Absolutely. He and Emma had more chemistry, for crying out loud! He seemed to treat Harriet like a little sister, if anything. Even what he said reminds me of what you might say to your friend about their younger sibling
Me too! What I really like about Emma is how obvious her flaws are. It greatly amuses me. If Emma wasn't this way, then what would make this story compelling or interesting?
I love how he doesn't stare into the camera the entire time. It makes sense for Emma to be self aware of the camera, but not so much for everyone else.
One thing that defined Emma is her reluctance to leave home. I don't like that they changed that. Emma can be an ambitious young woman and still be a homebody.
I don't see it as Emma being reluctant to leave home - her father was overprotective and never wanted her to leave, and because she loves him, she stays. In fact, I think she yearns to get out and experience more of the world, but since she has to stay home, she might as well amuse herself by matchmaking those around her. And Emma in this adaptation lives at home with her dad in her mid-twenties, so I assume there is some of that going on here as well...
ChocolateIsMyDrug I was just gonna say that. She stops people from talking about the ocean cause she's so jealous at never having seen it. How is she a homebody? Maybe involuntarily. ???
Emma considers herself quite the puppeteer. After watching this, I have to wonder how many people other than Mr. Knightley realise she's pulling the strings. Emma is most definitely not as subtle as she seems to believe.
I love when Emma looks at the side camera. I crack up every time. Also, the way Elton looks at Emma is priceless. You get the vibes way earlier in this series than in the book.
I like that this Mr. Elton is more believable as a romantic interest (for anyone). In most adaptations he's really goofy, awkward, or creepy, and it doesn't make sense why Emma would push him on Harriet. But this Mr. Elton is kind and attractive. Nice move, writers.
(Don't worry--I know he will eventually prove to be a selfish, petty, [insert expletive of choice], but for now, he is the most satisfying adaptation of this character I've seen)
So he's definitely one of the most attractive Eltons ever! Interesting development. Nevertheless, this point in the story arc is severely lacking in Snarky Knightley. I hope he won't be gone for long; I need my weekly fix.
Wow, Elton's tall. Also, celery soda may be one Pemberley Digital food I'm not sure fans will take to! Good intro for Elton; the actor does a good job bringing that air of smooth, honest-yet-untrustworthy frat boy charm to the character. He's also pretty straightforward and self-confident, like Emma. I look forward to seeing and rolling my eyes at how oblivious Emma is to his incompatibility with Harriet. On another note, who else is starting to involuntarily roll their eyes every time Emma says "I am Emma Woodhouse"? Maybe eventually, she'll do an intro where she says some variation on "I am Emma Woodhouse. . . but I'm not sure who that is anymore."
GREAT casting for Elton!! A bit more *subtly* self-important than Book!Elton, but it's still definitely there. Cannot WAIT to watch this storyline play out.
Watching again because of the announcement, and I never realized that Emma always calls Alex either Alex Knightley or Mr. Knightley. I love the throwback to Austen times that I didn't notice before!
I literally squealed when Kirby from (Character) appeared on the screen... And then continued to scream the rest of the episode - great casting choice :D
Juxtaposing Elton against Knightley in everything from tone, appearance, etc. is an excellent and subtle plot device that makes this series unique from the book. Excellent acting from both leading guys! (And Martin, of course, he's adorable)
It's my first time watching this series (I know, I know. But better late then never amirite?) and I'm totally getting a George Wickham kind of vibe from Elton.... Well not so much, but in the sense that he is starting to like Emma already and isn't really interested in Harriet. And I haven't read the book yet so LOL
YES I thought I was the only one! Even if he isn't Wickham-esque, the way he treated Harriet reminds me of how you might treat your friend's little sister. I think he got an "aww she's adorable" vibe from her more than a romantic vibe
Someone down below said that all Emma needs is a southern accent. My instant mental response was "then she would be exactly like Mrs. Bennet... *gasp* oh my lanta, Emma is a younger version of Mrs. Bennet!!!!"
I'm sorry Emma, but Senator Elton is smoother than chocolate syrup and OBVIOUSLY flirting with YOU, the successful, ambitious, genius, and poor Harriet is more nervous than a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. They couldn't be less compatible!
