I'm a 60 year old retired chippy from the UK now living in the Czech republic.........Long story. Personally the older guy maybe slower but the quality will be far better and he can also pass his skills on to the younger ones as long as they don't touch his tools and buy their own.

Quality first on gate production, speed will come as they are knocking on gates, A guy who brings his own tools means he cares enough on a trail to do the best job with tools he knows he can use, which also means he will value your tools whilst using them and will look after them....Good luck with your choice

Hey Dave, my son had a great quote from his old boss who did specialized construction work. “You can have it fast, cheap or good, but you can only have 2 of the three. So either it’s good work and fast but it won’t be cheap or fast and cheap but it won’t be good or good and cheap but it won’t be fast. You can never have all three. Honestly I’d look within the company and think if there was anyone who you think would do great with training and I’d ask everyone if someone was interested in moving over. Maybe you’ll get lucky and have the same person interested that you think would be good.
The other thing to consider is your guy who’s always been around wood may have capabilities you aren’t aware of. Think of places you’re wanting to take the woodwork and see if any of the guys have the ability to do it now. You never know.

    Another great video guys!
Also, for Stevie - Ducks don't feel the cold like we do, as they have something called a "counter-current heat exchange system", where the veins and arteries in the legs are entwined to create heat. So blood flowing into the legs is cool, but when it goes back into the body, the heat exchange system warms it up again.

Take the guy with quality and knock him in to shape with on-site training like you did with Jamie. Within six months to a year, you'll have a great guy. He'll settle down in time .

Dave I always believe someone who brings in his own tools especially on a trial is a good thing, I let him know that he's possibly in with a chance but needs to work faster on targets perhaps he might suprise you, fingers crossed 🤞,

Hey, Im a long time watcher, first time commenter. In relation to your dilemma about whom to hire, I would 100% say, wait for the right person! I have ran my business solo for a lot of years and I do things a certain way because I know the standard I want to produce for the customer and for my brand. I have trialed people before to help me out, and you pick the best out of what is available, however, that doesnt always mean that they are the right fit for the business. You end up wishing you held out for the right person. What is available at the time is not always the best fit for you. I would say from my experience, for custom stuff like that, unless you feel the "spark", its worth waiting. You guys have the reputation for quality, and if you are looking to improve on that, you need to have the faith in the person from the start. You are well known and trusted enough now, that people will want to work for you! so I would say, give it a bit more time and see who else really wants you join your team. Thats just my thoughts on the matter, sorry for the essay! You folks are awesome!

Get the older guys, they can train the younger guys already employed.

Smashing job Stevie & crew🤗.... as to the hiring 1 of the 3 gents. I would first ask all the employees is there anyone interested in moving up to constructing what ya need. You want to make sure there's no hard feelings amongst your loyal crew. Then if NOT bring in each man your interested in FILLING THE position for a 2 day trial period. Your wood guy without the license may surprise you how good he is. I think hands on experience is under rated to often and Good hard working people are often over looked. But if it required and you like him then give him a job not requiring the license and incurage him to get the license to be able to do that job. Just my opinion you've been doing an outstanding job with your company for years you know what the right chose is for your needs & business . Great cuts, high & tight ,very much like our Marines 🫡🫡😊...❤little pickles 😊

Hi guys as an employer I always understood that if a position became available then it would be offered to the staff members first. One this will help them further their career and let them learn new skills, and number 2 it shows them that you as an employer trust and respect them and are willing to give them a chance to step up. If nobody is interested then you offer it out to the public etc…. Good luck and I’m sure that you will make the best decision for the company in the end. I would insert an inspirational quote here( ) but I cannot remember it. 😂.

Hello Dave & Stevie, Great channel I been here a long time and full respect to you guys for how you treat and respect your customers and staff, regarding the potential new starter on the bench I would go with the chap who has no qualifications, for these reasons,
He Will have to work harder to prove to you that he is up for the tasks ahead,
He will do exactly what you ask him to do your way with now arguments,
He has probably been turned down for all the jobs he really wanted all his life because of the lack of qualifications,
He will probably have a lot more skills in other departments as he will have had several different jobs,
Give him a shot! what is the worst that can happen? 3 month trial and you will see the guy you wanted😁
And just for the record I don't know him or have never met him but I will say this,
I never did good at school and never got any college qualifications, I never got an apprenticeship and at the age of now 62 I would consider myself one of the best refrigeration engineers in my field👍
    Keep smashing out guys!!!❤

There is a mini loader digger combo you can get and the attachments for landscaping (roller, rake, etc.) making this task much easier. Not sure how much landscaping is your business doing but this is something worth considering if you do jobs like this often. I had a solo guy come out and do my yard in a machine like this in 1 day, really good stuff.

If it doesn’t work out you part as friends. Thing is Dave. A trial is rubbish. Whoever is doing it knows they are bringing watched and on tenterhooks. You can still keep looking. Give it 4 weeks and it may be a different story.

If a bird is especially cold, it may alternately lift one foot and tuck it into its feathers to help conserve heat. Another thing that you may see a duck do is tuck their bill into their feathers. I'd opt for the guy that brought his tools BUT I'd have one of the guys that wants to learn. And I'd train both of them how you like it done, then you have a backup.
