$26,000 for a hybrid full size SUV with 450 horse power and 450 pound feet of torque, getting 40mpg, and which has a 100 mile electric only range. Do you have any idea what garbage cars and ridiculous prices america has for cars today? Government regulators might be robbing the american consumer, but I assure you, if this went on sale tomorrow at this price in the USA, it would be the number one selling car on earth in a couple of months. In G-d I trust.
Actually I think that car of the year is well deserved. It offers tremendous value for most practical drivers. It is priced around $30k, yet it has 240 km EV range, 1500 km combined range, 0 to 100 in 3.8 s, intelligent electromagnetic suspension that scans the road to adjust in real time, 7 air bags, FSD capability. And all amenities you can think of.

I agree as it's a reasonably large and frugal family AWD with sand and snow and ice capability so that's broad appeal for those who can't be bothered queuing with the hoi polloi at public chargers.
China has the biggest automotive market in the world so I suppose that makes this car World Car of the Year. As an Australian I like the range extender design because it combines elecric driving 90% of the time with freedom from range anxiety. I could charge the battery and fill the tank in Perth and drive to Geraldton or Kalgoorlie without recharging. A Melbourne resident could drive to Sydney with possibly one refuelling stop, no recharging delays. Yet in the city all the driving is on cheap, fume-free electricity. A good compromise.
As a Russian EVs are not the answer. Unless they use Lead Acid batteries which do not get destroyed at -40 degrees.
@@MiltiadisXmaneven in most populated area in Russia you don’t have too many days under -20C. If you live in a place with -40C as a norm, maybe you need to think about moving to a warmer place before buying a car.
I think it makes a lot of senses. The winner is something practical, and cheap not some shining useless stats cars.

This. I think western reviewers are so focused on best being "highest spec" as opposed to "best value" which takes different factors into consideration.
In 2019 the jaguar i pace won car of the year, so I've never given much credence to any of these awards since.

I agree with your assessment. Those are rather surprising results and I am not sure if I agreed with any of the distinctions. I have been to China about 4 times in the last 18 months with another trip planned for March. I'll be looking out for these prize winners. Thanks.

I've actually been in the Exceed ET before. Its one of my two choices but ended up going with the Luxeed R7 from Huawei, which is basically sister cars (both made by Chery) but with the superior Huawei ADS.
That Chery car is cheap and really comfortable, sits 5 no problem and even a 4 wheel drive version is cheaper than the base Luxeed model.
That said, its been selling woefully in China (less than 2k a month). Its a great car don't get me wrong, but i'm surprised it too. won.
Im Chinese and none of my friends even knew about these awards. So confusing too because if you look at all the car hype in places like Wechat channel, Rednote or Bilibili, all the hype has been around all the nee Huawei cooperation cars like Luxeed, Avatr, and Aito. When its MPV talk its always between Xpeng X9, Zeekr 009 and Li Auto Mega... The Roewe doesnt even register. Id put that far behind in terms of influence than the Denza D9 and Voyah Dream or even the new Geely MPV.
The oddest has to be their Sedan of the year... Its so bad compared to Luxeed, Avatr, IM or Zeekr.
And how did none of the Yangwang models make it into any awards?
I am definitely going to have to see this on Bilibili and see all the Chinese commends about these awards 😂

A vehicle of this size and mass with only 5.9L/100km. is exceptional.
I am not aware of any large Petrol or Diesel SUV in the 2 MT+ stable that has fuel economy so low.
Range extension generator makes perfect sense for rural areas where grid charging is far from acceptable and I am guessing it will provide V2X so can add Home power load in Blackouts and most likely for powering tools, laptops and other appliances.
Is it the best? what were the criterial and cost?

SAIC is a state owned company, and you better believe the Comrades in charge want their vehicles rated highly. America isn't much better at picking "car of the year"; here in the USA it boils down to who paid the most for junkets for the press.. and who advertised the most in the magazines.

There may be a mashup of the EV list and ICE list together. That list sounds like the ICE and EVs got mixed and didn't mention it. Or lack of separating the difference in English? They probably termed it differently in Chinese and there was lost in translation on which is which.

Certainly seems like some of the awards may have been bought, but how would we ever know unless someone says something? It seems like perhaps the dealer association was trying to highlight some less-popular brands. There is something to be said about "best" versus consumer preference, but I'd expect to see the Li Mega or X-Peng MPV 9 get something.
It doesn't matter. The real winner is the one who sold most of cars and made most of profits. 😂
Perhaps you need to apply sales figures to each of these cars. Then it would be known the level of agreement by the Chinese people!
Range extender EV are popular because Chinese love to have fridge tv and sofa on wheels, but cars that have all 3 are usually aerodynamic bricks, hence to keep EV drivetrain range extenders are the solution. Li autos sales success are a testament to this.
If it is Zeekr or Xpeng, I think you won't shock at all.

