This movie holds a special place in my heart. I grew up very poor. My dad was laid off from his job in 2001, and we had to move into this really crappy housing. My parents were ramen-noodles-broke. But, for my 14th birthday, my mom took me to see this movie and even bought me m&m’s and a soda, which was the ultimate, extravagant splurge for us. This movie represents to me a gift that my mom literally picked up coins from the sidewalk and skipped meals to be able to afford.
Wanted to add- the “deadbeat” father and grandmother were due to her selfish mother. 😬 In the movie she says something along the lines of, “I couldn’t take all of the waving and bowing. I’m too free spirited and artistic and we agreed it would be best for you to be fatherless.” Like… what? Maybe figure out you don’t like royalty before committing to it? IDK.

Anne Hathaway really did slip and fall on the bleachers. Also, in The Sound of Music, Julie Andrews really did trip when she was running up to the Von Trapp house. I thought it was funny that they both had real stumbles in movies where they played clumsy characters. :)

In the books the dad was alive and supposed to help her through the tasks of being a princess. But then Disney told the writer that they wanted Julie Andrews to be the grandma….and be the one to help her through the process….and the author was like “ok kill the dad, he must die idec, get me Julie Andrews!” 😂😂😂😂

🙋♀️ As someone who read the books, the answer to why the grandma hasn’t been in the picture is that she was but she was an absolute nightmare. She was mean and awful and not Julie Andrews at all. Also I think Mia’s dad was still alive. The books are a whole different vibe.
Out of interest was this set in a private school, because I noticed some kids in a school uniform which is common in the uk but not so much American schools?
@@littlemy1773 I think they didn’t have uniforms in the books, but I’d have to refresh my memory. I do know that the books took place in New York though, not California like the movie, so that might make a difference. I almost want to say it’s a charter school.

@@littlemy1773 yes it’s a private school that her dad paid tuition for. Which she knew. He paid her tuition and sent her gifts for her birthday every year. She knew he was rich but had no relationship.
He is and he had testicular cancer so he couldn’t have any more heirs which is why they decided to tell Mia about being a princess. Also, “grandmere” as Mia called her in the books was terrible, a drunk, a chain smoker, and just a pain. In order to get JA they had to rewrite the character so Meg Cabot agreed. And for the record, Lily is a butthead in the books AND the movies.
This was fantastic as always but i was really sad that it wasn't like half an hour long. I need more Jamie time 😅

Basically everything surrounding her hair in this movie always drove me crazy - oh right, naturally curly hair is bad so instead of saying "how can we make this look nicer/tame it a bit" WE MUST ELIMINATE THE CURL, CURLS BAD *HISSSSS*. Not to mention, even if you straighten her hair it doesn't magically stay that way, so the expectation now is that she flat irons it every day for the rest of her life or what?
And no hairdresser worth his salt would come near her curly hair with that kind of brush omg 🤦♀️
This movie was one of many during that era that caused massive amounts of bullying towards my naturally curly hair. It almost feels traumatic to remember.
Yeah, in the book they cut her hair really short (and it's not EWWWW-CURLY!!!111 to begin with, just kinda unmanagable), then she tries to grow it out but it is often mentioned it has "sail boat shape" and it is never perfect.
Also, as person wearing glasses the scene of breaking glasses pisses me off.
See, in Big Bang THeory Amy got to keep her glasses when she got make over, just got more stylish ones).
I'll never forget one time a colleague said to me, "Sometimes you look really cute and professional and sometimes you just...don't." And the only possible variables I could think of were sometimes I wore my glasses instead of my contacts and sometimes I left my hair curly instead of spending 45 minutes straightening it. And it must have been the curly hair because I don't see how anyone could say glasses aren't "professional."
Ah yes...I too remember the "horror" of having naturally curly/frizzy hair in the early 00s. After perms being in fashion like a decade earlier 🙄

Okay, but WHY if Mia has naturally curly/frizzy hair does it not become curly/frizzy when it's soaking wet from the rain at the end? This is coming from a curly girl who knows her hair will start to curl if it gets even a little wet. AMERICA EXPLAIN.
Edit: I'm talking about when she's giving the speech where she accepts her role as princess. No blow dryers, no flat irons, no styling whatsoever, and she's standing there with her perfectly straight hair.

