I've been natural for 10 years and while I find my shrunken hair cute, the breakage from tangles causes setbacks, so I stick to lightly stretched styles like braid outs (no gels or creams, just leave in). I'll wear a wig to work for a couple months but most times it's my natural hair. The main reason I wear wigs is actually to experiment with different colours and styles to then recreate with my natural hair (minimise damage), but I'll also wear wigs if I want a short break from my hair. Sweeping generalisations about BW reasons for how they wear their hair can be extremely damaging, and caution should be used when sharing opinions

This is getting so exhausting. Why is this a big deal?
Sidenote: The thing about wearing “shrinkage” properly is you have to wash your hair often and keep it moisturized for it to not form tangles and breakage.
But, CAN PEOPLE STAY OUT OF BLACK WOMEN’S HAIR????
Every woman changing their look = having fun.
Black women changing their look = self hating.

I have hip length 4z hair and I'm 32 years old. I been frequenting the TH-cam natural hair community for about 10 plus years now. All I can say is keeping my hair in twists help me retain my length which is my goal. I washed my hair in twists and style it in twists. Shot, even the native women of Chad keep their hair stretched. African tribes manipulate their hair too and they are the most "natural."
I have been stuck at hip length for two years now and my goal is to eventually have all of my hair touching the top of my thighs. I recently started blowing drying my hair (years of no heat) because I realized that I get way less tangles! And the couple of months I have been doing it, I believe my hair is growing passed my hip :)
Different strokes for different folks. Do what works for you 💕

I am a HUGE fan of a blow dried flat twist out. I love the versatile looks that natural hair can give. In the summer 🌞, it's ALL heatless styles. I love my hair in all styles and states.

I love my hair shrunken but when it’s time to detangle it takes a while I think we can appreciate all the versatility of our hair

The thing for me is I literally can’t wear my hair in it’s shrunken state. When I do, it creates so many tangles and honestly a lot of breakage 😬
If folks can do this, then good for them! But it doesn’t work for my hair type.
I’ve got type 4 hair with different patterns but even with gel, my hair still ends up having a ton of single strand knots, etc. I HAVE to keep my hair stretched for my own good. Everyone should do what they want tbh and what’s easiest for them! I can’t wait for the day the natural hair community stops with all these guidelines and rules 🙄

I don't like how short my hair looks in its shrunken state, and it is what it is lol. Like women with looser textures literally fry their hair everyday to be bone straight but I have to be OK with a shruken fro? There is no right or wrong way to "wear natural hair" as long as you don't have a relaxer anything goes.

Considering how easily my hair gets tangled, and how sensitive my scalp is (it will bleed if I pull too hard) I need to keep my hair in a stretched out state. When it was shorter I adored the shrunken look but as its gotten longer keeping it organized keeps my hands out my hair, and my scalp intact.

Just did a Heatless blowout video. As I’m learning my natural hair I have less knots with stretched styles. Also if you look at very old photos of black women, a ton of them stretched hair with threads 😊

I rock both shrunkrn and stretched styles but I love a heatless blowout using Jumbo magnetic rollers. Inspired by kimmaytube's "L3 stretch" I get the same results as I do from a blow dryer without the dryness.
Now let me go check this video out. Lol

I absolutely agree and love that you have made a conversation about it.
The “ pushing and arguing and divisions “ …… sometimes (alot)personally I think just the Term “Natural hair/ Natural hair community “ should be retired.I don’t ever hear other ethnicities having to announce their hair whether it’s theirs; or if it they wanted to just change it up ; or if they find a particular style more manageable they just be and use it and live and are not questioned or accused of anything….and it will be nice to just see us Be and be honest and definitely if we wear extensions and things definitely embrace the kinky curly/coils curly gorgeous choices on the markets now

Um...no. My 4a hair is thick and coily. If it strinks, and I leave it that way, then it actually makes my hair worse. Leads to breakage and further damage. It needs a protective style.

for real!!! It’s like every woman in the world is free to change her hair, face, lips, butt, nails, lashes…except for black women. For them it’s having fun. For us, it’s self-hatred. 😅😅😅

