This video was published last month. Unfortunately I ran into a copyright issue with a photo I used. I had permission to use it but the person I asked didn't actually own it. Anyways...here it is again. Please leave your batting questions in the comments.
Thank you, Karen, for clearing the confusion about batting-its kinds, costs, strengths and weaknesses. I now hope to make better decisions when I buy batting.
Hello Karen, I am new to quilting, and I enjoy you videos and they are very helpful and I realize there is so much to learn but I like how you make it simple. Keep up the great work. God Bless
Thank you for another informative video. Have you considered testing the difference between the Heat and Bond adhesive and lightweight, fusible interfacing to attach scrap batting? That might be an interesting video. Thanks
Id like to know if batting really comes in different weights and how to find it. For example, an 80/20 cotton polyester; does it come in different weights? I like it but find that I often double layer it because I want it heavier.
Long time quilter here, I've purchased from Kawartha before, good value. I like 80/20 for all my quilts. Newbies, stay away from all poly and re-wash fabric especially reds, dark blues and blacks.
For many years I have been using flannel as my batting. It holds up extremely well and I can hand quilt as close or as far apart as I want with no problems. The quilts are more flat with this as the filler but are nice and warm. What are your thoughts on flannel?
I make enough charity quilts that i buy 20/80 by the roll. Always when it's on sale. i use about 2 rolls a year. Most of my material is donated, the cost ( and my time) is my donation.
I usually use an 80/20 batting, like Warm and Natural. I think we should use the best batting and thread when we make a quilt. It takes time to make a nice quilt so why use cheaper products to put it together. My motto is use good quality products for the things I make.
Thank you for this interesting vidéo and all the information that you share. These matrasses look amazing too bad that we cannot purchase them in Belgium. Happy Holyday Season to you and family ❤
Thank you for the information about batting, I will be sure to watch the follow up. My question is not batting related though, I would like to know the name of the quilt pattern behind you, please.
I just had aquilt longarm and I want it little bit fluffier then 80/20, she didnt carry it and said she couldnt get it ,but thought she could find some arround, luckily she did,.You used to be able to get it in different lofts, like 1/4, 1/2 inch etc. Apparently not any more, ugh.
My comment is how do you know what type to use if you're using mixed mediums? I've become fond of making a cotton quilt top with a fleece or minky backing. I've used cotton-poly blend batting since that's what I had, but I recently ran out and will be using 100% cotton batting in this next quilt with a cotton pieced top and fleece backing. I just wonder how the different materials play off each other. Thank you!
Hello, I have recently purchased Hobbs 80/20 black batting. The quality was awful. It was extremely thin and had glue throughout. I contacted the manufacturer and put in a quality claim.. they sent me another package, equally thin. I have done my own research and I am finding that many of the batting manufacturers have changed how thick the batting is. I usually use all cotton. Now my quilts seem to be very thin and much less cozy than they used to.. any recommendations from anyone on better quality batting? I am thinking of using polyester just to get a bit of loft.
My question is does it matter which side is against the top of the quilt and which is against the back. . Mainly for machine quilting on a demotic sewing machine.
Hi Karen. My question is:: I want to try those iron on tapes for my Frankenstein's instead of sewing the pieces together BUT don't they melt the batting? I use poly/cotton and cannot believe it will not melt. What is your opinion and tips for this tape? Thank you
I have made several Frankenbattings using the iron on tapes and have never melted a batting. I do use a press cloth and my batting is usually a poly cotton blend.
My problem is that I have scraps of different types of batting that have wound up getting mixed up together over the years. I have no way of knowing what is what anymore.

Karen what batting do you use for your single roll system. Just curious…
Hi from Fairbanks Alaska! Your videos have been a lifeline for me in my darkest times. I cannot thank you enough ❤
Thank you! I am so glad you find them helpful.🤗🤗🤗
Hand quilter here! Wool is my go to. Great video.
Liked it the first time and was glad for the refresher! Thank you!

I love the crinkle !
This was ever useful. Thank you

Thank you for the kind words. 🤗🤗🤗
Great video!
Do you have any advice on second hand materials that can be used for batting? For example how well does T-shirt cotton do?
Awesome video! Thank you for your research and tips.
Awesome tips on how to save money on the batting
Excellent video. Learned so much from it
Enjoyed this on batting, very informative. Now, we’d like to know, just what is your favorite batting?
Thank you for another informative video. Have you considered testing the difference between the Heat and Bond adhesive and lightweight, fusible interfacing to attach scrap batting? That might be an interesting video. Thanks
I have a whole closet that just batting in it! Luckily, I live alone in a 3 bedroom house. At least I always have what I need! 😂
Hi Karen, is there a “right way up” with batting?
There is on needle punched but it does not make a difference to your results
Thanks great info😊
Very informative. Much needed info for a new quilter like me. Thank you.❤
Great video! I’d love to hear your thoughts on using fleece or flannel for the batting?
Good question. I was thinking that too. Seems like the thin fleece throw blankets might be a good choice. ??
I always prewash my fabric & use polycotton batting hoping that my quilts hold up to washing in their future lives.

I am always surprised that the 80/20 batting is so warm with just one layer. It seems so thin, but it is really warm.
Thank you
Oh my I just stated looking for a heavy or thick . thank yoh MS.KAREN, MERRY HOLIDAYS TO YOU AND YOURS😘🎄🙏

I have just made a couple of baby quilts and flannel and I did like how it worked. Just be sure to prewash the flannel
@@JustGetitDoneQuiltsYep, I prewash all my fabrics

How much does a roll of cotton batting go for and how many quilts have you made from one roll

I agree but Unfortunately not everyone has the money
@@JustGetitDoneQuiltsand for newbies like me...buying the best quality may not be the wisest choice.
Do you have a video on quilt repairs?

How to tell the right side of quilt batting
Cause poly Is made from plastics sadly.
Natural fiber is healthier to sleep in
Kawartha Quilting is fabulous. I wait until they have their $5.00 delivery charge to a town nearby.
Unfortunately they don’t drop off in Toronto
I need to go to Brantford to St Catherines but it is certainly worth it
My Arkansas step-grandma always used newspaper
Interesting

I have the same problem. I want my quilts squishy lol so I use minky or polar fleece as the backing. Hardly matters then what my batting is like. 😊
My question is does it matter which side is against the top of the quilt and which is against the back. . Mainly for machine quilting on a demotic sewing machine.
No. Needle punched batting has a top but it doesn’t make a difference to your final product

@marygersetich8709 thank you for info.
I use parchment paper or press cloth
What great info! Thx so much for posting it!
