Really cool. I got a CS-01 MKII about ten years ago and got the UMR-2 kit directly from Highly Liquid. I know enough about electronics to be dangerous, but don't know where to start without directions. The owner of Highly Liquid didn't have any real directions for me to follow and refused to guide me along. I burned through one UMR-2 board after the traces came up on the board when soldering, so Highly Liquid replaced it. After tinkering around a bit with it, I realized that without concise instructions I wouldn't be able to do this on my own because the MKII version was different enough from the MKI version and it sat for a few years. No one seemed to want to help me and at the time, I didn't know any synth techs in my area. I thought I got lucky when I discovered the woman I was seeing at the time had an electronic engineer for a father and he promised to fix it for me, since he had experience with oscillators and such. I gave it to him with a promise by him that he'd have it 'back to me shortly'. It sat with him for nearly four years before I finally got it back in an unknown state of 'repair'. Fast forward just a couple of months ago from September 2022 and I gave it to my synth tech, who is amazing. He then discovered that my ex's dad had also blown up the second UMR-2 and we had to purchase another one! Finally, I now have a MIDIed CS-01 MKII and it's all over my music! For such a little synth it really is powerful.
Thank you for extra info for UMR-2 installation, I have been holding off installing mine as I really wasn't sure about the data select lines going in to the keyboard matrix
Thanks for the vid. Really useful info and docs (much appreciated). I've just picked up a mint CS01 and ordered the UMR2. I'm going to use 3.5mm TRS sockets on mine, so I don't need the full size DIN sockets. Will probably do In/Out so I can patch it up to my modular. Have you experimented with the breath controller input? My understanding is it's 0v to -12v (stereo plug) ground and middle ring control (tip is power). Looking to try that with my Eurorack stuff. Thanks!
hi thanks for the kind words. No haven't tried the breath input as I got a bit phased when I nearly melted the little synth. So kind of put it all back together and just hoped for the best. It's a nice little synth and has a certain sound that can be used in most musical genres
these are quite reliable, see if there is any wires off on the inside. could be power led is lit but no power to electronics. Really needs a tech to troubleshoot further
Hi. I just wondering what you connected matrix. I have done this UMR2 mod exactly like manual says, all steps I checked 3 times but still I have no sound. Midi incoming but nothing happened, also CS keyboard not working. If I disconnect UMR then CS work like should.. perfect. I checked everything, all connections is nice and clean. UMR checked and separately it works Ok but not with CS. Could you please give me some ideas how to get it working? Thank you
you probably can, but note my speaker was damaged. I don't suggest everyone throw away their speaker! This is just my example with my particular synth.
There's not much room in the case for the size of the UMR-2 to fit with the additional wiring you need to run. The speaker sounds like crap anyway so it's really a no brainer to slot the UMR-2 into that area. My tech put the jacks around back, but on the MK2 version the back panel is plastic instead of metal. I have seen people do an individual project box with a cable to the synth that you could then hook up, but that implementation struck me as even more cumbersome.
The creation of the waveform is not analog. There’s no voltage generating the waveforms, they come directly out of the chip. When we say “analog synth” we mean it’s using electricity to generate the waveforms. I definitely could be wrong here so other feel free to chip in. Hybrid is a more apt description perhaps
@@waheex I think you’ll find even though it’s coming from a chip , the waveforms are still generated from voltages albeit internally within the chip. Not being generated by discrete components does not make it not analogue. If what your saying is correct you would have to rewrite a lot of synth definitions. The cs01 is definitely a VCO not a DCO

What about adding external pots for the resonance, filter and osc tune in place of the internal trimmers? Possible?

sure thing. Yes you could extend the wires to external pots and I'm sure circuit bending is possible with this synth.
My CS-01-II is broken. The LED turn red when I power it ON, but I have no longer sounds...

there's gotta be a cleaner way to install the midi mod. you cant keep the speaker!? there has to be a way..

It is not digital, it’s definitely analogue.
