We adopted a little miniature pincher, we didn’t crop her ears or doc her tail, she was adorable.

They could probably do these till the end of time because the history of humanity doing awful things to each other is almost as old as mankind itself we don't have the records of those first punishments that would seem overly harsh today. But honestly you have to remember that back when all of these things were taking place there was no International police in system there was no DNA testing there's no fingerprinting sistemi then. So physical disfigurement in a really visible way like the ears is a way to make sure that a person can never Escape their past just by running off to some other place and going by a new name. Crimes that are super dangerous to the stability of a government like counterfeiting needed to have obvious punishments.
The branding + ear removal is a bit much. Like pick 1.

The laws were as brutal as they were strict. These punishments sound like an deterrence. Leading by example. If the law wasn't so lenient these days. Crime and corruption wouldn't run rampant.

This is really telling on how sick the human mind is seeing as how many worse punishments in the history of mankind there are. Especially considering that when compared to other animals we are fairly recently created creatures.

Ear cropping on dogs is not a punishment. It is a medical procedure. Especially for working dogs that are still active hunting hounds it is necessary to keep their ears out of the brambles and to prevent them being torn on vegetation and bleeding to death during a hunt when they are out of sight of their owners.
Some dogs were bred for hunting for so long that the natural shape of their ear causes chronic ear infection if left uncropped and therefore it is medically necessary to remove the excessive bits of ear to prevent reoccurring infections and deafness.
Some dog breeds bred for livestock Guardians also have their ears cropped as they spend long amount of time unsupervised by humans. It also prevents whatever wild beast they're supposed to be guarding against from having a soft and floppy handle from which to defeat the livestock Guardian by biting down on their ears.
Nothing about the way that most dogs look today is quote-unquote natural it is all from centuries of breeding and therefore cosmetic surgery for your pet, as long as it does not damage their quality of life but is intended to enhance their quality of life like preventing ear infections is entirely normal and within the boundaries of what a proper and responsible dog owner should do.
The breeding of so-called frog Bulldogs with a bent back and doubled over muscles however is absolutely barbaric as the poor animal is not even able to move about properly or breed naturally. If you want to talk about animal cruelty talk about these things like the intentional breeding of snakes to give them a neurological dysfunction so that they wrap up around themselves and have to be untied. That is human depravity and cruelty.

They didn't just publicly humiliate men accused of being bad husbands. They would do that to men who were the victims of domestic violence. Be sure to let any feminists know, when they try to tell you that women have been oppressed and men have been privileged throughout history. That if a man was discovered to have been physically abused by his wife or girlfriend, they would generally drag him through town.

The recent ear mutilation of a kitty in a vets office passed off with a gee, we're sorry, is totally not enough. The vet should have done immediate reconstructive surgery at no cost to the grieving family and at the very least financially compensated that family. The vet has insurance or should have for such tragic incidents. Shame on that vet. Saying you are sorry in this case is absolutely not enough. Justice needs to be addressed for that family and of course the mutilated kitty.
