I think in schools, faculties must involve in teaching the first principles properly. There's no alternative to that. Teaching tricks is the worst ever thing one can do.
i agree , altho tricks are useful for solving when time is limited but first teacher should explain the question with a long and proper solution then he should aslo show from where that trick is originated
There is an issue with the curriculum as well. The level of difficulty changes drastically from class 10 to class 11. That forces parents to opt for the early coaching...
Very well said sir 1. I used to read a lot till class 10th and as a result despite not having prepared for entrance since class 9 I was able to interpret questions better than most of my fellow batchmates enrolled in such coachings prior to me 2. Till class 11 I had teachers who used to make me strictly mug up methods and I started hating the subject . But in class 12 I got a teacher who used to give most questions for brain storming and thanks to this I started loving the spirit of math again and aced math in advanced
I'm currently in 10th,now i realize how important are language skills.Actually,i would always face a problem when reading science fiction books to cope up with the language used in books but now thanks for awakening me and i will also work on problem solving skill.Thank you sir 😃😃😃
woh tab hota hai jab aap usko ek burden leto ho toh,i believe tht physics and mathematics will never be a burden for me yes it's hard at some points like rotational mechanics and calculus but u must love facing hard things 🙃🙃😕
@@Quantum.1006 brother, right now you are at the lowest level of basics, come in 11th will get small heart attack 11th physics is much harder than 12th as an experienced student
Very well said prof. For context I was lucky for math I never memorized anything from childhood and derived almost all the formulas from furst principles. I used to create my own problems and try to solve them myself for fun. This I think developed a lot of independent thinking in me that enables me to solve challenging problems in my career now. The usual excuse is it takes time to solve things by urself without looking at formulas, but this time spent really helps u to learn. For context, I have a PhD in Electrical engineering, have some 200+ granted patents ( US/international) and now working on Autonomous Driving research, that is pretty challenging and u dont find a formula to solve it in any book. We have to build innovation ourselves, and definitely learning problem solving skills at a young helps later in ur career. I didnt study at an IIT but I think I am doing decent. It is ok if you dont get into a great school, but learning good problem solving skills is more important.
It is truth ! Many Coaching teachers tell the solution methodology ,but they dont discuss the basics ,using that basics we can solve any problems in the life .!! Thank you Prof for Open Ideas that must spread among all so that Student can start focusing on self realisation of problem solving .
I do regret a bit about how I used to give so many olympiads from early ages (from 1st to 7th) and heck even went to state level for the examinations. The skills that I learned through these examinations were so helpful to me and I had that genuine love/curiosity for the subject but from high school, I only focused on exams and relayed on that rote learning method, and now I'm currently in 11th but luckily our Maths, Chem faculty are superb in making that creative problem-solving skills, bless him! but now I've realized the only skills that matter in competitive exams are the problem-solving skills that I lost fortunately enough there is still time to implement this change. Thank you professor for opening my eyes
@@straightforwardchad there are no REAL olympiads in class 1 to 7 , ig u are talking about sof ones , those are fake and rely on formula and pattern based questions
Sir, you really gave me a reality check in my academics. I'm fresher in 11th grade and started my syllabus 2 months before only, but now when I'm watching your video after video , I've realised that I was just trying to find a similar pattern in mathematics really forgetting that what the subject fundamentally demands- 'THINKING'. The points you mentioned in your videos are very precisely significant. Being confronted with a new question which demands an altogether new approach and not being able to solve that on the basis of my previous knowledge- or maybe knowledge of 'PATTERN'{usually provided by coaching institutes} , gave a lot of mental stress and self-doubt. Now, I'M REALLY GETTING MY ANSWERS.
Proffesor , I am a student just passed class 12th this year and a dropper preparing for JEE . Sometimes I also think of it that, Mathematics is the language developed by humanity which co-relates and defines the working mechanism of nature and the universe (also making a new subject physics ). With its upcoming problems we definitely need solutions , but in schools and tutions i think in most cases we actually learn the given sets of problems and its given sets of solution as you said in this video . here i think the issue is the word GIVEN we directly learn the solution of the question we face and remember it by practicing it to a level instead of thinking about the solution for the question without minding how much time it would take .as many people already solved the question before using there time and came up with varios methods to solve it . i think we should learn the way to solve how we can do the problem properly at school and tution. but nothing we can do since we need to develop to learn many things sooner and also as examinations have a time limit for which we need to cope up with it . therefore we feel difficulty in preparing for examinations like jee and advance since we need to think to how to solve it before remembering the likely solution like in board examination. guide us the proper way using time in mathematics problems pofessor.
Hello sir, I am a masters student in physics in IItg... I remember my math tuition teacher used to write a problem on board and asked us to solve it by ourselves ... We used to love trying that question in the beginning mostly we could not but one day suddenly we did solve it on our own... That happiness used to be precious. I used to think of that problem whole day and night.. It used to be great Ig students will not understand how to study or learn at a young age by themselves so we need more good teachers who should make them understand Thank you
Respected Sir! This is extremely fundamental. This should be labelled as the zeroth lesson of every subject/coursework available in the realm of academics at any level. Thank you so much Sir for these words. 🙏🙏🙏
I realized what mathematical problem solving intuition meant only in my first year in college - and this was through my room mate. He solved Math problems like I solved Physics problems. Interestingly, he never went to a coaching institute. Explains a lot.
Considering the language skills development part, I feel the best way I have learnt it by being the editor of my school magazine and participating in literary activities like debating, or even simply giving a speech. These things are usually ignored as wastage of time, but seriously, with the right efforts can be extremely rewarding. This might just as well be an anecdote, or probably a good communication/ language development strategy, who knows ?
It is a very good way to utilize one skills in practice. But then one needs to have a certain threshold quality of skills to become the editor of a school magazine in the first place!
Studying same text again n again is enough!!. You can get familiar with any alien language even without having any relevant knowledge if you study it repeatedly and consciously. by 3rd or 4th time you will capture the formulas and pattern of that language. You be able read between lines , figure out patterns and even solve questions effectively without practicing. But that can be little frustrating and require somewhat more dedication.