For me, he's more of a mash of up Darcy and Wickham. Debonair and clean-cut like the former, but there are hints of something crafty and off like the latter. Maybe it's because the acting is not up to scratch yet, maybe it's because it's his first time on these videos with Emma, or maybe it's on purpose. We'll just have to see.
I think it would be really amazing if they managed to make us like Mr. Elton. It happened with Lydia, and, as of this episode, I definitely don't hate him.
We are supposed to like him at first. He is describe as "a handsome and agreeable man considered a welcome addition to any social gathering." So, all bets are off. :-) But I agree with you, it would be interesting.
I really like how conversation goes between Emma and Elton (I haven't read the by the way, though I do know of it), and I find it kind of impressive too because I'm the type of person who'd just wilt and get fidgety under the kind of smooth and straightforward (and you have no idea what they are really thinking) talk from people like Elton but Emma just takes it all smoothly (whether she is truly aware of what he is really saying or not) and is super alert with every syllable. It's awesome.
Can we all just take a moment to acknowledge the title of this video? Great obscure Austen reference. I love the production team of this show! Also Elton is seriously perfect for Elton and I am excited.
I actually realize now that Elton in the book wasn't really a jerk, he was just forced by Emma into a situation which he didn't feel satisfied. It was only after Emma rejected him that he grew into a jerk.
But the fact that he DID stop treating her nicely after she didn't give him what he wanted goes to show that he was already a jerk who was just able to pretend to be nice in order to win over her affections. So... yeah, still a jerk.
No.. actually he was a jerk in the book. He was doing the classic "compliment a girl's best friend to get closer to the girl and not the best friend" technique. And then once he realized that Emma wasn't interested in him, but trying to match make him to Harriet, he gets rather insulted. It's pretty clear in the book Mr. Elton is a social climber. After all Emma is the richest young woman in Highbury. He quickly goes off and marries another rich young who is as pretentious as he is. Then they BOTH go out their ways to insult and humiliate Harriet, since they can't directly target Emma.
elew223 Actually, in the book she makes it pretty clear to him that she's trying to set him up with Harriet. He just realized that he was in love with Emma, not Harriet. Once Emma rejects him, then he becomes a jerk.
mustardsfire22 He was never in love with Emma, he was a gold-digger and social climber who set his sights on Emma when she started taking an interest in him - or so he thought. He didn't realise she was trying to set him up with Harriet until he proposed to her, and she NEVER made it clear to him - she did make it pretty obvious to HARRIET, but not Elton.
It's cool to see how passionate she is. She's beautiful and alive. She really does think she's doing the right thing. :( I can see how amazing she'll be once changes her view.
I like Elton and he and Harriet had great chemistry if you consider it's all sort of fake. While, I agree there is nothing wrong with not leaving things to chance if Emma thought this was the best idea, she should have picked something a little more natural and maybe something they actually had in common. I really hope he doesn't suffer from Wickham syndrome though, which I suspect will happen as we are already presented with a goofy adorable Martin and Elton is the one getting in the way of the happiness. Also, Paul Stewart, good choice for Elton. Seems like everyone is teaming up in LA to make the best series for Emma Woodhouse that they can. I hope to see a few more beloved faces too, though.
Harriet and Martin had good chemistry, Harriett's being polite. Emma and Elton though, THEY have good chemistry, very like minded. The actors do a phenomenal job, but I hate Emma's character. Nina, I'm awfully surprised at you defending the manipulation of others for self gain: turning this into a business venture clearly objectifies Harriett.
Cris Kamurai Does it really surprise you? I like Emma because she is a great ideal for a business person, male or female. I like that she does this, because women in business and women in business in the media are told exactly not to be Emma. They are told to make sure that they don't talk over men and to take others seriously and to not manipulate other. I'm not saying that manipulation is a great quality, it's clearly gonna bite her in the ass, but I do think that Emma is important in this way. If she were a man we wouldn't say half the things we do about Emma. That's why I defend her. She's not perfect, but she's what we need for the future.
