I’ve deconstructed from Christianity about a year and a half ago, my wife is from a Catholic family, we have a 2.5 year-old daughter, everything. I worried about how my wife would react to my atheism, and I was concerned about getting our daughter baptized. For me, when topics in this area would come up I was honest with my wife and we’ve had long conversations discussing belief and reason. Thankfully she has been very understanding and encouraging of me to think through my beliefs, even though she’s not at the same point in her journey. Neither of us want to have our daughter baptized as it should be her choice, and we’ve been dreading the push toward it from our religious mothers. But when they do push us we’ll say we want our daughter to be able to decide for herself. I hope your conversations with your wife go well and I encourage you to take it slow as you have, as it sounds like your wife would be understanding as mine is. Yes. God had to cleanse the DNA of humanity from having been corrupted by FALLEN ANGEL DNA. Also, mankind had become extremely evil. Does God have the authority to play God? I can relate to Bill. We moved from Los Angeles to a part of the country that is considered in the Bible Belt. Our son who is in second grade, came home last week to tell us a classmate told him the he was going to “burn in a lake of fire if you don’t believe in god!” Of course we assured him that wasn’t going to happen. And we just suggested to him to ask questions like ‘where is this lake of fire?’

I agree, someone should be mostly educated about something before they draw a conclusion about it. However, the atheist does the same thing when they talk about the supernatural in light of known fictions with the counterintuitive arguments that they're neutral about the existence of it. I don't agree with the notion that most people are capable of knowing what they actually believe, because the vast majority of the public are intentionally dumbed down and ignorant about the world with respect to their knowledge about careers and hobbies or mindless entertainment.

It would be amazing if people who claim to believe in God would answer honestly and say they want to believe because they are afraid of true death. Because that's the core driving force for believing, people who want to believe in "God" of the bible do so because they want to go to heaven; because they can't accept that their family members have died and they'll never see them again; because they can't comprehend not existing, so they try to deny the possibility of such an outcome. In essence, the human ego exposed to biblical teachings becomes inflated, they think that they're important in the grander scheme of things ( "Jesus Christ died for your sins because you're just that gosh darn important!" ) , when the human is simply a creature that knows it's alive.

To the guy who deconverted recently and is worried about telling his wife, I've been in that situation personally. My husband was raised Catholic and I was raised on the border of fundamental evangelicalism. I was far more devout, but he always identified himself to me as a non-denominational Christian. We raised our kids in mostly Methodist, Lutheran, and non-denominational churches when they were little, but never baptized them, and our attendance tapered off drastically when they were in elementary school. Anyway, it took me over a decade to fully deconstruct and I kept quiet about it. One day a switch just flipped and I stopped believing in God just over a year ago. I was nervous to tell him, but I had to get it off my chest almost immediately. It turned out that he was never a Christian, but had always been agnostic. He lied to me about it for over 20 years, because he knew that I was so devout that I would choose God over him. He's pretty apathetic towards it all, and didn't care if our kids were raised in church or not. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out that the caller's wife is fully a cultural Catholic only, and is actually agnostic.
Love the response from Dave about allowing the wife to baptize the child for now. That's the calm way to go about it. I know for a fact that we feel a bit more aggressive as we convert out of religion. It takes time to get away from the anger due to pushing it all internal. Amazing advice. Great show. Hello DH, I'm Fasil. Whenever I interact with religious people I approach the conversation openly. And the vast majority of those interactions are initiated by those people, usually in the form of a knock on my front door. I hate being wrong, but I truly love finding out I'm wrong about something, because then I can stop being wrong. People like Rick and the 7 day cycle fool have turned off the part of their brains that allows them to consider ideas that are contradictory to what they already believe.
A couple of times in the Greg conversation it was suggested that belief is a choice. Greg believes in some sort of creator/moral god, and only learning more about the real world will convince him otherwise.