Well said sir ! These days the school teachers don't even care if you can do problem solving through various approaches they just give us algorithms to solve and get the answer Thankyou for addressing this
Sorry sir main aisa keh raha hoon, jhoonth nahi bol raha but ekdum similar aapke jaisa hi lagbhag-lagbhag mera bhi thought tha, aaj aapke video ko dekhne ke baad mujhe thodi aur clearity ho gayi. A huge thanks to you sir, aaj mujhe lag raha hai ki shaayad meri bhi thinking ability kaafi achchhi hai. Agar bhavishya me mujhe kabhi Indian education system ko badalne ka mauka mila to main aap jaise professors ki salaah jaroor loonga and mera end goal isi ko aquire karna hai and isi ke liye main jee ki preparation kar raha hoon.
Thank you. I wish you all the very best in this noble aspiration. You will have to be really in a great position yourself in order to able to improve the system.
Writing out your thoughts helps one to organise, evaluate and clarify them. Reading comprehension helps in building logic and analytical ability and problem identification and problem statement. It also develops imagination to fill in the missing pieces or identifying assumptions built into problem. I've found it extremely useful to use a private wiki to jot down my initial thoughts on a topic and incrementally add, subtract, modify and most importantly clarify my thoughts by finding gaps in my thinking. Basically it's like being able to observe and inspect one's thoughts objectively and critically as a third person would. It allows one to extract the core essentials from the incidental. Kind of like the Pensieve used by Dumbledore in Harry Potter where he brings out different memories and stirs them and isolates the essential ones from the incidental ones. Many of the important works done by cutting edge scientists was done in the form of pen and paper letters for long distance communication. I think this really helped them to focus and concentrate their mental faculties and review their line of thinking/approaches while explaining to others half formed ideas or intuitions or identify missing pieces or faulty reasoning or backtrack to a branch not taken. Similar techniques are used in AI to generate decision tree and prune dead end branches and evaluate/backtrack different options/branches in depth wise or breadth wise manner.

Good advise. I have had this perpetual complaint that students nowadays do not spend any time with a course/subject book. Unless that level of devotion is there, learning remains very shallow and superficial. I also ask students to read fiction/non-fiction to also develop reading habits and understand how sentences are constructed. Again, this advise falls on deaf ears.
Only few people truly appreciate the powers that reading confers on them. If it could somehow be demonstrated with irrefutable evidence, we wouldn't need to keep advising them.
Respected, professor. You said that a person needs to realise if he or she is good enough for jee or neet or not, but there have been innumerable cases where people who were not good enough for a very long time, but they worked hard to reach at the pinnacle in the scientific field. Lately, one of the fields medalists "june huh" is one such example. I believe, everyone can do anything, but i agree with your thoughts on developing the intuition by practicing.
I too had the same feeling as you when I heard this. The only difference was I instead got worried about the fact that if I indeed didn't have the nag for problem solving as sir said that I wouldn't be able to develop the ability to a high extent at all. Your comment cheered me up a bit thanks a lot Tanny
Respected Sir, I totally agree to whatever you have said. Spoon-feeding during JEE prep was deeply disturbing. Fortunately, I had a few Excellent teachers who encouraged me to approach problems independently. Over the past 2 years in UG at IITG, I truly realised the importance of this, and why critical independent thinking is so important, especially in engineering.
Well said, I recommend you suggest people to do something called "olympiads" conducted by HBCSE. Although this is popular in case of physics and chemistry (also due to coaching) but for maths it's not as common as the other two subject reason being very few people actually teach it. The problem solving mentality you develop by doing olympiads is insane and will most definitely help you in the future.
I never took tutoring classes for any subject from nursery to +1 (im in +2 and use to watch physics wallah and other youtube videos) I never thought that I need to memorize formula etc.. i just keep the whole thing in mind by making it a story like...teachers also helped me in this ..mom has a big role in this Love you mom
You have nailed the problem. Problem solving is a skill that is useful not only in Mathematics, all subjects of learning and the whole life at large. Those who follow your advice will be able be able to negotiate successfully the complex problems that life throws at you. I commend you for voicing these ideas so lucidly. A small supplement to your ideas. Learning to listen / understand and to comprehend fully what is being conveyed to you is very important before anyone venturing a response.
Thanks to my school ,I was never forced to learn so called welldefined answers from my class notebook. They very well accepted the answers written by own language skills and vocabulary. And did not hesitate to give marks for my answers. Thank You sir .
That’s true. In my Class 10, I observed that many of the students could not do even simple and basic calculations. They didn’t know the basic methods and concepts of mathematics which are taught in lower classes. What you told about language is also true. Throughout my school life I was exceptionally good at English and the credit goes to FICTION BOOKS!! And I’ve often scored the highest marks in languages in my school.
Blessed to have studied from Amit Gupta sir jee physics He helped me tu learn how to study physics rather than learning jee physics. The most crucial aspect of him was he anways emphasized on writing first and thinking twice 🎉
Sir, you really saved me.. I've a habit of reading even a small box item from my textbook of Physics or any other subject some times i thought that it is useless cause everyone said solve questions as many as you can and not everyone focuses on the every text of ncert which i thought is good to read. And I really don't like the competative environment offered by coaching institutes. Therefore, I've avoided coachings and tuitions since my 7th class one of region was corona. Now, I really don't want to go to coachings as they only focuses on question solving abilities and exams which I can not handle😢
Thank you so much sir. I recall my introducing puzzles both numerical and non-numericals to my son hoping that sequential thinking will develop. Today he has made some strides forward in maths. Till class 9 he never needed a tutor and has always topped the class year on year. Each word from you resonates so strongly that I found it necessary to write this long. Thank you once again. ❤
Im currently preparing for jee in class 12 and till 11th class..... I never picked up a book to read theory Bcz all these teachers used to say that "mujhse samajh lo book se samajh nhi aayega" And so i thought...... Books are only made for problem solving and not theory But since the start of 12th I've been studying on my own, from books, without any help And i can say for sure that it has helped me a lot, it saves a lot of time and my problem solving abilities have also improved a lot
3:22 nah, it's not the case with everyone cause' I've never taken coaching/ tuition for maths still i love it i sometimes wonder why students take coaching of maths I think it's just that children nowadays don't want to put any efforts from their side and they they're like we're finding difficulty inmaths
I highly agree sith you sir, especially with the language skills part. Funny thing, my 9th and 10th went in lockdown and I barely studied anything, 11th and 12th were taken away by dummy school. Luckily, my teachers till 10th were very good that I'm able to do/did almost all the things that u mentioned, Sir. Having good hold over language skills acts like a bridge between one's thoughts and expressing it to the world. Thanks for this video.
