Sensei Thompson is such a wealth of knowledge and first-hand, practical experience. An absolute treasure for true Martial Artists to learn from. Even better, a true gentleman to interact with.
Have been privileged (lucky) to train under many masters in many styles, such as Sensei Sherman Harrill ("The Sherminator") in Isshyn-ryu, a couple seminars watching Tadashi Yamashita- sensei in Shorin-ryu (Suikendo), et al. They all speak of the pressure points, power coming from the legs, fluidity over power. Master Sensei James Thompson is certainly one of the most knowledgeable in the world in Uechi-ryu, and understands how many techniques from various styles have practical application. I know he trained as one of Master Uechi's elite students in Okinawa for years, was a Green Beret, etc.
Sensei James Thompson is a Grand Master, who knowsand understands the protected secrets discovered through years of practicing Sanchin, and the utility of Uechi Ryu for defense.
Was a student of Sensei Tani in Japan and also a long life student of Sensei S. Kimura in the USA until his passing! Both wonderful Karate Masters! This Sensei brings a softness that all students should carry in their training! I call it the circles in the mind and body! Oss!
I will keep that in mind for future videos. When filming and editing it is always a balance of making sure key parts of the body can be seen on smaller devices and showing the whole body.
In Uechi-Ryu the rank stripes signify master the master title, not rank. Technically as a 10th Dan, Mr. Thompson could have 4 or 5 stripes on his belt depending on how his organization shows these titles.
the reason i asked is i am an 8th degree black belt in taekwondo and have 8 bars on my belt , when i saw 3 bars on GM Thompsons belt i was a little confused on how the ranking system worked in Uechi- Ryu. Martial arts have always fascinated me no matter what style or origin. Thanks again for your earlier reply , best wishes Master Stevie
Stripes mean something different in Okinawan karate. When it's on both ends one stripe indicates the person is a renshi, two stripes is kyoshi and three is hanshi.

I want to try, Karate !
If there is a dojo near you, you should!
Spent a lot of time wishing the camera wouldn’t zoom in and would show us the legs, where all moves are powered, at all times instead
I will keep that in mind for future videos. When filming and editing it is always a balance of making sure key parts of the body can be seen on smaller devices and showing the whole body.
why does sensei wear a third degree belt, i have noticed this with other Okinawan masters, seems strange to me
