the work force with my first job, finally got a credit card to buy games and now with the help of Paypal I'm a lvl 12 with 175 games. I'm probably never going to own a house or a fancy car or be able to go on holiday but at least I can escape into Northgard. Needless to say, I don't have a VR headset yet, but I imagine just like the jump I took from dial up to broadband, it's just around the corner.
Steam was originally just a service where you installed and played HL1 and HL2 mods because back in the day you had to manually download patches and it was a bit of a convoluted mess. It wasn't until around 2009 that Steam became the service that everyone uses today because by then cable internet was mainstream and digital downloads started replacing physical copies. My steam account is from October 2003 as well. : )
I have never had a need to use the video speed changer before when watching a youtube video, the delivery and sound quality was surprisingly poor that the best way to watch the video was at 1.5 speed.
Nah, microsoft isn't really a competitor. Microsoft for the past while has been warming up to valve, and steam and are now releasing their games on steam as well.
it's really amusing to be old enough to remember when HL2 released and remember the collective groan from the average gamer of having to install this random extra software just to be able to install a game
Remember CS 1.6 at Netcafe's, they constantly had to buy new keys cause of all the banning ahhah what a gold mine for Valve. Brilliant business model..That alone probably paid all their development costs for 10+ years..
Nice video but the speed at which you talk is extremely slow, unnecessarily dragging the video. In future videos, avoid stopping as much in sentences and try to make your words flow a bit more consistently and smoother :)

You could put that in air quotes, and I would believe it's ironic. Because it's very right but it sounds so wrong.
Black messa was released last year. It's totally fan made game.
I think I may have been high when writing this, I honestly don’t remember this

Pro Tip: Watch at 1.25x speed
Legend tip, thank you.
Thanks
1.5 is just fine
It's amazing how it sounds normal 😂
I need to look at the comments before I get halfway through
Great video, but your delivery is a touch slow, makes the video drag a bit. Happy to see you back and hope to see more content from you again.
Then turn the speed up

Dude has it been 2 years already? It really feels like a few months ago.
Anyway welcome back!

Why are you speaking so slowly like a robot?

This guy talks like a british version of Gman with all those pauses.
I have never had a need to use the video speed changer before when watching a youtube video, the delivery and sound quality was surprisingly poor that the best way to watch the video was at 1.5 speed.
Your voice has got even deeper in your absence Sir. Welcome back!

Shams you didnt include x-fire as a platform. Though they never sold games, but it looked like what steam/discord became.
Great video, very informative. Could you please reply with some sources you used?
No fucking way, was checking your chanel like 2 days ago wondering "whatever happened to jinzo"
I don't know why everybody keeps talking about the Steam rivals "Epic" and "Discord" when the real competitor is Microsoft.
Nah, microsoft isn't really a competitor. Microsoft for the past while has been warming up to valve, and steam and are now releasing their games on steam as well.
Adjust your pop filter, man. I'm glad to hear from you again, after the hiatus, but you gotta up your mic game (which will be low effort, huge gain).
Its amazing how many people don't know anything about steam apart from it been a digital platform
So long it's good to hear you back
it's really amusing to be old enough to remember when HL2 released and remember the collective groan from the average gamer of having to install this random extra software just to be able to install a game

I was pissed when Tribes (or was it Tribes 2) were forced to run on/through Steam. It ran like dog shit for quite a while.
You are alive!