I was lucky enough as my parents did not force me to take tuitions. I have always relied on self study and have always pperformed quite decently in olympiads and IIT Jam. I can relate this with your words of wisdom❤❤❤❤
So enlightening and motivating. In class 11th I joined coaching institute, could not cope with their rather detrimental teaching methodologies, cried everyday for 2 months as I slowly started to lose interest in studies(which before class 11th I had quite enjoyed, learning through TH-cam, and watching scientists from all across the globe). I could not tolerate it and gave up. I spent a lot of time learning how to learn, and becoming efficient. I also tried developing mathematical intuition, by the great help of teachers like Eddie Woo, Grant Sanderson, Marcus du Satoy. I am so glad I did. I am planning to give the JEE exam, not sure if I would do well. I don't know if I would be successful, my parents are also worried. I have been a good student, I love science, and foremost, try to apply scientific thinking, logic, to daily life, but fear going through the rigorous competition. Nothing is certain. I don't know if you would be reading this Professor. But if you do, please can you consider giving somev advice.
@@Marvel173 Not in any coaching. Self studying mostly. Now that I know how to study and even master any concept through self study, I have hardly any time left.
There is no special advice needed, actually. I can relate somewhat to the feelings you had when going through coaching. Just cosmetically "knowing" the topics through coaching classes without really understanding does not really help. If you are genuinely interested in science you can go for BSc and then proceed strongly from there.
This !! This exactly is my condition! I left coaching and everyone around thinks I'm done for but I still feel the joy of studying and that's enough to keep me going !! All the best!
As a student who appeared for jee once and going to appear again just for a shot, I genuinely want to advice you and tell you that you took a great decision to opt self study,as far I'm guessing with your intrest in subjects you must have a good hold of concepts If that so you are still at a good phase of cracking exam for your desired college and for that you should focus more on practice and question solving (solve pyqs for mains if that's what you r aiming for ,or both if you are aiming for advanced),also try to give as much mock test you can and analyze them and repeat This will increase your speed and accuracy for the exam and build your exam temprament
Hello sir , I have done MSC in operation research from iit Mumbai and have been math faculty in Allen for few years. I totally agree with you sir but I also have to say some points. 1) Nowdays students dont eve have the time to think . 2) 2 years is very less to finish jee syllabus so student is forced to learn and mug up techniques else if he starts developing thinking then he will lose everything and may not even get admission in decent college also. 3) In our country if one tries to develop creativity in subject he will fail everywhere and time will be gone. 4) in this rat race and less time students cant sit patiently and think and think. Not possible to spend so much time.will have to go with flow.
Hello sir/mam, i am regular school student in 11th class going in allen delhi for preparing jee , You are mentioning some points which made me kinda scared is it really not possible a student who has started preparing from 11th class and can crack jee....with regular school.. pls enlighten me I am ready to listen the truth . @@zoro8800 hi dear ! Well here is the reality! 1) never try to learn the subject from heart as it wastes time. We still had this "coaching institutes issue" some 30 years back when I was attempting various competitive exams. I could have done much better without them. They broke my confidence and exposed me with some some students who acted smart. My advise is: don't rely on teaching, rely on learning. Going to IIT means, aiming to become leader. Eduction starts within. Empower yourselves. Last but not least, I complete agree with the presenter here. I can see his seriousness as he kept the phone hanging so not to be bothered.
I am very glad to know about the fact you explain in your video and reading lots of comments in this case . The teacher who changed your view about mathematics in class 10 or 9 was able to do it because of your maturity in mathematics. Teaching anything is such a thing you have to have to follow known to unknown. When you are in 6-8 in standard syllabus are can not allow to make something you advise, when you look on mathematics book in every chapter we see the main aspects is exercise, when we talking about mathematics we say practice maths is the best thing to make you perfect, at the age 10 to 16 if you say anybody to think over a problem over 5 min and then solve it , you must be joking. Because our hormone doesn't support to doing such things for a normal man . That is where a bigger part of people love and respect mathematics but not able to come up to the mark. If you a good student of mathematics you are blessed, and you must be fond of this subject before you enter your adolescence period, through out this period, and fall in love when you are well matured to love it. My dear friend world is a chaos and mind of a man much more complex than it the best way to teach is make your self believe that there is no exact way . May be l am wrong but may be .
After very much thinking i came to one conclusion that our school teachers can teach us the subject very well but because of the vast syllabus they only aim in completing the syllabus in due time they forgot that the students understand the topic or not if u agree like it
Your advice I loved most: Even if we struggle through a maths problem, even being unsuccessful, the sincere effort itself will teach us a lot of problem solving. Only if I could see Your video in my high school life and with the same inquisitiveness now. Now as I'm far out of University into the industry, with a moderately functional but fragile base of problem solving, I beseech You, Sir to make a dedicated video on problem solving foundation building for life, so that even I, at my present age of 26 can feel, that I can make the most of my brain for the lifetime to come, for a lifetime of love of problem solving and an affinity for complex problems. I will be eternally thankful and grateful to You Sir. Your originality, homeliness and simple explanation are what I absolutely love. Please keep on with Your work. It's impactful
Thank you for the very kind words! I am thinking of making a video on problem solving ... nothing concrete yet. But from what you have written, I think you have the most basic ingredient already in you, i.e. the love and appreciation for problem solving. Every person goes on a journey of self-discovery as as they go about solving different kinds and different levels of problems. And, there is no magic bullet too that one can prescribe. But let me think if I can come up with something concrete.
@@Prof_JC You are most welcome. I feel more inspired than ever. I was waiting for your reply, Sir. I am enriched by your response. Although, I do acknowledge your point that there is no magic bullet, there is a feeling that the struggle itself is what makes problem solving sweet. Your loving guidance and a direction to proceed, to develop stronger problem solving skills, are what matter, Sir. Very eager for your upcoming dedicated video on problem solving. Will wait patiently. Best wishes to You Sir 💐
Very well analyzed and advice sir :-). Most schools in India are regimented through syllabus and never encourage students to think out of the box. Most students in India are wired to learn how to commit and then vomit (memorize and then spill) in exams, therefore no chance of actually learning and problem solving methods. I am generalizing of course, there are exceptions. Has anyone ever wonder that out of 1.3 billion people in India, why there are only handful of Nobel prize winners???