Ugh, I disagree on all points, and I'd be just as upset by the douchbaggery if it were a man. I thought you would be against objectifying and using people, or at least a woman.
I am annoyed at myself for being so attracted to Elton... And heartbroken that Knightley wasn't in this episode or the preview for Thursday! I like that this show is able to make me feel these things. :-)
Wonder if Emma will keep prefixing James Elton with "State Senator"? Anyway, great casting as always, and Harriet looks super cute in that dress! However, what the hell is celery soda?
I love that Elton is essentially the anti-Darcy.
Elton: ~flirty flirty flirty~
Emma: ~matchmake matchmake matchmake~
Elton: ~FLIRTY FLIRTY FLIRTY~
Emma: ~matchmake matchmake invasive matchmake~
Elton: ~SENSITIVE MOODY WOUNDED FLIRTY~
Emma: ~USES ASSISTANT MATCHMAKE~
Harriet: ~wut?~
Elton: ~...flirty?~
Emma: ~matchmake micromanage pats self on back~
The fact that Emma thinks that Elton is perfect for Harriet shows she doesn't see the situation clearly. She just sees what she wants to see
Absolutely. He and Emma had more chemistry, for crying out loud! He seemed to treat Harriet like a little sister, if anything. Even what he said reminds me of what you might say to your friend about their younger sibling
I don't care what others say, I love Emma. I really prefer protagonists who are not all positive and have some twists in their personalities.
Me too! What I really like about Emma is how obvious her flaws are. It greatly amuses me. If Emma wasn't this way, then what would make this story compelling or interesting?
I miss mr. Knightley already :(
You can already see the stars in Elton's eyes when he looks at Emma. How can she not see it?!?!

And Emma in this adaptation lives at home with her dad in her mid-twenties, so I assume there is some of that going on here as well...
Unless you define the office as her home in this iteration. Which it seems to be.
ChocolateIsMyDrug I was just gonna say that. She stops people from talking about the ocean cause she's so jealous at never having seen it. How is she a homebody? Maybe involuntarily. ???
Ooh Elton comes off like a decent guy so far... I can't wait to see that fall apart in a big reveal!
Gaaaaaaaah!!! He was so flirting with Emma! But that touch of the arm for Harriet was just so awkward yet tenseful and, Iiiiiiiiiiiih!!!!
This series is getting SO GOOD! Even though I kind of want to strangle Emma half the time, I seriously love Joanna playing her.
Emma considers herself quite the puppeteer. After watching this, I have to wonder how many people other than Mr. Knightley realise she's pulling the strings. Emma is most definitely not as subtle as she seems to believe.
Seriously! And Harriet looked so uncomfortable trying to pull off all that celery soda stuff.
I love when Emma looks at the side camera. I crack up every time. Also, the way Elton looks at Emma is priceless. You get the vibes way earlier in this series than in the book.
"I have seen couples to the alter that have started with much less."
lol who else thought about how lizzie and darcy started out
I like that this Mr.
Yay, Emma's sister exists in this adaptation! I wonder if she's married to Knightley's brother like she is in the book?
I love this series but I KNOW the next few videos are going to be awkward... I felt the same way while reading the book lol
That's the beauty of it. It's awkward because they're not meant to be. And Jane Austen managed to portray that perfectly.
workaholic888 Agreed!
His voice reminds me of Darcy's voice...
And his demeanor.
Kookie's Kookies How dare you 😟😟 Elton is NOT like Darcy.
Well, maybe a little. But not in deep character
Wow! Not what I was expecting from Mr. Elton at all. Hubba Hubba.
oh gosh it's not photoshop he's a real person abort abort
I can tell this is going to be as cringe-worthy as it's supposed to be.
*hides eyes*
So he's definitely one of the most attractive Eltons ever! Interesting development. Nevertheless, this point in the story arc is severely lacking in Snarky Knightley. I hope he won't be gone for long; I need my weekly fix.
Wow, Elton's tall. Also, celery soda may be one Pemberley Digital food I'm not sure fans will take to!
