    Excellent video - beautiful amp. Thank you!
    One FYI though - the filter buttons are supposed to stay in when filters are activated. Push again to release.

      Good catch, I have a 600 here currently and just confirmed that when depressed the button stays in. There may have been a part missing on this 650 or the spring installed incorrectly when I installed the face.

    This unit is amazing, got one fully restored and it beats all modern BS with huge price cost.

    Great video. I had a 650 in college in late 70s that worked and looked perfect, and eventually sold it when my kids were small. The original lamp was off white. The detent always worked on mine. It was awesome. I could just never afford a set of speakers to do it justice.

    I have a 650/650T set. Yep, older brother bought in the PX. He downsized and gave them to me. Original boxes, manuals and brochures. Over the next couple of years it will be time to find new homes for them. Also, my C28/MR77/MC2150 system. It's been fun!
    I can definitely corroborate that the controls are absolutely creamy smooth to the touch.

    The 600/650 is so sweet. The KA-7300 is a good cheaper alternative - "only" 65wpc, but at the time they were released, the only two Kenwoods with true dual mono power supplies with independent transformers were the 600 and the KA-7300.
    Something cool to note is that because of that dual mono design, the balance switch isn't like on other amps where you're just stealing power from the other channel.

    internally, this unit looks very much like my KA-9150. Which is due to its complexity hard to service - especially the crammed pre amp section. Since I'm not a tech, I had to invest in it after the amp had failed just days after purchase. Bummer, but I'm glad I did. This technology is very worth saving. What I like most about these amps is the stereo-width/imaging these dual mono-designs can produce. It's downright spectacular. Maybe I'll bump into a Supreme one day...

    Hi, do you have info regarding the 650’s serial numbers? Production start date and end? any special modifications within the production run? Thanks for great video!

    Very cool. I have a Yamaha MX2000. I don't think this Kenwood is esthetically pleasing. Would love to compare with the Yamaha A/B

    • @NovaluxStereophonic
      @NovaluxStereophonic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A more appropriate comparison would probably be your amp vs. the Kenwood 700M

    • @ethorii
      @ethorii 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NovaluxStereophonic Yes as the Yamaha is only an amp with gain knobs on the rear. This Kenwood you described has eq and balance features I didn't even know existed.

    I just can't stand that green light (led?) :-D The original one is reddish (I also own one, together with its Model 650T companion)
    Very nice and very rare - Best regards

    • @NovaluxStereophonic
      @NovaluxStereophonic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      On the LED a matter of preference for sure. The originals that I have seen are a warm white incandescent that looks like a subdued cream when it comes through the lens. My preference after experimentation was green but I completely understand the desire to keep these original. Thank you so much for watching!

    I have a 600 that has been in a box for a very long time. Would you power it on and look for smoke or simply do a complete recap kit rebuild first? Do you have a valid source. I saw a kit on ebay. This was my amp I bought in 1978. It worked perfectly when stored. I'm a veteran retired electronics tech. Wondering my steps on this beside a physical look at the boards for cap or glue damage before a run test. Great video. I appreciate your insights.

    • @NovaluxStereophonic
      @NovaluxStereophonic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do not buy a recap kit on eBay. You will most certainly receive incorrectly sized parts that are not optimized for the application, Not many caps fail in these units it’s usually transistors in the amp boards that go first. I would take it to a technician and have it evaluated before making any decisions. After sitting that long it may just need to be carefully powered up and controls cleaned.

    • @charmerxxx
      @charmerxxx ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NovaluxStereophonic Thanks, I was a consumer tech. sold my variac and scope. I'll give it a go over first. I remember the main filters being leaky. Saw Digicon has the exacts. I'll just do the usual inspect clean checkout. Are you using crc stuff for cleaning controls?

    • @charmerxxx
      @charmerxxx ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NovaluxStereophonic This worked before storage. Do the fets and transistors fail with unuse. I remember old Galium stuff could grow.

    • @NovaluxStereophonic
      @NovaluxStereophonic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@charmerxxx For contact cleaner I use deoxit F5 for carbon controls and an contact cleaner from MG chemicals for metal on metal. For the main filters it’s tough to find one with only 2 terminals the last set that so did I used 5 terminal solder log, worked fine but not as clean of a finished product as screw terminals with ring terminations.

    • @NovaluxStereophonic
      @NovaluxStereophonic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@charmerxxx I have not seen any preamp FETs or the nice Sony IC fail in any of the 4 units that I have worked on. It’s usually the smaller transistors on the amp boards. I think they just fail with extended use. There is a lot of great info about supreme rebuilds on AudioKarma. The user hopjon created a pretty extensive parts list. If you can build a dim bulb tester so would do firsts power on with that at the very least.