I scored decently in class 10th and used to think I am good at maths only to realise later that at root level I used to just mug up(or say practice to hide it) the entire Book and memorizing the approach of problems and proofs I didn't understand. I never questioned my approach cuz it was working for me, I wish the school would have taken exams on more of a conceptual approach like they do in 11th and 12th.
Sir, I am started learning for JEE in mid class 11. I joined FIITJEE. But I enjoyed math so much that I used to complete the chapter and all it's problem before my tuition teacher started teaching in coaching just to show off to other kids. This was before 11th. I didn't like the mugging up style of teaching in FIITJEE. So, I left. I studied on own, although took a drop because I didn't read chemistry, still joined IIT KGP in 2021. BTW I enjoyed your MOS class in 2nd year in 2022.
Absolutely agree with you sir , same thing 3idiot movie had also delivered to audience ......The thing you said is absolutely true and this was the most pricking pain of mine throughout my whole school time period, that where they're teaching problem solving, they just throwing solutions and methodology not the mindset and philosophy to think , i always used to think does newton , einstein , etc geniuses also mugged up like this...not at all , bcoz they created these things by observing nature and with their own philosophy and will power.. i think teacher should teach mindset to the children of thinking not the methodology.... But at the end i concluded that most of the teacher in the school (almost more than 95%+) themselves don't know this thing, they also mugged up it from somewhere and transferring it to the next generation... this is one of the biggest reason why we lack in Innovation and solving real world problems.
This was so needed.. my son has been studying on his own and I always pushed him to apply his mind rather than giving him solutions.. sometimes the insecurity of FOMO drives us mad but then there are guys like you who provide a perspective.. thanks And your point on language skills is so spot on..Just yesterday as mybson was prepping for his final math exam, he mentioned to me that someone who understands the language better, will be able to solve problems better..
I am currently in class 12th, will be having my pre boards most likely in the last week of November, practicals from January 1st and board exams from February 15th. And i mentioned all that unnecessary information because I had to acknowledge the fact that how unprepared I am at the moment. I came across your video don't know how though I'm thankful that I did, and i realised one thing that everything you said about a student being in the phase from 6th to 10th standard, everything, I felt holds true for me. At this point I am not even sure if whatever I went through, whatever happened to me, whatever I did to myself is regrettable. One thing I'd like to add is that I never took proper tutions or coachings till I was in 10th grade. I had to take coaching for 2 months before my 10th board exams because I was not so good at math but I wanted a good report card so that my family might give me some value or consideration that yeah she isn't all dumb, we could invest in her. I secured an aggregate of 92% overall from cbse board, and I'm mentioning cbse so that one can understand that it's not that big of a deal. I have the same typical aspirant story where till 10th you're bright, good at sports, performing arts, extra curriculars as well as studies and then you're introduced to this competitive exam world mainly JEE/NEET. I cannot say that I was forced into it by anyone, in my case there was no peer pressure, no family pressure nothing of that sort. So I went for it, opted for PCB joined coaching, did offline in 11th and hell it was hectic. In 12th i switched to online so that I'm able to save some time and put that time into more useful things. Due to not having the proper problem solving and mathematical abilities, I became a flunking student in both my 11th & 12th. I've heard "when you're trying to do something you do not care about, you're going to be stressed" but the thing is that in my case I was sure that I wanted to do this, and yet why do i doubt myself? The frequency of these doubts have only increased with time, now I get these thoughts too much, thoughts like "am i in the wrong place"? Or "is this even made for me"? As a person, it completely changed me because I am able to analyse the kind of person I was until this NEET exam was introduced to me. I became introverted, silent, sometimes too chaotic on the inside, anti-social and so on. Now, these changes are both positive and negative. I try to perceive them in a positive way. So anyways, this video was a good one I mean i could relate to almost everything you discussed about. However, now that I'm able to understand the things you said, it's too late and I can only imagine a 6th grade student, if was shown this video would understand anything you're talking about at all. I can only say this on my behalf, i would not be able to understand the things or relate to the things you talked about in this video when i was in 6th standard or even 7th/8th. So my point is that by the time I'm ready to comprehend these issues, I've already been a part of the issues.
@@Marvel173 I don't find myself qualified enough to advise aspirants because I myself am one at the moment, but alright. There could be two scenarios, 1st that you're financially able that your parents can afford offline coaching and 2nd is that you cannot. So if you can, join Allen or Akaash (tbh it's not all coaching, it's your habits that'll decide how your preparation is gonna be and that'll ultimately decide your results). But if you want to go for online, there are various options. Few I'd go for are NEETprep, eSaral, maybe PW. Allen digital is good too.
I think I can understand what you are trying to say here. My suggestion is that to not being despondent. I am sure there are parts of the science syllabus which you feel comfortable with, perhaps even feel that you have a certain strength in. Try to identify those. Perhaps you can think seriously about going into BSc into that subject ... and slowly specialize in your area of strength. That would be a more fruitful approach rather than arbitrarily joining some professional degree course and not doing well.
My maths tutor during high school would always explain the concepts and ask us to solve all the problems by ourselves with all that were taught. He wouldn't show us how to approach a single problem unless we got stuck doing one. Even he asked us to not go through the given example problems as well. I haven't landed in IITs or NITs due to my lack of motivation and laziness but atleast I am grateful to him for teaching me how to approach problems without the mindset of looking up for solutions.
Thanks for your insights. However, you don’t get sufficient time to think and act on solving J2E problems. Only an extensive mugged up and mapped methodology helps in solving this problem. That's why students are prepared like the way they are....May be it is time that you IITs redesign your intake methodolgy. Purely my impression.
I'm happy to be pointed out by these mistakes, I understood the solution of language skills, but I'm still confused about the solution of problem solving.
Very well articulated....tution or coaching classes now a days teaches different kinds of format of questions....and students simply learn these formats...so there is no development of problem solving skills....probably because of this reason the quality of IIT graduates is not the same that we used to get 40 years ago... No offence to current gener of IIT..