Message for Bill, although I'm watching this 4 months late. I was baptised as a child, I'm also a Godfather to 2 children. I went to a Church of England School, I had to go to church once a week with School and I went to Sunday School every week for years, but I have never being religious or believed in any God a single day in my life
To Bill (excellent conversation by the hosts, btw): I grew up baptized and going to Catholic mass a lot, had my first communion and confirmation with the attached instructions (sort of temporary catholic catechism instructions plus easy-read Bible studies). At about the same time I had to take the confirmation class, I read a popular German account of ancient Greek myths about other gods and semi-gods and especially completely different creation stories (I grew up in Germany). That sent me into questioning the validity of all ancient stories - they were conceived in similar timeframes in different geographical areas, and they couldn't all be right at the same time, could they? Later I realized that the Biblical stories lacked consistency and really were all over the place and had less poetic power than the Greek ones, and what would you think, I was a full-blown unbeliever at 15 or 16 or so. Let your little one be baptized and give her lots of books to read, talk to her about it, and wait for the inevitable.
Most of the time, the non religious parent’s viewpoint on religion - lack of religious belief, trumps the religious parent’s, especially if the religious belief is extreme and stifling. Logic and common sense explanations with good evidence backing it tend to better grasped onto than confused contradictory fantasy.

I think the fundamental difference between Greg and Forrest/Dave is that Greg begins with an assumption to fill in the gaps of the knowledge not currently available to us, while Forrest accepts the gaps until more answers are discovered, and actively works to find those answers. Both sides are at least open to the possibility of a god but it’s the classic scenario of the theist assuming belief and looking for evidence to support that belief while the atheist begins with a lack of belief and follows the evidence where it leads.
The easiest task on the planet must be co-hosting on an evolution call during an episode with Forrest.

I’ve deconstructed from Christianity about a year and a half ago, my wife is from a Catholic family, we have a 2.5 year-old daughter, everything. I worried about how my wife would react to my atheism, and I was concerned about getting our daughter baptized. For me, when topics in this area would come up I was honest with my wife and we’ve had long conversations discussing belief and reason. Thankfully she has been very understanding and encouraging of me to think through my beliefs, even though she’s not at the same point in her journey. Neither of us want to have our daughter baptized as it should be her choice, and we’ve been dreading the push toward it from our religious mothers. But when they do push us we’ll say we want our daughter to be able to decide for herself. I hope your conversations with your wife go well and I encourage you to take it slow as you have, as it sounds like your wife would be understanding as mine is.

I agree, someone should be mostly educated about something before they draw a conclusion about it. However, the atheist does the same thing when they talk about the supernatural in light of known fictions with the counterintuitive arguments that they're neutral about the existence of it. I don't agree with the notion that most people are capable of knowing what they actually believe, because the vast majority of the public are intentionally dumbed down and ignorant about the world with respect to their knowledge about careers and hobbies or mindless entertainment.

It would be amazing if people who claim to believe in God would answer honestly and say they want to believe because they are afraid of true death. Because that's the core driving force for believing, people who want to believe in "God" of the bible do so because they want to go to heaven; because they can't accept that their family members have died and they'll never see them again; because they can't comprehend not existing, so they try to deny the possibility of such an outcome.
In essence, the human ego exposed to biblical teachings becomes inflated, they think that they're important in the grander scheme of things ( "Jesus Christ died for your sins because you're just that gosh darn important!" ) , when the human is simply a creature that knows it's alive.

To the guy who deconverted recently and is worried about telling his wife, I've been in that situation personally. My husband was raised Catholic and I was raised on the border of fundamental evangelicalism. I was far more devout, but he always identified himself to me as a non-denominational Christian. We raised our kids in mostly Methodist, Lutheran, and non-denominational churches when they were little, but never baptized them, and our attendance tapered off drastically when they were in elementary school. Anyway, it took me over a decade to fully deconstruct and I kept quiet about it. One day a switch just flipped and I stopped believing in God just over a year ago. I was nervous to tell him, but I had to get it off my chest almost immediately. It turned out that he was never a Christian, but had always been agnostic. He lied to me about it for over 20 years, because he knew that I was so devout that I would choose God over him. He's pretty apathetic towards it all, and didn't care if our kids were raised in church or not. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out that the caller's wife is fully a cultural Catholic only, and is actually agnostic.