Good intro for Elton; the actor does a good job bringing that air of smooth, honest-yet-untrustworthy frat boy charm to the character. He's also pretty straightforward and self-confident, like Emma. That sounds like a likely proposal (re: "I am Emma...but....").
Also how oblivious she is to his actually hitting on her the whole time :P
Emma approved drinking game: Take a shot every time Emma waggles her eyebrows. :P
Drink every time she says her own name.
Drink for every wink!
All 3 sound like alcohol poisoning
Liver explodes in ten minutes lol
He's gonna be BRILLIANT :D Oh they have such great casting in this, particularly with the guys. Essence: Captured.
Definitely liking this Elton as opposed to Elton's in other versions of this story. I can't wait to watch this develop more :)
Emma was so keen on pushing Harriet on Elton that she didnt pause to analyze what really Elton wanted. She forgot to do her research.
LOL the thing with her eyebrows, it looks like she throws them up, they hit the ceiling and fall back in place again. :D
I'm still waiting for Elton and Harriet to start singing "rollin' with the homies" haha
I'm not supposed to like Elton but GOD DAMN HE'S FIIIIIINE
It's Paul Stuart from (character)! Yay!!
I must say, though, rock climbing in Joshua Tree is REALLY FUN.
GREAT casting for Elton!! A bit more *subtly* self-important than Book!Elton, but it's still definitely there. Cannot WAIT to watch this storyline play out.
Love the acting! Even though it seems like those two could click, they somehow just don't!
Watching again because of the announcement, and I never realized that Emma always calls Alex either Alex Knightley or Mr. Knightley. I love the throwback to Austen times that I didn't notice before!
Oh Emma, as a fellow Slytherin, I admire your work ethics, but I'm terrified by them
Senator Elton reminds me of Gordh's Darcy.
my exact thoughts too!
I was about to post the exact same comment - it's his low tone of voice and how much he acts with his eyes I think.
not so much in my opinion... elton is cuter :)
Emily Snyder Hah, I don't necessarily disagree, but their mannerisms seem similar.
I'm super late, but the actor for Elton actually auditioned for Darcy as well. :)
I literally squealed when Kirby from (Character) appeared on the screen... And then continued to scream the rest of the episode - great casting choice :D
haha right?! I was like it's KIRBY!!!!
having the same reaction 8 years later haha
Juxtaposing Elton against Knightley in everything from tone, appearance, etc. is an excellent and subtle plot device that makes this series unique from the book. Excellent acting from both leading guys! (And Martin, of course, he's adorable)
I SIMPLY LOVE CELERY SODA!
Ah, Paul Stuart is from Character! I thought I recognised him from somewhere.

Someone down below said that all Emma needs is a southern accent. My instant mental response was "then she would be exactly like Mrs. Bennet... *gasp* oh my lanta, Emma is a younger version of Mrs. Bennet!!!!"
Oooh, spookily true.
Yes yes very good casting.
"I drank it in college on a bet. What's your excuse?"
I'm glad I wasn't drinking celery soda... It'd be all over my screen.
(character)'s Kirby Driscoll (Paul Stuart)!!! So exciting to see him here^^*
elton's really going to have to roll with the punches
I'm sorry Emma, but Senator Elton is smoother than chocolate syrup and OBVIOUSLY flirting with YOU, the successful, ambitious, genius, and poor Harriet is more nervous than a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. They couldn't be less compatible!
Mr. Elton is so well chosen! I feel awkward when I look at him and hear him speak. Exactly how I felt when I read the book. Well done!
I love Elton he kind of reminds me of a weird mash up between Bing and Darcy.
I love how the end is so edited it reflects how the match is so forced and planned, without any spontaneous words or feelings
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cel-Ray
I did not know celery soda was a thing.
Emma's modern incarnation is so agressive, I love it!
I’m going to need footage of Snarky Knigthley rock climbing. For plot relate reasons. Obviously.
My thoughts EXACTLY.
Emma is nuts! I love it! And Elton is perfect -- attractive and definitely sure of himself.
It's Kirby!!!! Yay, love the casting for Sen. Elton! :D
We finally get to see Mr. Elton!! I'm excited to see *spoilers* when Mr. Elton confesses is love for Emma!