Critical thinking is essential for higher order Mathematics. For example, abstract Mathematics which is g loaded iq, the measuring criteria is language and not math performance in aptitude tests. Language performance is the metric for abstract mathematics
You are right sir right now I'm in class 10th and i do go to maths tution not because i want but my parents want and all i do there is to sit by my self and solve by my own i told them that i don't need a tution for maths but they Just don't listen. This have become some sort of ritual to send your child to coching and tution even if they don't need them
Sir I am a class 10 grade student. I am not good at maths because I just can't remember the method of solving technique taught by the teacher. I am a slow learner in math because I just think the problem very deep.I am very sad about the education system of India and the top colleges are just producing extraordinary students but I can't understand why they are not solving the problem of education system at base. Sir I want to take a experience of JEE exam and I will work towards the improvement of education system. So the problem I am facing will not be faced by upcoming generations. Thanks for your motivation Sir 🙏🏻🙏🏻

In my class 10th an senior class math teacher Started to taight us after half yearly believe me that was the reason we all scored good in maths and some just even passed that might have failed . He said that he dont care about the copy maintaining and he taught the whole concept first and then the examples and then we were the one doing questions alongside.Thats the reason i chose maths in 11th as if he wasnt there we were dead in maths . Also every once in a week when we said sir we dont want to study he said lets talk then, we were talking about our study and he was the one giving us higher knowledge and different strategies or planning how to be disciplined etc.
You are absolutely right! Children are not allowed to think independently. Problem solution entails lot of discussion between child and parent/ teacher- and its here the that the independent thinking is stiffled. Parents have their own constraints and teachers their own. Evrn in most of the cases children are discouraged to do so by parents and teachers alike. I was very poor in maths since beginning. But somehow I could fancy that circumference of a circle should be equal to- the length of the circle converted in to a straight line- but neiyher the teachers told this nor I could muster the courage to ask . After retirement, one day to clear my doubt I took a scale & measured a length of thread equal to 5 cms, joined the thread with fevistick , ruoghly made a circle, using the formula mugged up in school , I found myself to be correct. My son studied Mech. Eng. in UK, he was told by an engineer from the same Univ. that in school days they were never taught the Pythagorean Theoram in the class room , rather they were taken out in the open , shown a tree or a pole and asked to measure a angle and distance. This is the how independent thinking is developed.
The four abilities to learn English as a second language are 1. Understanding 2. Speaking, 3. Reading and 4. Writing. In most of the Indian schools the fourth ability is given the most importance. If the teachers pay attention to this order in teaching none would beat us.
Sir I am in class 10, till class 8 end I also knew nothing about mathematics, in 9th I heard about IOQM but gave it in 10th. I qualified and now want to aim for INMO, but my main problem is that I try problems but then no one helps me out, My doubts remain unsolved most of the time 😢
Video content is invaluable. I would greatly appreciate your recommendations for math problem-solving books suitable for students in class 6 and 7. I used to excel in maths. However, I've been encountering consistent challenges lately while helping my daughter with her math studies. This has tested my patience and energy, while also increasing my gratitude towards my own school teachers with each passing day. About the language skills, I faced it in my first year of engineering college. Eagrly waiting for your video on "suggestions for parents". Best Regards
Thank you. I am not aware of books which can directly help in levelling up problem solving at the 6th or 7th Standards. I suggest that the attitude towards problem solving be changed using the same textbooks the students are using. For this one needs to consciously avoid the practice of somehow finding the solutions from some source. Instead students should sit down unaided and try to think of solving the problem from different approaches. It is definitely going to be a frustrating experience in the beginning. But there is no other way to really learn problem solving. For Standard 9 and 10 there are some good books though. If there any specific suggestions you are looking forward to as a parent, I will be grateful to learn them. I can then think seriously about addressing them.
@@Prof_JCSir, I have been studying mathematics in a conventional way till now. I watch lectures, then solve illustrative examples from a book and then attempt back exercises on my own. Although not completely because you know we have limited time to manage all three subjects at once and just after solving examples and all we have already solved about 200 problems. Should i stop attempting illustrations and hop directly onto the back exercises?
@@ishanvasisthiitb Even if you are not doing all the problems from the back, it is fine. Going through the solved examples first is okay. I also do it.
From the days of Macaulay, Indians have been trained to be clerks...IITians/IAS may be called glorified clerks...We are trained to serve the Master... Independent thinking, Exploration is simply not an Indian trait, dear professor... There may be few exceptions, but largely we as a nation pursue Security rather than Uncertainty...Most of our Start-ups are copied... We shun and shudder from Failure...Columbus could never have been born in India... I understand your point, but sadly it won't amount much.... Thanks for all your work🎉... it's always a pleasure to listen to you
Well, my story is slightly different, I do practice to read through my Own and to solve the Maths Problems by my-self also I used to try solve a question in different ways I think I could do, till 7th-8th, than COVID came so ofc my 8th-9th was like a joke, there was my mistake also I spent most of time in gaming or learning other things like COMPUTER APPLICATIONs but not on my Studies, then again half 9th i spent it on awakening my inner-student again.. Then again in 10th I was able to solve many different difficult question on my own, but I didn't emphasize on it because my Mind set was made like we have to STUDY for getting GOOD GRADES in EXAMS, so I studied for EXAMS only and solving different Problem sums was like a FUN-CREATIVITY for me, but I didn't spend more time on that thinking it is important to focus on BOARDS EXAMS and spent most of the time to repeat the TEXTBOOK SUM again and again like you said from 13:24 to 13:52 although doing these things I managed to get A1 in Boards, also that jump from 10th to 11th 🤐🤐... That was like a HELL for me and in 11th started initially to tackle those JEE level sums OWN I felt like I am wasting my time I have only 2 years to CRACK JEE so I had to mug those METHODOLOGIES and had to follow that Channelized way just to cover the syllabus on time.... And that's the bitter Truth, mostly student do this `FOR THE SAKE OF SYLLABUS COMPLETION ' also the environment created by the fellows, coachings centres, teachers , mentors and Society is like "DO or DIE" so we all do this currently. I am at the stage of Starting my 12th standard and thank you for your Guidance Sir.