    Everything counts as self-hate nowadays.
I hate that every hairstyle counts as self-hate in the natural hair community.
I just wish that we could just wake up and realize that not every hairstyle counts as self-hate.
It's so bad that it's to the point where we think that nearly every NATURAL HAIRSTYLES counts as wanting to look white.
For god sake! I understand that there are a number of black people who do hate their race, or want to not look black, but that's not always the case! I wish that we could just wake up and see that.
It used to be, "If you straighten your hair, or dye your hair blond, then you want to look white."
But now it's far from that! 😟
I just don't get how it ended up this bad! Almost every hairstyle counts as self-hate! Why are we destroying ourselves?! ☹
    WE ARE DESTROYING OURSELVES! 😱
We think EVERYTHING is black hatred!! 😡
    WHY?! 😢

I been Natural for so long that I don’t even like the way I look with straight or body wave hair….. but with that being said natur textured wigs are always the most expensive that’s just something that I’ve noticed and the cheaper ones aren’t that cheap but the quality definitely is

I wore my hair in locs with my natural hair, wash and go, twist, twist out , braids, Afro , braids with and with extension . I can’t wear a shrunken Afro without massive breakage . So telling people you can only wear your hair only one way is like society liking just straight hair. I get if it’s your choice to wear a shrunken Afro and we should celebrate ever way black woman can wear their hair . Even straight if she chooses . I just don’t want to be put in a box

I've been wearing crochet hair that looks 3c 3b ish
I noticed that I hated having my hair out because it would not give me the volume, the curls, or the flexibility. I had to cut that out. Right now, I'm on an extension detox for the next couple of months to reconnect with my own hair

I have long 4a mid back length natural hair that shrinks right above my shoulders. I wear braid outs because if I left my hair in it’s shrunken state, I would get a lot of tangles and single strand knots. I don’t do it to make it look like a “ different texture “. I do it to prevent breakage.

Even people with straight hair, don’t just wake up and go most of the time. They still have to brush their hair everyday.

My hair could never do shrunken state. My single knots have single knots. Lol there are women who have done the education and come up with books on how to maintain natural hair. All over a sudden what? They lied? From experience and on a personal level, I can't not stretch my hair. Sorry.

Like are we all suppose to wear afros and not stretch/twist/braid it out? 🤔That means we are conforming to a one style that is best to "represent us" which to me is silly. I love my afro but greasing my scalp is harder to do so wearing it in twists makes life easier. My hair is so much longer then when I teen and Ive been "natural" all my life. Stretching our hair doesn't mean we're trying to assimilate and be accepted. I'm not waiting to be accepted life is too short. Why does it feel like we have to conform to some image? 😮‍💨 If influencers refuse to show their hair in its shrunken state then they can its their hair. Influencers are humans with insecurities too. Just watch influencers that show shrunken hair no biggie. I'm so happy women are moving away from relaxers! We are learning to love our hair!! ♥🖤♥

I am African, braiding hair and styling is normal hair, always has been for centuries, long or short, We been doing it... I have done the 4c represent leave it as is thing before because out of retaliation cause people are mean towards 4c, but honestly they were sleeping peacefully at night while I was Being hella pro Bantu... Yes having 4c hair is is the Negro of the Negroest texture and the media has made sure people with that hair are not glamorized unless they are light light or have facial features associated with a whiteness like whatever man, just enjoy the versatility and don't police people and do what works for you... A standard has been set, you can't undo centuries of racist work in one lifetime without a minimum of a 50 to 100-year plan... If you don't want to do too much find a hairstyle that works and just roll with it, a lot of straight haired people barely change their hair, boring neh? You are blessed just do not dwell on the things you can't change, and enjoy the fact that you can control them.

I don't like my hair shrunken up. And what about it? 🤷🏾‍♀️ I feel like that's a valid feeling to have. Black women can have plenty of hair but it stills look like our hair can't grow because of shrinkage. Shrinkage is the devil