I love the fact the title of the episode is Jane Austen's original title for Pride and Prejudice.
Knowing how this part of the story will eventually pan out... watching this is going to be GLORIOUS!
Paul Stuart yay! love him!
Can we all just take a moment to acknowledge the title of this video? Great obscure Austen reference. I love the production team of this show! Also Elton is seriously perfect for Elton and I am excited.
Oh I like this Elton, the way he talks and moves certainly fit the book character well. Great casting choice!
I actually realize now that Elton in the book wasn't really a jerk, he was just forced by Emma into a situation which he didn't feel satisfied. It was only after Emma rejected him that he grew into a jerk.

Grey The Shy Girl I'm not so sure. Rejection can do funny things to people.
No.. actually he was a jerk in the book. He was doing the classic "compliment a girl's best friend to get closer to the girl and not the best friend" technique. oh! but Elton! that's the guy from (character)! with Jane Bennett/Laura Spencer etc! omg. roll with the punches!
Am I the only one who thinks Sen. Elton's mannerisms are reminiscent of early DVG Darcy?
I'm glad I watched the movie first, because it's got me really looking forward to what's coming with Elton.
i was wayy too excited for this episode.
The mr Elton actor is really good friends with Laura spencer and Wes aderhold who were Jane and wickham in LBD!!
I am totally warming up to EA now! It took me a couple of episodes to get over my LBD hangover. I hate waiting for the next episode though...dammit!
Rolling with the celery soda.
It's cool to see how passionate she is. She's beautiful and alive. She really does think she's doing the right thing. :( I can see how amazing she'll be once changes her view.
I wish these were longer! I watched the Lizzie Bennett diaries when it was already on like episode 90. So I could watch several at once. Haha.
So, is it safe to say the celery soda is the closest we'll get to the celery root conversation?
I like Elton and he and Harriet had great chemistry if you consider it's all sort of fake. While, I agree there is nothing wrong with not leaving things to chance if Emma thought this was the best idea, she should have picked something a little more natural and maybe something they actually had in common. This guy is reminiscent of LBD's Darcy in all the right ways.
A little more extroverted than Darcy...he reminds me of Wickham's initial impression
My favorite episode yet.
Oh my God the guy playing Elton stars in another web series I watched called Character! He's fabulous. I love him :3
He looks like a young american Benedict Cumberbatch.
Oh my gosh. I swear I'm not lying I was in Joshua Tree on Thanksgiving and I saw a group of people rock climbing. Why did I not stop and say hi?!
First Impressions...I see what you did there :P
This is going to play out interestingly...can't wait to see the next few episodes
Oh my goodness gracious...the celery root reference was genius!!
Bmart is way cuter than Elton.
I really, really love this series.
he reminds me of darcy...i've never read emma so i don't know if it's supposed to be that way. either way i like him and omg he's flirting with emma
Rereading the book, I caught the throwaway comment about celery root in the scene where Mr. Elton and Harriet are talking and I laughed!
This is perfect perfect perfect!!! It just captured how the whole "triangle" was awkward. :D
He's a pretty good Elton! I also may or may not have clapped at her mentioning Sacramento...
I'm enjoying their title choices.
ELLTTTOOONNN! Very Emma Approved, I must say :) another great casting choice!
Senator Elton is HOTTTT!
oooo that touch at 3:52
Interesting blouse (dress?) Emma
Loving the P&P reference in the title!
Woah… he was so charming. Took me completely by surprise
...Isn't...he the dude from that (character) webseries?
HE'S KIRBY FROM CHARACTERS!!! :D
***** Hahaha! I thought, "I KNOW THAT FACE..." at first! :)
***** I burst out laughing! First we had Jane in (character) and now we have him here! Yaaaay sharing actors!
God, Iove Emma. One of my favorites episodes so far :D
OMG Elton is hott!!! Wrap that up in a bag and send it my way. (Yes i know the plot)
Man I looovee her dress.
Elton looks so conceited... so perfect!
And I bet Mr. Knightley is still kind of disappointed with Emma... Oh, Snarky Knightley♥