I can relate to this situation. Up to class 8, we were taught maths to just be a mechanic and to correctly assign correct methodology to the correct question. It was in class 8 that due to the TH-cam algorithm I was able to access an expanded world of mathematics. From various foreign college professors to Olympiad guides, I developed better problem-solving skills, ways to decide how to approach a problem. In the following year, I was doing the same to Physics and Chemistry, thanks to my dad's friend who then recently became a tuition teacher; unlike in schools where all the emphasis was on mugging up definitions. I was an ardent story-based gamer upto class 9th and that helped me enrich my English skills. After that I switched my interest to computer history and programming-debugging and studying from magazines, communicating with people on forums helped.
Hello Mr.Prof, I am currently studying in class11 preparing for JEE, and I totally agree with what you have said in all matters (coaching, problem solving skills, language skills).I am unfortunate that I haven't developed any such problem solving and language skills in grade9 and 10, and by you I understand the importance of developing intelligence. May you guide me on how do I develop these skills from now onwards?
I never had tution till class 12 . Self taught. Though I was from one of the best school in Nation . But believe me sir your approach of problem solving and methodologies was unconsciously followed by me. Thanks for the beautiful message.🙏
1:30 with due respect proff You mention here that Most of the science students target for jee, it should be neet cause as far i know most of the students hate mathematics(Even jee aspirint) like me cause their Base is not strong and they simply haven't learned mathematics properly And this is the reason why most of the students took the path of neet(like me)
I feel so bad that I discovered you so late sir!And you weren't on this platform when I was in high school😓but no worries because "Jab jaago tabhi savera",I will work on my problem solving skills from now on
Just saw the phrase "teaching tricks is the worst thing a teacher can do", well i am urrently in 11th and this is the exact thing that is done in the coaching institute where i go, i couldn't understand the tricks instantly as i tend to keep them in mind only if i practice them two to three times on my own, and then here i am stuck behind all other students in my institute... I agree that problem solving should be done on our own, but what if the problems are too advanced, we will have to rely on the tricks given. Also learning the problem solving skills for JEE on my own would take a very long time as compared to mugging up the tricks taught at the coachings...
I do understand your problems with coaching institutes. It really is a major issue in the education of India, but one must understand that the system of coaching institutes is nothing but a consequence of the JEE exam. The JEE exam has to check the engineering capacity of all the students in India. The number of students applying to this exam is a very big number, expecting all of these students to have 'olympiad level' thinking is really not something which is feasible, for people may not be able to have all the facilities. And this is not to say that these students are dumb, the ability to think is something which one can awake to at any age, the student could become a genius in his 4 years at college. Thus it makes sense for there to be a premilinary exam not so focused on problem solving ability and thus it shows the opportunity for existence of JEE MAINS. Now it is valid to expect people who want to give the next exam to be quite good at thinking. But dare I say that for all the reputation that JEE advanced has for being the toughest exam and IIT being best college, this is a bunch of horseshit. One must understand this from a students level. JEE advanced is an exam which has 3 subjects; Maths, Physics and Chemistry, and covers vast territory of each subject. The questions given in the exam are quite tough, the number of questions are can be a big number, ranging from 54 to 60, and has a time limit of 3 hours. You mention olympiads opened your eyes in mathematics. Then you must be aware of the struggle you went through to solve each and every question. The persistence you need to have and the dedication. Being able to think and have new ideas is not something you can do on spot, must be something you would have learned that, it takes hours to solve a single question for the first time, which is reciprocated and shown in olympiads, which tend to have a handful of questions and a rather large time span for the exam. Consider this with the JEE advanced exam, and you find that rather than being a more thinking based paper, it is still much more towards a JEE MAINS type category, mug up and win examination. Their really isn't enough time in the exam to be able to think of new ideas. One must be able to recollect known ideas in exam. Just want to say, I speak as someone who is giving their 12th. The JEE advanced exam is just not something which is made for revolutionary thinkers. One must understand that JEE advanced really is just another exam which exists to 'crack' and get a good '1 crore package' to show your relatives. The other problem is the view of society. It happens quite often that people who pass JEE Advanced and get good ranks in the previous batches come and visit the school. They all come give us some advice talk about their 'package' and leave. I noticed one thing in all of them. All of them were directly or indirectly bragging about their 'IITian status.' This made me realise that inside themselves the only thing they were proud of was their achievement to get into some pretty building but not of their own engineering skills. I don't think once in their life had the considered their skills to be something of importance. Another instance I would like to share is a talk with a friend of mine who could be considered a 'topper' of the campus. I wanted to know what his passion was, I was just asking him his favourite topics, subjects. He was just completely blank. He just told me I do all of three subjects equally, otherwise my rank will go down. Mind you he is one of the 'top rankers' from our school which has branches all around India. One must understand, why will a student want to become a much better thinker if he has a much better chance of becoming an 'IITian' by simply mugging up. After all there must be some benefit to a student for them prefering to actually using their brains for once in their 17 years of existence. It is unfortunate but India as a country just doesn't value new ideas as much. Very simple way to show this is by how much of India's share of GDP goes towards its research. A meagre 0.5% is how much. Also see the history of India in International mathematics olympiads. And people take pride in names of Arybhatta and Srinivas Ramanujan, accomplished mathematicians hailing from our country, having absolutely no idea on how shameless they are to speak of such high mathematicians while having no clue about how India has depressed in its mathematical capabilities. How can India with its binary position on engineering or medical, the closeminded ness of people, and its complete blindedness for pure research be a country to flourish with new ideas? I dont think India actually wants thinkers, i think it wants 'Iitians.' It feels like things are changing slowly but steadily, but haha no chances for me I am leaving my schooling this year, I guess the only option left for me is to be another 'IITian!'
ALL the time ,l from the time I remember till June of class 10th all I was doing was fulfilling dreams of other - mugging up things like formulae, stories and practicing those same question time and again. Running behind marks as the school education system wanted me to do . Hence I almost completely lost interest in studies. Thanks to you sir for igniting the curiosity and love towards actual learning with the right approach. I have come back on track now.
Hi sir I am preparing for JEE in Kota, this is my drop year. The teachers who teach the lessons here focus on solving very short M&O fixed pattern questions. I have no interest in this type of education. This year I am preparing for graduation and in the future I want to become a professor like H.C Verma sir. I am fortunate that with the blessings of Mother Saraswati, I understand the facts by reading books and there are people like you who are inspiring students to shy away from book reading. You inspired me. thank you sir 🙏
sir, 1:42 I am really interested in pure science ( I am a student in class 11 , PCMB) however never find interest in Engineering and Medical field...I don't know why😅.... currently , I am deciding to prepare for Jee 2025....kinda confused... So, With lots of respect since you are leaving most of us dream ...I am asking you some suggestions ..