Great point about the “dead beat grandma”!! I always think about the same exact thing in the Parent Trap! How are they not bitter and scarred by the fact that one parent was perfectly fine never seeing you again? Still it’s one of my all time favorite movies. We have to look past all that lol
I still watch both movies regularly to this day, but yeah the premise of Parent Trap bothers me. Still love it though. 😂😂

Lmfaoooo true in Parent Trap they’re so unbothered that their parents didn’t care to know the other twin, and also the fact that they can’t tell they’ve switched like they may be identical but I’m sure their mannerisms are so different, especially considering they live in different countries with different slang/lifestyles

I've been going through a tough time losing my dad who was my best friend. I've spent everyday working with him for the past 7 years and after 3 weeks it still seems unreal. Grief is the hardest thing to ever understand for anyone, I’m so sorry you’re going through that. I lost my dad in 2018, & it still feels unreal. It really is so much easier now, but literally the first 2 & a half years were a fucking rollercoaster. But my dad & I spent most of my life not even speaking, I think that made it a little worse. I hope you find ways to let yourself heal, & allow yourself to feel any kind of grief without shame in it (including anger or resentment)
I promise, it really does get a little easier 🖤 it never goes away, it just feels like something you’re more capable of handling

Lost my parents too and am sad you had to lose one that close to you. A lot of people don't realize how big a hole that leaves in us. All the memories and ability to simply reminisce with them is over and to accept that and somehow move on is extremely difficult. Still haven't moved on personally. Still think about them daily. Still feels as if it all just happened yesterday.
Love you as a fellow human who I can relate with- not trying to hit on you lol but love you because that pain is hard and can relate in a huge way. Anything you remember about him WRITE, write it down or speak it into a recorder, do something to keep the memories because you do forget things you wish you didn't eventually.
I am so very sorry. I lost my dad unexpectedly in 2017 and some days it's like I'm just waiting for a call or email; other days, the pain is still raw. I feel for you. Grieve in your own time and way. It will get better, but I don't know that it ever goes away.
Just so you know, my 9yr old watched your Cinderella Story vid with me last night and he's obsessed with you. He thinks you're the funniest person alive and said "This is comedy gold. She deserves a Nobel prize for this" 🤣🤣
My friend and I LOVED this movie. We used to rewind the part where Andrew’s is teaching her princess stuff and walks by the doorway “don’t shlump like this” over and over. 😂😂😂 I don’t know why we thought that was so funny.

The deadbeat thing is because her parents didn't want her to have to be a princess, so they agreed her dad and his family would have no part in her life. It's only after he gets testicular cancer ( books) or dies (movies) and can't have more kids that they're forced to drag her into it .
I hated that they thought she couldn't be pretty with curly hair. I love curly hair and I was jealous of her hair in the beginning of the movie! I thought she was so pretty. Child me was so angry that they straightened it.

Apparently Christy Carlson Romano (Ren Stevens from Even Stevens and also Kim Possible) was set to play in this role, but she lost out to Anne. She made a video about it on her channel. But I could TOTALLY see her nailing this role too.
I think I heard you say in a previous video that “Drop Dead Gorgeous” was on your list to do, but I don’t think you ever did it. You soooo need to do that one! It’s hilarious and has so many popular actresses kinda before they got super popular (Brittany Murphy, Denise Richards, Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adams…)! And the rest of the cast is pretty magical too, especially Allison Janney! It’s seriously one of my favorite movies EVER! My sister and I constantly do the awful Minnesota accent, lol! I really think you’d get a kick out of it bc it’s so freakin ridiculous! And I’d absolutely LOVE to watch the hilarity that would ensue with a video that you made about it, ha ha. I love this movie! It was one of the few “girlie” movies my older brothers would watch with me. We still quote “wash your hands” from the banquet scene regularly. 😂 Please cover Princess Diaries 2 as well!