Love the response from Dave about allowing the wife to baptize the child for now. That's the calm way to go about it. I know for a fact that we feel a bit more aggressive as we convert out of religion. It takes time to get away from the anger due to pushing it all internal. Amazing advice. Great show. Hello DH, I'm Fasil. Whenever I interact with religious people I approach the conversation openly. And the vast majority of those interactions are initiated by those people, usually in the form of a knock on my front door. I hate being wrong, but I truly love finding out I'm wrong about something, because then I can stop being wrong. People like Rick and the 7 day cycle fool have turned off the part of their brains that allows them to consider ideas that are contradictory to what they already believe.
A couple of times in the Greg conversation it was suggested that belief is a choice. Greg believes in some sort of creator/moral god, and only learning more about the real world will convince him otherwise.
The last guy acted like the typical Christian apologist - first claimed that he knew the Bible better, and then when he was proven wrong - tried to change the meaning of the passage, then when he realized that wasn’t going to work- he starts laughing in a high pitched voice. To Bill (excellent conversation by the hosts, btw): I grew up baptized and going to Catholic mass a lot, had my first communion and confirmation with the attached instructions (sort of temporary catholic catechism instructions plus easy-read Bible studies). At about the same time I had to take the confirmation class, I read a popular German account of ancient Greek myths about other gods and semi-gods and especially completely different creation stories (I grew up in Germany). That sent me into questioning the validity of all ancient stories - they were conceived in similar timeframes in different geographical areas, and they couldn't all be right at the same time, could they? Later I realized that the Biblical stories lacked consistency and really were all over the place and had less poetic power than the Greek ones, and what would you think, I was a full-blown unbeliever at 15 or 16 or so. Let your little one be baptized and give her lots of books to read, talk to her about it, and wait for the inevitable.

Most of the time, the non religious parent’s viewpoint on religion - lack of religious belief, trumps the religious parent’s, especially if the religious belief is extreme and stifling. Just the opposite - it progresses into disorder until destroyed. Now let's start even before this stage: Where did the egg come from? From NOTHING? There has to be a cause for anything that comes into existence. But lets's take your IMPOSSIBLE "first cell" theory. How did it form? What MIND managed it's composition? Where did the DNA blueprints for 10 million DIFFERENT species come from? From a mud puddle? A warm pond, perhaps? We got mud puddles everywhere. Same for warm ponds. And you know what? None of them are creating new life. Not one. Yet NONE of your asinine atheist causes have the INTELLIGENCE, POWER, PURPOSE or MEANS to create/design anything PERIOD. So your Godless desperation is clearly observed here. But back to the first cell, how did it create a system within itself to absorb sunlight? Without that system to absorb sunlight, it does not matter whether it exists in an "open or closed system." So yeah...........until you give a RATIONAL POSSIBLE explanation for how a single cell formed from NOTHING and without a MIND and was able to eat, digest food, eliminate waste, move, breath and reproduce and then formed within itself a system to absorb sunlight, you have a stupid person having faith on the utterly IMPOSSIBLE. And your argument dies right there. That's it and that's all. You're done. Your playhouse just burnt to the ground, without a will or living trust :)

I think the fundamental difference between Greg and Forrest/Dave is that Greg begins with an assumption to fill in the gaps of the knowledge not currently available to us, while Forrest accepts the gaps until more answers are discovered, and actively works to find those answers. Both sides are at least open to the possibility of a god but it’s the classic scenario of the theist assuming belief and looking for evidence to support that belief while the atheist begins with a lack of belief and follows the evidence where it leads.