Language and music skills acquired (not forced) significantly help improve the way you look at solving a problem. Having a teacher who inspires you at an early age also goes a long way.
Honing problem solving skills being the main thing in the entrance examinations is one thing...but no one can change the fact that because these entrances have limted time and through the course of a problem one cannot always go through the traditional way.I myself studied maths for jee as in approaching it how actually maths as a subject should be approached...not mugging up the results but actually understanding it and reading advanced texts but it got me nowhere near scoring exceptionally in jee maths.I think that even if not intended, jee specially has become a result based game for the most part. For example in coordinate geometry one would perform better if they knew a particular result by memory and as a result when solving a problem they will be far ahead of someone who approached it in the "classical way".For physics and chemistry, theory is still quite relevant for jee but for most of maths one can't simply learn it the classical way, that's what I think.
I'm currently studying MSC in mathematics and when i was in my bsc i faced this same difficulty regarding problem solving and similar kind of circumstances happened in my case adress by the professor . The thinking ability to solve a particular problem is very important and it then happen when you done this by your own.
Thank you sir, for giving guidance to the village student . This type of guidance we don't get from school, coaching or to hear from sinear. Now somehow I am a college student, but please bring this type of guidance video so we can improve our self.
Arthur and Bella play the following game with a deck of 25 cards. Every card has a distinct natural number on it from the set: S={1,2,…,25}. Arthur first picks a card with even number x_0 and removes it from deck: We have S:=S−{x_0}. Then they take turns (starting with Bella) picking a card with number x_n ∈ S which is either divisible by the previous number or divides it ( i.e. divisible by x_(n-1) or divides x_(n-1) ) and remove it from deck. The player who can not find a number in deck which is a multiple or is divisible by the number on previous card loses. Which player has the winning strategy ?
The way you adressed the problem solving part it was very nice sir I can also say that bhannat maths channel does exactly what you wanted a teacher should do.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I completely agree with you. I really appreciate in future also if you share your advice that will really help parents like me. Thank you once again.
It's true. Nowadays many schools are taking exams as mcqs but the students are just mugging up just cz it is told that these questions will come(70% students). I think school should start changing those type of concepts where marks are given more importance than learning. Even though many teachers try to change those rules but still they can't cz we are told marks are more important than learning
Very true our education system is deviating children away from languages. Majority of students have no basic understanding of languages nor do they have ability to write. It’s sad but true. Being teacher I always tell my students to read and understand on their own and to write words in full because students don’t like to write so they end up writing in abbreviations which later they themselves do not comprehend.
Very thought provoking, insight full, podcast really an eye-opener.You come across very sincere person who wants to pass on your knowledge from your personal experience which is invaluable.May god bless you
I could solve different types of questions in 8th and 9th that other children weren't able to. But going towards the boards and teachers repeating the same methods and not inciting minds to solve innovative questions has been a major problem for me as well as other students. I think problem solving must be introduced to NCERT textbooks rather than just mugging up whatever we have learnt.
Well said, the distinction is apparent in iiser and niser, where research is the main scope. There is a quantum leap in the standard of boards/coaching and the one needed for original thinking.
It needs alot of time .

2. Till class 11 I had teachers who used to make me strictly mug up methods and I started hating the subject . But in class 12 I got a teacher who used to give most questions for brain storming and thanks to this I started loving the spirit of math again and aced math in advanced

That's really inspiring! Where did you get your PhD from?

Hello sir,
I am a masters student in physics in IItg... I remember my math tuition teacher used to write a problem on board and asked us to solve it by ourselves ... We used to love trying that question in the beginning mostly we could not but one day suddenly we did solve it on our own... That happiness used to be precious. I used to think of that problem whole day and night.. It used to be great
Ig students will not understand how to study or learn at a young age by themselves so we need more good teachers who should make them understand
Thank you
@deepdatta2052 you are in which coaching ?
Respected Sir! This is extremely fundamental. This should be labelled as the zeroth lesson of every subject/coursework available in the realm of academics at any level. Thank you so much Sir for these words. 🙏🙏🙏
I realized what mathematical problem solving intuition meant only in my first year in college - and this was through my room mate. He solved Math problems like I solved Physics problems. Interestingly, he never went to a coaching institute. Explains a lot.
So great to see you here, Tanmay! We do have such gems in every batch, don't we?! :)
Great to see you making genuine and helpful videos, Jeevan Da. I binged watched so many of them :) Great work :)
I can absolutely relate on the intuition part in solving physics problems
Considering the language skills development part, I feel the best way I have learnt it by being the editor of my school magazine and participating in literary activities like debating, or even simply giving a speech. These things are usually ignored as wastage of time, but seriously, with the right efforts can be extremely rewarding. This might just as well be an anecdote, or probably a good communication/ language development strategy, who knows ?
It is a very good way to utilize one skills in practice. But then one needs to have a certain threshold quality of skills to become the editor of a school magazine in the first place!
Language is the key to the treasure of knowledge
Studying same text again n again is enough!!. You can get familiar with any alien language even without having any relevant knowledge if you study it repeatedly and consciously.
by 3rd or 4th time you will capture the formulas and pattern of that language. You be able read between lines , figure out patterns and even solve questions effectively without practicing. But that can be little frustrating and require somewhat more dedication.
Salute to you sir......
Today I actually understood the meaning of a teacher in IIT.....
Well said sir !
These days the school teachers don't even care if you can do problem solving through various approaches they just give us algorithms to solve and get the answer

Well said, I recommend you suggest people to do something called "olympiads" conducted by HBCSE. Although this is popular in case of physics and chemistry (also due to coaching) but for maths it's not as common as the other two subject reason being very few people actually teach it.
Blessed to have studied from Amit Gupta sir jee physics
He helped me tu learn how to study physics rather than learning jee physics.
The most crucial aspect of him was he anways emphasized on writing first and thinking twice 🎉
which coaching were you in
Sir, you really saved me..
I must commend you on taking such care for your son's proper education.
