How to Make a Self-Binding Sherpa Fleece Blanket

  • • PRE-WASH and DRY the cotton fabric before cutting. Do not pre-wash the Sherpa Fleece •
    - Purchase SHERPA Fleece in most fabric shops and online:

I love this blanket because it's SO soft, it's easy to make, and looks totally high-end and professional when you're done. It's the best! Backed with very soft sherpa fleece, the fleece folds over to bind the edges of the blanket--which is a great technique for any blanket or quilt. I'll show you some tricks for getting perfect mitered corners as well. You're going to fall in love with this blanket. We already have!
    -------------------------------------------------------
    BLANKET DIMENSIONS:
    DOLL SIZE
    Top Fabric - 22" x 25"
    Back Fabric (Sherpa Fleece) - 28" x 31"
    TODDLER/LAP BLANKET SIZE
    Top Fabric - 38" x 52"
    Back Fabric (Sherpa Fleece) - 44" x 58"
    THROW BLANKET SIZE
    Top Fabric - 53" x 63"
Note: because most quilting cotton is only 42 inches wide, you will need to piece (sew together) two large pieces of fabric together to get a full size TOP fabric.
    Back Fabric (Sherpa Fleece) - 59" x 69"
Note: sherpa fleece is typically 60 inches wide, so you will only need one large piece of fleece for the back.
    ANY SIZE:
    Top Fabric -Desired finished dimensions
Back Fabric (Sherpa Fleece) - add 6 inches to both dimensions
    -------------------------------------------------------

I absolutely love that you don’t use any super fancy or hard methods. As a beginner I don’t have a lot of the fancy bells & whistles(such as the walking foot) so its so nice that you are using basic sewing products that beginners usually start off with!!❤️

I love this “self-binding” quilt! And video! I’ve never liked giving a blanket without quilting the inside down. I was given one for my son and laying him down on it (yes, we used to lie babies on their tummies sometimes back then, and when I went to check on him he was all tangled up in the blanket which had separated and he was struggling to breath, arms flailing, and very red in the face. Needless to say I panicked and was so grateful I sensed an urgency to go check on him! This happens especially when the baby can turn over onto their tummies.
    Great tutorial! Thank you.

I didn’t realize I was making a quilt. My first quilt ever and a newish sewer. I tried to make a throw and it ended up being half way to toddler size and the pins were pointless 🤣 either way this is the most proud I’ve ever been with any project. Thank you so much!

Anyone making a larger blanket, do yourself a big favor and wear rubber gloves, or maybe gardening gloves with rubber dots, when sewing this! It'll grip your fabric really well and your hands won't get so tired.

Any tips for preventing Sherpa from piling after it's washed? I love the material but ruined a Sherpa blanket by washing it.

    • @TWMAC2011
      @TWMAC2011 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@MH-ij9lx Perhaps wash it by itself. Other fabric textures can cause pilling (Just like washing towels without other fabrics).

Love this one Dana. Gotta make a baby shower gift and I’m making one of these with both sides flannel fabric. I used to watch you sew many moons ago and I loved your thread cutter. When I started searching for a new machine a few years ago, it had to have the auto cutter no exception. I ended up with a Brother and it does have auto cut and I love it. I’m so grateful to you for showing this feature in all your videos. I do love that cutter!!!
I would love to have a baby lock but they are out of my price range. I’ve learned that Baby Lock & Brother are owned by the same company. Maybe someday I can get a Baby Lock but I’m really happy with my Brother. It’s a great machine.

Neat Project! I like to sew my corners to make the mitre first...THEN cut off the bulk after I sew....but either way works...

Best sewing site! You’re inspiring, thanks. I’m thinking about purchasing a Babylock sewing machine now.

What a perfect tutorial! I'm a beginner sewing machine user and this video really gives me inspiration to learn to sew all different types of THINGS!!! Plus, your new sewing machine is beautiful! Can't wait to get better so I can reward myself with that!

You video was super helpful!! Made my very first baby blanket as a gift for a friend. It came out really well. I love my Babylock, too!! :)

I just want to put in my love of Baby Lock! I bought the cheapest model at first. I didn’t know how to sew and I didn’t want any distracting bells and whistles! It was fantastic to learn on! I loved sewing and my Baby Lock and I knew I could look forward to many happy years of my new hobby on what I realized was a great machine! I had lucked out! The nice lady at the sewing machine store steered me to the perfect machine! And then, I lucked out again! I won a Baby Lock! I know, crazy! This is the only thing of any substance that I have ever won! The new machine is fancier than my old machine and it does have many of those “bells and whistles” I was afraid of. But, I have to say, it is still easy to use and I love the extra features! So, I’m sorry, Dana, to jump into that first! I do love the blanket and I always enjoy your show! I just thought if I put it first, people might see it and read my fangirl views on Baby Lock! I honestly feel grateful to them. They made what I had always viewed as something hard and made it easy for me. I mean, I’m glad I took an introductory class at the Sewing Store, too. But if I hadn’t had such an easy machine to use, I probably wouldn’t have made it through! I’m sorry I don’t remember the name of the store right off hand, but if you’re from Washington State and want to know, I’ll try to find it for you!

Hahah. This is awesome! Thanks Beth for sharing!! I 100% agree, that a quality machine (even if it's the low-end, intro model) will make anyone love sewing so much more. Yay for Baby Lock! :) Thanks for chiming in :) Dana