If you see winners they needed to advertise cause the cars aren't selling. The ones that sell don't bother paying for these shows. Every other vehicle in it's class has one so you would see multiple winners of the best car of that year in half a dozen awards shows. It's all marketing and the reason most people pay no mind to any of it.

We spent some time going to different dealerships looking at different brands and we did visit Chery but found nothing of interest. We didn't even see this car, or anything else of interest, nor are there many on the roads in China. This sounds like a good car but this seems an odd choice with all the incredible choices from Xpeng, the many Huawei cars, etc. Looking at the whole list, you wonder if certain interest groups are influencing these awards? Why so many from Chery?
Yes, the list is weird, they do not consider this EV's superior to range extender vehicles. Yes I missed Zeekr 7x, Xpeng Mona or 7+, Nio ET9? strange.
China"s car of the year is for CHINA and Chinese citizens and not countries outside it .

Just shows your perceptions are very different. You eat with a fork and knife and expect everyone to do the same. The Chinese eats with a pair of chop sticks.
I think the point is that it's the CAR of the year awards, not the ELECTRIC CAR of the year awards, Sam. I think your Xpeng is an amazing vehicle, as are the incoming Zeekr models and the many of the other offerings from the Geely group. But, EVs are just one kind of vehicle, and they're definitely not the answer for everyone.
People want cheap second hand cars that's why in the UK there finding it hard to keep up with demand .....who wants to be saddled with expensive PCP or finance as long as it runs thats a far better option!
6:18 it seems all the category winner for chinese cars were ev or range extenders, whereas all legacy makers' were ice cars. At least no stupid hybrids

I have never heard of it but I am not an expert. I have been visiting a lot of malls here in China and have never seen one. Granted I am only looking at brands available in MX where I am living currently. BTW, the Zeekers are amazing. I may have to get one although for the last 7 years I have not needed one because where I live is all walk-able and I have a scooter if I need to go a little further. That Chery iCar is probably the best one for MX with all the small parking spots and bad roads and it's really affordable.

I love China in general, but have to say such events are heavily corrupt, usually. There's little incentive for organizers to be objective rather than give awards to the highest bidders.
I agree. What happened to the NIO ET9 let alone the NIO ES8. Zeekr X7 new 001 and the little Zeekr SUV. This list is ridiculous.

The european car of the year is more or less unbiased, I mean the organization only accepts contribution from the kournalists. The cars are still coming from the brands, but sometimes brands refuse so they have to fetch one one way or another. I don't know how the Chinese system works.

So if someone disagrees with your opinion about cars and thinks something else, you think that he is paid for it. The same can be said for people who promote certain brands on TH-cam, saying that they are better than others. After all, it is common knowledge that the big car manufacturers pay billions for advertisements, including those on TH-cam.

I don't agree, BYD Seagull should have gotten the award on price and value for money.
With all the excellent choices how does one choose? But this vehicle looks fine, but extremely difficult to find on the internet. I had to go to a Russian site for decent pics and analysis. Interior is brilliant, but vehicle is a little slow. Exterior is also well done. Size is generous. And range is exceptional being a plug in hybrid. But China may want to consider best vehicle awards in price increments next time, otherwise there may be rioting in the streets. Or at least on the Electric Viking channel.

you just exposed your own EV lunacy. Real world winner would be an EV with petrol generators for longer trips. Most people do not bother and buy what works for them best - petrol or diesel. Walk out in the street and talk to real people :)

The e-Power Qashqai gets 5.2 L/100km (real world 5.4 to 5.8) so the prize should have gone to Nissan.

Yeah, don’t jump for joy yet. The Nissan Sylphy was the top selling ICE in China last year and that finished in 8th place. EVs out sold PHEVs by a factor of 7:4. There was a surge in PHEV sales but there doesn’t seem to be any explanation for it in anything I’ve read.
@@thethirdman225 PHEV is still ICE and its growing world wide. Not a PHEV fan, but it's growth suggests to me that BEV still doesn't give a lot of people what they need or want.

PHEV is two vehicles in one. They can be driven as ICE or electric. They are not one or the other and fit the definition of both.

Car of the year means absolutely nothing, think back to previous winners in Aus( Leyland P76, Holden Camira). Fuel economy of 5.9 per 100 isnt anything good, my 17 year old Civic does 5.6 per 100.

Hahahahaha there is also in China a conservative group of car producers/ dealers which represent the past: positive about Western ICE car brands, positive of outdated imitations of Western models, choosing a hybrid, classic model of Chery (the Chinese seller of ICE) as their favorite. SHOWS AGAIN HOW IMPORTANT THE STATE INCENTIVES ARE FOR THE TRANSITION TOWARDS EV'S.

I have no evidence to back this up, but I suspect that cars that are made by Chinese State-Owned companies are favored in these awards.
