Rendering and screeding a pool for success
In this video of the garden room we are finishing the inside of the pool. building a pool is a job that needs special planning and consideration to make sure that you have no problems in the future.

One of the weirdest jobs I have ever done was in a swimming pool. Some of the mosaics had come loose over the years so there I was in my snorkel with some sealant/adhesive that worked underwater sticking the tiles back down 🤣
Awesome video Robin, its been a pleasure to been working with you on this indoor pool project so far. For a year round pool, I have a 2000Lt stainless rainwater tank I've put a flexible stainless steel duct that winds 4 coils in the tank with inlet and outlet, I've filled that tank with dry sand over 3 tonne. Outside the tank the duct work goes through a commercial 8kw ducted resistance heater and bypass air/water heat exchanger with a radial blower on the main duct powered by my solar panels. In the future the same sand battery will heat my hot water storage tank for hydronic house heating. This is all insulated and all sits in my plant room today the sand is at 435°c cost $4k to build. I got the idea from the Finish sand battery company the heats their towns district heating system the same way.

I worked on an 16th century Manor House. The restoration took over 2 years. A sub contractor built a huge swimming pool. With beautiful marble tiles around the edge. It was supposed to an interior pool, but the roof would block the view from the main bedroom. So now it’s an exterior pool.

One of the most important things to know about swimming pools is that they are like a wishing well. You keep throwing money in them. Every man and his dog has some kind of pool in Qld. I live in rural Qld. Cattle country. But even out here my neighbour has an in ground pool. Just spent thousands on it because it sprung a leak. Even when running good. You have to clean them. Filter them. Monitor the pH. At least in the UK they won't fill up with Cane toads and Snakes. Which is a problem here. Running all the pumps is expensive. General up keep. Expensive. If you hire a pool man. Expensive. The novelty soon wares off and the things sit there as an expensive white elephant. Until it is 40C and someone ventures back in. Dirty great money pit.

We once made one out of massive concrete L-shapes that farmers use for silage. Quickest build ever. Most difficult job was connecting them on the back side and cut in the hole for the filter. Then fill in around them, glue on the insulation, let someone come over and glue in the pool foil and put the utilities in and off you go, just need to tile the edge.
I’ve used a lot of ardex over the years a45 a46 is brilliant for floor repairs great firm
Always a pleasure to watch skilled craftsmen, they make it look so easy! So sensible to have an indoor pool, outdoor pools even in hot countries are constant work and constant expense! This should be really fab when it’s finished, looking forward to the end result! 👏😀👍

One of the very first jobs I did as learner/improver plasterer back in 1968 was a large pool in that big old house opposite 'Ascot Racecourse' entrance .... It wasn't square though ... It was all wavey ... More like a Pond .... Talk about being 'Thrown In At The Deep-End' 😂😂

Did they leave the timber levelling profiles in the render? Or, did they remove and then patch render the holes they left?
Great video!...very helpful, as I’m embarking on what I gather to be the greatest DIY challenge of my life!...I’m building my own natatorium 😬....I was curious about what possible sheet materials would make for a good ceiling?...I know controlling humidity will be one of my greatest challenges, so something like wood planking, or drywall seem like a poor choice, do you recommend anything in the way of sheets or planks?

Question for you Robin - if you were just starting out today, buying your first drill/circular saw etc, what brand would you invest in? You seem to use Hikoki and Metabo lately, would you go with one of these?

Very interesting - shows why they tend to be a luxury option! I have a couple immediate concerns - having had to manage a pool in the past - is how is the homeowner going to be cleaning the windows & walls? 2, I would feel very uncomfortable not having access to all sides of the pool edge when in the pool, so far as being able to get out (It's open at the mo, but once those walls go in I'd find it awfully claustrophobic!) 3, I'm surprised you don't need access around the edges - not being able to easily clean the pool from all sides would concern me, as well as needing to get out in case of an emergency!
Very pleased to see how thoroughly you go into the details of any build. My go-to for PROPER construction used to be This Old House, ever since I saw the 1st episode in 1980, I love those guys. But I've been looking for a more British-focused resource, especially as we are in the design-phase of our own renovation here in Tasmania. Really thrilled to be watching your Big Build from the beginning & my husband is as rivetted as me - as he knows nothing about construction so your videos are the perfect introduction for him from the 'ground up', basically, and as I am at least as fussy as you, Robin, am thrilled you show how it should be done and WHY! Also, how important keeping a clean job site is to successful outcomes & ease of build. I get so mad when I see 'builders' smashing out glass with impunity & tripping over rubble when wielding a Sawzall - how can you be sure you ever get that area safe again? I'm forever picking up broken glass from the garden & paddocks, where there have been sheep, horses, chickens, dogs & kids... Anyway, you a Treasure and I don't know why I never found you earlier (a TH-cam anomaly)!! Many thanks - gives us a ton of confidence!
Thank you for your comment, I hear your concerns about the pool access, it is very common with modern pols to be shallow like this one and only have access to 1 or 2 sides, it all about making sure that people use the pool safely!! after all you can drown in a bath tub too if you are really unlucky!! so glad that you are enjoying my content down there in Tasmania!! many thanks for watching!!

As Pete mentioned there is a completely waterproof version of MDF called Tricoya, we are using a Board on our pool walls called H20 Powerpanel from Fermacel, it is also fully waterproof but you can tile on it as it is cement based

Do you insulate the pool floor and walls? Seems like a larger heat sink.
Hi Ed, we have 200mm of insulation under and around the pool shell so it will act like a large thermal store
