Interview with Gene Dunn - BJJ, Shotokan, & Judo Black Belt
Shihan Dunn is a lifelong martial arts practitioner, beginning his martial arts training in Shotokan Karate at the age of 11 and achieving the rank of Black Belt under Toyotaro Miyazaki. He is also a black belt in judo under Kyoshi Shiina and in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Renzo Gracie. He is the owner of Gene Dunn's Shotokan Karate Dojo and Brooklyn BJJ.
During our conversation, we discuss how in his youth he competed worldwide at the highest level of karate sparring; however now dedicates his life to the spread of traditional martial arts through safe, effective, and non-competitive methods. We also discuss the importance of martial legacy and instilling core life values in our students through our martial art instruction and practice - whether training in karate or BJJ.
Anyone who has ever trained with Shihan Gene Dunn knows first hand how effective his BJJ and Karate teaching methods are and how insightful a conversation with him can be. I personally gained a myriad of knowledge from our talk, and I hope you do too. Please enjoy, Shihan Gene Dunn.

    although its a kata from Uechi Ryu this version of Sanchin, your breathe is completly wrong, this is not goju ryu! its uechi Ryu!

    • @leithkarate

      Are you referring to the noise made on the exhale? While it may sound like the Goju-Ryu style of breathing, internally it is Uechi-Ryu. I also do the more familiar "Tst" sound with my breath, I just didn't do it in this video. If you are interested I talk more about breathing and how I teach it in this video: th-cam.com/video/dPouy7vKDXg/w-d-xo.html

    Thank you for the videos sir. I've seen a few of yours. I had a few questions. Would you say a person who doesn't hand condition shouldn't do shoken strikes ? And should someone who has had hand injuries avoid them? As a uechi practitioner like with any art I'd imagine you tailor it as needed . As it's not a religion but a martial arts system open to interpretation by the individual practitioner as grandmaster Mattson has said in his videos. Thanks for your thoughts on this sir.

    • @leithkarate
      @leithkarate 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I tell my students to adapt when injured. As for conditioning for strikes like shokens, even without conditioning involving striking and makiwara or something similiar, you can still strengthen the technique with proper practice through your kata.

    1:22 I've never understood in wa uke (double arm thrust) moving the tip of the open hand to the elbow. Would you please explain the reasoning/purpose?

    • @leithkarate
      @leithkarate 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sorry for the late reply. I have heard many reasons for this. One being to remind the beginner student to keep the elbow down when performing the block. There are also a lot of grappling applications that are worth exploring using the blocking movements. That being said, when I practice Sanchin outside of teaching I tend to keep the non-blocking hand in Sanchin instead of bringing it down.

    • @tonyverhulst9948
      @tonyverhulst9948 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the explanation.I too keep the non blocking hand in sanchin. That's where it can do something if needed. But then, I'm only Sandan, still training twice a week at age 78.

    ive learned some Uechi from a Master thats actually from Okinawa, and its crazy ro see how much it changes through many different teachers, and even the way its pronounced, its spelled Uechi but pronounced (wi -CHI ru) theres some good points in this video but theres so much more to it, the stances arent correct, the hand motions are off, hes a good teacher with good intentions but the style of Uechi ryu is off

      Thank you for your compliments on my instruction. One of the things I was exploring in this seminar that might have been lost in the video were some movements and techniques that could enhance ones Uechi-Ryu practice. One of the things I appreciate about Uechi-Ryu is how the style's fighting principles can be adapted based on what works best for the individual.
