I am reading your book The Indian Indie Film. I have a Samsung S22 ultra and not an iPhone. Can I get the same effect with the tips you gave for iPhone filmmaking?
Thank you for buying and reading our book 🙏 You should be able use many of the tips for iPhone filmmaking to filming with a Samsung S22 Ultra or any other smartphone. The general principles of composition, lighting, and sound remain the same. The reason we chose an iPhone was for the consistency of how the app Filmic Pro would work on an iPhone vs an Android. The app is not necessary. But at that time we felt we needed to shoot in log format and that app was the only way to do so. Later I realised that we got no advantage in shooting log, as we did not have the budget to hire a colourist anyway. Shooting in standard would have saved more time and money. I believe S22 Ultra has multiple lenses. The first generation iPhone SE had only one lens and we to shoot the whole movie in that one lens size. I'd suggest you to make use of those additional lenses. I am one who believes that the best camera is the one that you have in your hand. No matter if you are shooting on an iPhone or a Samsung, what matters more is what is in front of that lens. How's the lighting, is the set decoration working, are the actors good, is the sound audible, is the story sound? These choices combined matter more than the choice of the camera alone. Shoot with you phone. See how it works. Figure out its strengths and weaknesses. Then work around it. The same applies to any camera you might be working with, in any budget. That said, you still have to learn how to make films, how to tell stories that keep people engaged, how to shoot to visuals that capture the feel you want, how to edit, how to mix sound to direct audience subconsciously, how to talk with actors to get the performance you need, how to lead a group of technicians with far more experience than you to work together to bring your vision to life and many such artistic, technical and management skills. Film school or no film school there is no way of escaping learning that if you want to be a film director, a good film director. I will be doing a couple of videos in the coming weeks on such questions that aspiring filmmakers have. Hopefully that will give you a more holistic view.