Im currently preparing for jee in class 12 and till 11th class..... I never picked up a book to read theory
Bcz all these teachers used to say that "mujhse samajh lo book se samajh nhi aayega" And so i thought...... Books are only made for problem solving and not theory
But since the start of 12th I've been studying on my own, from books, without any help
And i can say for sure that it has helped me a lot, it saves a lot of time and my problem solving abilities have also improved a lot
Thanks for sharing your story. I hope your juniors in high school (below +2) will learn an important lesson from this.
3:22 nah, it's not the case with everyone cause' I've never taken coaching/ tuition for maths still i love it i sometimes wonder why students take coaching of maths I think it's just that children nowadays don't want to put any efforts from their side and they they're like we're finding difficulty inmaths
Quality of teaching maths majorly lack in schools as the class standard raise.

As a student who appeared for jee once and going to appear again just for a shot, I genuinely want to advice you and tell you that you took a great decision to opt self study,as far I'm guessing with your intrest in subjects you must have a good hold of concepts
If that so you are still at a good phase of cracking exam for your desired college and for that you should focus more on practice and question solving (solve pyqs for mains if that's what you r aiming for ,or both if you are aiming for advanced),also try to give as much mock test you can and analyze them and repeat
This will increase your speed and accuracy for the exam and build your exam temprament
Also don't forget to revise
Pls enlighten me with reality. Thanks and pls reply
@@zoro8800 hi dear ! Well here is the reality!
1) never try to learn the subject from heart as it wastes time. Prepare strictly as per syllabus.
2) practice from good study materials like from fiitjee ,narayanan, test series etc ..
3) dont waste time thinking and thinking developing creativity etc...u cant afford ..only 2 years and 3 huge subjects.
4) see the solutions and try to understand the techniques used in solving them and remember them.
5) u have to be choosy smart and to the point . U r not here for olympiads...
6) dont waste time learning proofs of everything.
U cant do this in 2years

We still had this "coaching institutes issue" some 30 years back when I was attempting various competitive exams. I could have done much better without them. They broke my confidence and exposed me with some some students who acted smart.
My advise is: don't rely on teaching, rely on learning. Going to IIT means, aiming to become leader. Eduction starts within. Empower yourselves.
Last but not least, I complete agree with the presenter here. I can see his seriousness as he kept the phone hanging so not to be bothered.
I am talking about coaching for students in class 6 to 10. This is a relatively new trend that was not present 30 years ago.
Will wait patiently. Best wishes to You Sir

Thank you sir for making this video on my request. It's really helpful for students like me who are dreaming of JEE.
It's my pleasure. Thank you for asking in the first place.

This was so needed.. my son has been studying on his own and I always pushed him to apply his mind rather than giving him solutions.. sometimes the insecurity of FOMO drives us mad but then there are guys like you who provide a perspective.. thanks
And your point on language skills is so spot on..Just yesterday as mybson was prepping for his final math exam, he mentioned to me that someone who understands the language better, will be able to solve problems better..
Very well said sir. Really appreciate this video. Loved it. This actually the truth of our society, not from today but from many years.
@@Prof_JC Thank you for the suggestion, sir. 🙇🏻♀️
You were fortunate in having a teacher who valued independent problem solving.
Thank you so much sir! This is deep, yet subtle.
I'm happy to be pointed out by these mistakes, I understood the solution of language skills, but I'm still confused about the solution of problem solving.
Currently in class 9 and going to coaching, didn't ever think of this all. Thank you very much for saving us students in nick of time.......
This have become some sort of ritual to send your child to coching and tution even if they don't need them
Self study is very important and provides imagination and language skills help a lot.
Sir I am a class 10 grade student. I am not good at maths because I just can't remember the method of solving technique taught by the teacher.
Many a times the writing is also about mugging up. They do not pay attention on creative writing and improving the text grammatically.

I feel so bad that I discovered you so late sir!And you weren't on this platform when I was in high school😓but no worries because "Jab jaago tabhi savera",I will work on my problem solving skills from now on
Sir, can you make another video on how to increase problem solving skills? In detail, how can I do myself?
Yes sir our teachers vikas gupta sir build a out of box thinking we are able to a problem by 2 -3 method
I am a language coach and yes you are right that language is critical to the learning process. All subjects are dependent on this learning
I dont think India actually wants thinkers, i think it wants 'Iitians.'
It feels like things are changing slowly but steadily, but haha no chances for me I am leaving my schooling this year, I guess the only option left for me is to be another 'IITian!'
This comment should be pinned 🙌🏻
ALL the time ,l from the time I remember till June of class 10th all I was doing was fulfilling dreams of other - mugging up things like formulae, stories and practicing those same question time and again. Running behind marks as the school education system wanted me to do . Hence I almost completely lost interest in studies. Thanks to you sir for igniting the curiosity and love towards actual learning with the right approach. I have come back on track now.
I wish you all the best in this new way of studying.
My reading, writing, vocabulary is amazing but when it comes to speaking, it's a dumpster fire.
Hi sir
I am preparing for JEE in Kota, this is my drop year.
You inspired me.
thank you sir 🙏
sir, 1:42 I am really interested in pure science ( I am a student in class 11 , PCMB)
however never find interest in Engineering and Medical field...I don't know why😅....
currently , I am deciding to prepare for Jee 2025....kinda confused...
This video is meant for the students of Class 6 to 10, not of Class 11 and 12.
I'm currently studying MSC in mathematics and when i was in my bsc i faced this same difficulty regarding problem solving and similar kind of circumstances happened in my case adress by the professor . The thinking ability to solve a particular problem is very important and it then happen when you done this by your own.
I am currently in 11th and i agree with all of your points ❤
The way you adressed the problem solving part it was very nice sir
I can also say that bhannat maths channel does exactly what you wanted a teacher should do.
I believe even overthinking was also a key for me to acquiring these language skills 😐
Thank you Sir for this eye opening session 🙏🙏♥️
Very true our education system is deviating children away from languages. Majority of students have no basic understanding of languages nor do they have ability to write. It’s sad but true. Being teacher I always tell my students to read and understand on their own and to write words in full because students don’t like to write so they end up writing in abbreviations which later they themselves do not comprehend.
"Artificial cosmetic momentum provided by coaching teachers". Says it all.

@@pkgamer910looks like someone didn't focus on language skills in school 😂😂
