    I love that you are dedicated to re-using material from thrifted shirts to make such beautiful quilts! I'm wanting to start collecting a stash of shirts to do the same. (I also love your sense of humor!)

    I've been at the thrift store this week looking for silk men's ties. I found 86 of them. I'm in the process of washing them and then will take them apart, interface them with lightweight interfacing and then I'll create blocks. I hope to make a throw size quilt.

    Derwent makes a wonderful ink product called inktense. It is made for fabric, heat set permanent. It has blocks and pencils. It is water soluble and acts like water color paint before it is heat set. It is wonderful if you are😮 wanting to get a permanent ( after heat set) design on fabric.

      @@mambakind Used to follow Hunter years ago -- lotta drama. CatBird Quilts, however, has really broken down the art of working with shirts; hence, "shirtologist" seemed fitting. I struggle putting colours and different fabric patterns together so found this video really useful. When you turned the blocks over I couldn't help but notice how beautifully neat and pressed the backs of them were. Do you always press the seams open? Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh my goodness, thank you! 🥰
      And no, I actually don’t usually press seams open (I love a nested seam so I usu press to the side!😍) but because the half-square triangles all meet at the corner, the pattern called for pressing open so the corners would lie more flat and not have that “bump.” Which I actually just learned from my friend/quilting mentor, Jennifer. ☺️
      Great question! And thanks for the compliment!❤️

  • @kathyterrell1547
    @kathyterrell1547 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow, can't imagine the hours finding colors and patterns. I appreciate it, but know I would never have the perseverance to accomplish the end result. I tend to go with precuts, which I know some think are the lazy way to go, but it works for me. Just love the way you described what was used and why each block was made. I have a friend who thinks this very detail oriented way.

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t think precuts are lazy; I do think that choosing colors/fabrics/patterns can be overwhelming for some people, whereas some of us love that part of the process! Which is the beauty of quilting, honestly. I don’t mind cutting but I actively dislike basting. Other people hate cutting! I try to stretch myself in the areas I dislike…maybe you will be challenged to take on a new project with a limited color palette (like 2 or 3 colors tops!) which eliminates some of the stress of selecting so many colors/fabrics. Just a thought. 👍🏻
      And thank you for your comment and kind words! ❤️

    Another home run , Cathy! Love the candy counter imagery, All of a sudden I need some Chicklets! I imagine the old country store where the School Bus stopped (Teaberry gum for me, and fire balls!) I really like that you used a permanent fabric marker to add art to plain triangles! I guess you use a Pigma Micron pen? I use mine on quilt labels (and to sign my "AJax" on my watercolor cards!). I made each of my 5 kids T-shirt quilts around their HS graduations. I saved all of their favorite T-shirts through multiple moves! It paid off because they cherish their quilts. My youngest daughter helps me with color combos.😍

      It is such a great pattern! I, too, am always in a hurry. I think that’s part of why quilting appeals to me: it forces me to slow down and take one step at a time. When I rush, I mess up and have to seam reap my hard work, so it reinforces taking the time to slow down and do it right the first time. ❤️

      Oh thank you, Sherry! 🥰 We put a link in the video description for the markers I used if you want to try them out! I will definitely do a video on this quilt when it’s finished! 😊👍🏻 if you follow me on FB or Instagram, you will see lots of “in -process” photos of this quilt and my other projects!
      Thank you for watching and for your comment! ❤️

    This quilt will be lovely when it's all done, I'm certain your daughter will treasure it always. What size squares do your HST make when they're put together? I think they're 3" but I'm just guessing. Happy sewing! I'm gathering scraps,, cuffs, facing from collars, maybe part of a sleeve in many colors to make a postage stamp quilt. Each square will measure 1" each. I'm thinking big on this project, maybe queen sized for the guest bedroom or if we use it on our bed I'd have to make a king sized. I'll probably sew this in between other projects, preferably using a leader and ender system. I'd appreciate your opinion, should I include shirting that reads white from a distance or should I use pure white squares from the "candy store" or use shirts? Great video as always, Cathy.

      Thank you, Sharon! ❤️
      The HST’s are actually 4” when trimmed. The blocks are 14” completed.
      I’m excited for your postage stamp quilt! That is going to be stunning! As for low volume, or pure white, I vote pure white! I think with that small of piecing, and the variety that you will no doubt have, a pure white will anchor the colored pieces and give it an artistic cohesiveness. It’s gonna be beautiful!!
      And thanks for your comment! ❤️

    Hmmm…..is that blouse you’re wearing 100% cotton? I’m thinking it would look great in a quilt…

      Lol! Right?!? I literally bought it to be quilting fabric, got it home and thought, actually I think this might fit me, put it on and loved it.
      Ta-da! New addition to my wardrobe! 😍🤩
      I will admit, I still look at it and think, “you know, I COULD still cut it up and use it…” 😂😂😂

    Recently I saw a man wearing a nice dress shirt and thought to myself, that would make a nice quilt. My next thought was, if he knew I was thinking this he would be creeped out.

      And yes, I felt the same about increasing my vocabulary! As you may have noticed, I LOVE words. 😉😂😊

    Do you wash quilting cotton since the shirts have been washed?

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t. 😊 So far I haven’t had any issues with shrinkage, either, which is surprising but definitely a relief. 🤣👍🏻😉

    Do you use only 100% cotton shirts or do you also use cotton/poly blends?

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I primarily use 100% cotton shirts (all of the ones in this quilt are cotton) but occasionally I find one that I like that is a poly blend and I get it. I usually regret it though because they’re just harder to work with!
      I have a video that talks about this in depth if you want to check it out!
