i went to japan a few years ago myself, and yep. i got lost on day 1 finding my hotel. ROFL
day 2 was a free day in tokyo, so just messed about at arcades, pokemon center etc, before i met up with an organised tour group i would be with for the next 2 weeks, which would leave tokyo and go from 1 town/city to another town/city. i did a lot of what jaiden did in this video, except visit that shrine, and the ghibli museum.
but on my last day i went along the Wakayama railway (Cat Railway!) to see Tama the station masters cat. i made sure to stop at every shrine along the railway and collect a stamp from each one for a small stamp paper book thing i was given, so i had proof i had been to each shrine! some shrines were like a 20-30 minute trek from the actual stations!
"SHE'S A HORRIBLE RECORD PLAYER!!" I dying LOL

I went to Japan in 2001...NO CELL PHONE APPS TO HELP! 😂 My friend had to rip the Tokyo subway map out of her phone book and translate all the Kanji into Roman letters for me. (After that it was fine. Sadly since 2001 I have forgotten all my hiragana and I'd be even worse off now. 😭 )
😁
The first time I visited Tokyo was before there was as much wifi and I didn't have a working cell phone... so I literally went to the HUB (my Japanese also wasn't good so I looked for an English speaker with access to a printer) when I needed directions to somewhere. They printed out a mapquest set of directions for me and I went on my way.... Without English announcements (which many lines have now) or anything, my Japanese improved pretty quickly after I moved there.
@@femme_fatalist I think before 2001 I refused to even have one of those Nokia candy bar phones. (This was April. Later on, 2001 made it more necessary to have one.) I was lucky though, in that my host in Tokyo was a former ESL student of mine, and in Osaka my host was a former student of a friend of mine, both really fluent translators, so I was able to rely on them. (Less in Tokyo as she had a proper job to go to. I had to wander around a bit. Really that trip is one of my best memories.
I realised that he films himself unpausing the video rather than cutting it while editing after giving his piece to the camera, makes his reaction feel more genuine if anything

@@SHUGYSJAPANHOUSE ✨
Nice thing about the subway system in Tokyo, at least when I visited there in 2007, is that Tokyo in general is very pedestrian-friendly so if you know the name of the basic neighborhood you’re trying to get to, you can get reasonably close and then just walk the rest of the way. It’s also nice that there’s often more than one line you can use to get there, so if you miss one train there’s another going the same way just a few minutes later.
The biggest issue I had there was not being able to read enough kanji to understand the food that was available. Part of that is me just being Autistic (I wasn’t diagnosed yet in 2006 so everyone just thought I was an obnoxious picky eater), but I get very anxious when I don’t know exactly what’s in something and can’t easily figure out if I’ll be able to handle the taste or texture. I ended up relying heavily on McDonalds because it was the only thing I could easily recognize. Really wish I could go back and get a second chance, but I would still be worried about unpredictable taste, or texture…or unexpected milk because I’m lactose-intolerant and the idea of having a “dairy surprise” while in a crowded area with no toilet in easy reach is a bit terrifying.
Unfortunately…by the time I can afford to go back, I’ll probably have a service dog by then, and the laws are so different that I just might not be able to safely travel there at all because I wouldn’t be able to bring my service dog (cardiac alert, PTSD-management, etc).
I think a learn something today bcs i really want to go to japan and my sister/cousin and good video 😁👍
Thank you.
Someday, please enjoy Japan so much.
7:48 ooohh, so that basically translates to english as the saying "take the leap" or "taking the leap." that's honestly pretty interesting! i wonder how many other languages have jumping-off-of-stuff related idioms about making decisions
Such a nice reaction!
Interesting to hear that most Japanese people would be too shy to speak to foreigners when my and my partner travelled to Japan, we had so many school kids come up to us to practice their English which was so cute! Jaiden: *doesn’t understand the train map*
Me, who went to China for summer vacation every other year when I was younger: I am already 300 light years ahead of you
There is a rail pass specifically for foreigners that gives you unlimited rides on most trains for your trip. There is a specific ticket counter just for this pass at each station where the attendants speak English. All you have to do is tell them where you are trying to go. They will give you a ticket with an assigned seat in the nicer part of the train (if there is one - usually on the longer train rides) or just a regular ticket. They will tell you the time for that train and where the platform is. It is super helpful and works for trains inside Tokyo and going from city to city. Almost all signs in Tokyo and major city’s have English translations to make navigating easier. You can collect this pass at the airport right near the train platform. I believe it is called a JR rail pass.
Jaiden needs to see this
Bro, I love the reaction! Some of the parts were wholesome and funny.
I’ve been waiting to watch this for AT LEAST a month. It’s been stashed in the back of my playlist waiting for so long
WORTH IT
I’m so glad I found your channel. It’s exactly what I need for quarantine.
Why is this video so dang underrated?
😊
I think why the train routes are so complicated is because of how many companies run around the same area. Like I think Yellow Line is Hanshin and Blue Line is Seibu (Going from the colors of the baseball teams they own).
I normally don't like watching reaction channels, but this is so wholesome, I am definitely subscribing
I must thank the recommendations for suggesting me your channel, I've been binge-watching your videos, you seem so wholesome!

I lost my glasses the other day and my grandma told me I didnt care about them, but you lost me in a Japanese airport
I have to thank the youtube gods for putting this video in my recommended. I love jaiden’s videos and this was an adorable reaction video. 💖
One small problem with the nice recommendation of 'guidance applications' (Hyperdia is great, and Google maps is also good) is this: you need to know that your normal SIM will either not work at all in Japan, or roaming charges will be really high. So you need a data SIM card. Best get one already in the airport.
You can also download 'offline maps' for your navigation app before you leave home. GPS works without WiFi or mobile data. Then you have at least a rough idea where you are. (GPS does not work very well when there is a lot of buildings.) But having a map is always good.
Ah. And -yes!- bring a towel (ask where to buy a 'te-nu-gui', they are not expensive). Japanese public toilets are everywhere and the are also very clean(!). But there are no towels - everyone is expected to have their own little hand towel. ("Always know where your towel is!" from 'The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy' is sound advice in Japan.)
The reaction is so wholesome and helpful and then "she's a horrible recorder player"
I'm joking
As someone who’s never set foot outside of North America, it’s really interesting to learn about Japanese history & trivia (while also seeing someone react to one of my fav TH-camrs right now)! I would love to go there someday!
