7:04 it's better to shoot at the lowest possible on the high base iso for low light. There are many technical videos about it, but it's rather simple: base iso gives you a balance between highlight and shadow dynamic range, while going below gives you more range in the shadows and going above gives you more range in the highlights. I think 1000 is the highest for the range of the 400 base, and 1250 is the lowest for the 3200 base. So, in broad daylight, shoot at 1000 for the best coverage of the highlights, and in the dark, shoot at 1250 (or 100 ofc) for the best coverage of the shadows.
Finally, an actual film DP using it the way it was meant to be used. Thank you. As a DP with over 20 years experience and 10 feature films under my belt.. Blackmagic to me has always been the most similar to Alexa. Have seen it used as a B or C cam many times next to Arri. After seeing wandering DPs breakdown of it and yours now, it seems like that stays true with the Pyxis and even expands a bit. Happy BM finally gave us the box form factor we always asked for! Cheers!

@@KittyGuerrillaFilms true. The Pyxis is only average in the rolling shutter department. However, the advances in Davinci and especially gyro flow have made rolling shutter easily correctable with little to no crop in needed. It’s a relatively painless process as well. Been using the false color with the blackmagic stuff since the day the pocket 6k original came out and felt the same way ever since. I shot exteriors for a shudder/amc feature with my p6k and Pentax takumars that match matched the Alexa a roll.
As a new film maker in the business I am looking into buying my first own cinema camera and with all the specs and features the Canon C400 seems to be the ultimate choice. It really has any feature you could ask for, but it is quite pricy compared to something like the Pyxis. You could even get either 2 Pyxis' or 1 C400. But breaking it down like this would be unfair to Canon, because the C400 doesnt require you to use external ND filters all the time. Sure you could bring a 0.3 and a 0.15, but stacking these, using only one or none is really all you'd need because you got a 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, 2.4 and 3.0 already built into the camera, while also being able to switch between 3 base ISOs, which are also all exactly 2 stops apart with the lowest base being at 800 rather than 400. The Dynamic range is aperantly as advertised 3 stops greater and you get many other great features. I was wondering if anyone of you guys believe the C400 is actually reasonable worth twice as much as a Pyxis for just the body.
Yo, that rig looks like a Plasma Canon, jk. I bought a few accessories for my rigs in the past two months. By looking at your rig confirms I made the right decision in buying the Hollyland Pyro S ($450 on Amazon) and Deity TC-1 3 Pack. I see you guys are using the Pyro 7, that's next item on my bucket list this month and the DJI Focus Pro. $3k for this camera is a great price, I might buy it, in the future
No built-in ND filters. Maybe for full production, but for run and gun I see this as another competitor beat out by the Ronin 4D. The price difference is negligible by the time you kit both of them out when you're shooting full-time... the ROI of faster setup time pays for itself. As always, your colorgrade is always killer!!! - TW
The ND’s were the game changing value proposition of these cameras and removing it is crazy. I was going to order but now I will skip for sure. They are just so useful in the 6k pro. Where I live an Fx6 will get you hired and the nd is amazing. Twice the cost but should pay for itself fairly fast. I wish I knew if Sony was dropping new cameras in the spring.
Did you have any problems with noise in those moodier environments? I was pretty dissapointed when I saw the camera tests between the new full frame sensor and the now older 6k and 6k pro.
I actually got quoted about $11,300 euros to upgrade my Alexa Plus 4:3 to an Arri Alexa SXT Plus, which offers 6:5 Anamorphic in 4K Cine and 2K prores, along with Open Gate 3.4K and 4K cine. Glad I held off when Pyxis announced Open Gate mode, along with 6:5 Anamorphic. Those are my 2 top reasons to buy the PL mount version, along with the external monitor and EVF. For about $7.5K in price for those add-ons.I can't complain with those features.
Great video as always. I have been doubtful about blackmagic cameras in terms of their “robustness”. I don’t know how far they have come but the cinema cameras were awful, felt cheap and didn’t hear good things about URSA either. I was planning to buy an fx3 but then this one came out with a reasonable price. However my past experiences are not so good with BM-Cameras, so I am not sure whether I should take the risk or not. And you mentioned also the weird noise in shadows which is a BM classic.
Great review. I do think built in NDs and a fast readout would have made this a much more compelling offering. When it comes to the rolling shutter, it’s not so much that viewers will say, “oh, that fence looks like it’s leaning”… For the most part such details are only noticed by those doing the production. However, the viewer will feel the effects of the rolling shutter by becoming nauseated when viewing the footage. In my opinion this is a bigger concern.
If you use spherical lenses instead of anamorphic the issue is gone. Anamorphics amplified significantly rolling shutter artifacts because they optically distort the periphery of the image just too much. In my oipinion, you shouldnt use anamorphics on these types of scenes (guys fighting) where there is a lot of camera movement and panning, unless you are using a global shutter sensor.
Nice Video and nicely lit shots, but shooting in Braw (with exposure index and not Iso) does just shift your dynamic range by changing the iso. The highlights dont clip that quick, they are actually saved when you shoot and expose to higher iso. Except rolling shutter performance. That’s one of the cinematic feelings from high end cameras like arri. Try to do handheld style action like extraction with pyxis, see how that goes
I always try to shoot 800 on daylight or dark interiors with sunlight blasting through the windows. I'm not entirely sure why you don't push up the ISO range, since any issues with noise are easily overcome with light denoising
@@TreyMotes There is no issue if you can denoise anyway. Some shooting conditions have extreme highlights and dark shadows, like the interior of a restaurant or a house. It's not a good idea to be enslaved to one particular ISO number.
Few things for anyone considering this camera: 1. Nad footage from any of them is the result of the user not understanding how their respective sensors behave.
As a former BMCC6K owner that used it in more in tight shooting windows without a team(solo shooter), I was overall disappointed with it. I think the image can look amazing, especially for the price, but that 400 base ISO is just not good enough for the type of shoots I'm on and 3200 is unusable to me. I think overall the PYXIS is confusing because for the types of jobs its best suited for, you're generally renting something better anyways. Maybe it makes sense for a b/c cam if you're shooting with the new URSA 17k, almost like a crash cam or something but I just don't get it. For most lower level content creators, you're 100% better off with an a7s3 or s5iix because that 4% better image quality isn't going to make a difference to your clients and those other cameras will just make your life easier.. Glad to see a BM cube camera though, they just need a new sensor in the next iteration to sell me on it.

Try the ursa 12k sensor. Fixed pattern noise has always been a problem but for those type of jobs that have great lighting it’s never a problem