Anne Hathaway said one of her falls (the one where Lilly is ranting and they are walking on the bleachers while Joe plays basketball) was not scripted; she literally just fell there and that made it more hilarious, especially since they left it in.
She was also a klutz in real life and fell off her chair when she was auditioning. Her falling wasn't always on purpose 🤣
Several years ago I ran into the Princess Diaries book in a thrift store and I bought it. My sister and I used to watch the movie in VHS over and over again 😂
Reading the book was a really pleasant surprise!! I know that it's a cliche already, but the book series is great!! The story is different, Amelia's father is not dead, just a fool with testicle cancer who can't have more children, so that's why Mia has to be princess.
Also, Lily and Mia are very nerd and more relatable and realistic than in the movie.
I really recommend you to read the books if you have the chance ♥️
I loved the princess diaries when I was a young teen, I even owned it on VHS lol 💖 so glad you reviewed this one! I could be wrong but I think her dad died a few months before? But her mom and dad divorced years before and I think he kept in touch long distance. Still doesn't explain why the grandmother didn't know her granddaughter though 🤔
The grandmother didn't approve of Mia's mother because she wasn't royal, and Mia's parents agreed to keep Mia in the dark about her dad being a prince so she could have a normal childhood. That's why grandmother and dad were distant.
I also hate Lilly, Mia talks about her dad dying and she’s like “it’s been 2 months aren’t u over that already.” Like what the actual hell.
Lily IS the true villain. The way she manipulates - ergh.
When mia takes off her hat and the class goes wild is my childhood personified. I have very thick wavy hair and anytime I wore it straight people would always be like 'oh isn't that better? You gonna do it everyday' no Bianca, it literally took two hours and my ears got burnt
You know what always got me about the makeover is, she has curly hair and then when she has the makeover it never reverts back to curley hair when she presumably washes it.
I'm just here to say that Anne Hataway's dimples in the limo reveal is just 🤌🤌🤌 what a BEAUTY

I relate to being a frizzball - they called me Goldilocks on the football team. There were people called truck and chief and then there was me, Goldilocks - keeping the benches nice and warm from the sidelines, but not too warm, just right.

the scene at the beach always upsets me so much . i would be traumatized. i always cried during that scene when i was a kid. i think it was also the fact that ann was supposed to be a kid but all these adults are taking pictures of her without clothes on and it just horrified me
I loved this movie as a kid, however it unfortunately did make me hate my natural hair and I proceeded to destroy it with heat and chemicals for the next 16 years. but alas, I love my hair once more lol

This one had a tea party, and all the princesses came out and said hi ..I say all this to say, she doesn't remember a lot of things from childhood but this is a very fond memory of hers. Thanks to this movie. ❤️

The makeover scene was a critical blow to my confidence as a curly girl lol when she went from freak with curly hair to princess with straight hair I was like “oh okay, cool cool”. Still love this movie though ❤️
I love everything you've ever produced, but my heart belongs to these 90's/early 2000's movie reviews. The epitome of these kinds of movies is Center Stage (2000).
It has everything. Small town girl in the big city, pursuing her dreams, falls for the bad boy while the good boy chases her, her friend tells her mom "it's not my dream mom- it's yours!" There's a montage, and not just a dance sequence- multiple, as the whole movie is about dance students. It was Zoe Saldana's first movie role (right before Crossroads), it features Mandy Moore's "I Wanna Be With You" and it is about DANCING. Great lessons include date the nice guy not the douche, follow your dreams and believe in yourself. There literally could not be a more perfect movie for your reviews.
Fun fact: The guy who played Josh was also the voice of Sid from Toy Story lol

God, this was my roman empire as a teen. I'd read the books and got super excited when the movie came out. Although the author did write into the later books that a movie of her life was made and joked about how they "killed off your dad and made your grandmother all kindly and sympathetic to your plight." For context her grandmother was hilariously cunning in the books, had tattoo'd eyeliner, drank alcohol at breakfast and had a furless, shaky chihuahua.
Haven't watched it yet, already liked it. love this movie, love you. Can't wait to watch this video in a few minutes!

Actually they do explain in the film why grandma wasn't there. Simply, the father didn't want his family to be connected to that world, and a wedge formed in the family.
