I think bayonets were mixed up in the weapons piles turned in at the end of combat. Probably mostly by GI’s just grabbing whatever caught their eye and putting a bayonet in a scabbard. They didn’t know or care about makers. The German solider would have kept his equipment together and accounted for until the combat became too intense or they surrendered. Why would they throw their scabbard on the ground at a bayonet charge? It was attached to their belt on a frog….. I suppose it’s possible but not likely imo
Because of the Edelweiß (to my knowledge, all mountain troops are stationed in Bavaria) and last but not least the imprint inside the kepi, that says, it was made in Straubing (which is a town in lower Bavaria), I think the kepi belongs to the Bayerische Ostmark Group (eastern/northern Bavaria), not the Hessen Group. I'm going to start with Whittman Military Antiques afternoons for happy hour 🍸and Barstool Pizza Reviews 🍕 in the evening for dinner now ! I have that pith helmet but I got it too young and didn't realize what I really had, I was more interested in a steel helmet, consequently I didn't treat it right and the strap broke, I became interested in the shields and had to remove them only to have someone steal them from me, I can to this day not understand that suspension system in there, I tried to get that felt to stay in that metal knob in the center and I couldn't understand how that threaded end was supposed to be comfortable on top of my head and assumed something was missing there but I see the same thing on yours, I thought about buying replica shields after finding out how expensive the originals are on the market and even contemplated replacing one shield with a Luftwaffe eagle for a Luftwaffe afrika corp helmet as I've seen in photographs but I became disgusted by the broken green leather strap. Great stuff and all completely Relatable to this BOOMER as opposed to these Youngsters that THINK they know everything better than us. HERE'S HOW ! 🍻
Always wondered what Arb looked like. When you showed the framed picture of Eisenhower. I saw Arb in the reflection. He looks just like you Mr Whitman. Nobody could ever say he's not your son lol. Now I know what the face behind the camera is, I'm content, as its been on my mind from the first video you started with.
I love how Tom always starts to make the drinks with that spoon to get the ice but then tosses it aside and uses his hands! Just get rid of that stupid ladle, no one uses them!! Lol!
