So I purchased the 22TCM-9MM TAC ULTRA HC Pistol. For a while all the Rock Island pistols were VERY hard to find in stock. Anyway, I was completely surprised about all the things I DIDN'T have to buy to make it an awesome pistol. I didn't have to spend SO much extra that I could get the TAC Ultra HC in 10mm with threaded barrel! I've added a .40 S&W barrel to that setup and now I have 2 pistols shooting 4 calibers. I'm going to add a .38 Super barrel to the 22TCM pistol combination and soon I'll have one in .45ACP shooting .45 SUPER as well. (New custom barrel for that one)
All things considered I couldn't be happier. Yeah, I may change the trigger and tweak it a few things but it's totally not required like it is with some pistols.
Kudos to ARMSCOR and Rock Island for producing such fine products. Oh, I almost forgot. I also picked up the 22TCM 9R Glock 17 setup!
    Major Kudos!!

Go try a rental one and say that again. I've found that ranges tend to get a real first hand experience on how reliable a gun is over many rounds and abuse, and they catalog round counts very well.
I know of 3 indoor ranges in my area that had them, all but one got rid of it, and the guy who hasn't keeps both of them (9mm double stack and 45acp M1911A1 style) to prove a point about cheap vs good 1911's. the 45acp singles you can most likely get away with high counts, but the 9mm's have a shit ton of issues with both mags and feeding if the ramp is oddly located in distance from the magazine and if the throat of the mag becomes mishapened (double into single stack transitions are unreliable by nature for reasons).
Ended up keeping to a second hand P-09 for two years, and saving up/waiting for a custom 2011 with exactly what I wanted while having my frame for it sitting in a shoebox.
Of course the thing is now a wallet burner, just drives you to keep shooting and keep practicing and keep trying to get both faster and more accurate, now have 3700rds through it and I will have had it for a year come the 20th.

Amazingly durable, and reliable firearms. If you’re on a tight budget and want something dependable spend your money wisely and get a ROCK ISLAND 1911/2011!!! You won’t be disappointed. Good review. I got lucky and bought the same gun with the kit that came with the 22TCM barrel and spring as well. This was my first 1911/2011 and I truly enjoy shooting it. It's always fun firing some 22TCM at the range. Everyone looks over to see what kind of canon you're holding. When I convert it back to 9mm, it is a smooth shooting gun, little felt recoil. The only thing I did to mine was adjust the sights and the trigger to get rid of some of the takeup. For someone looking for an entry 2011, this RIA has my vote.

(Use .40 in a 10mm at your own discretion. I do...but I clean the chamber hounds tooth clean before going back to 10mm. Use 180gr, the lighter stuff won't work)

I picked one of these up today. It is a 9mm. I put 450 rounds through it without a single fault. Set up at 5 yards necer missed a 1in bullsey minus the fist shot that was about an inch low. Same at 7 and 10. At 10 had a 2 in grouping. Just because I set it to 30 yards was keeping about an 6 in grouping. I can recommend this gun any time. The weight feels great. My Rock Island Ultra FS HC (16+1 10mm) is a fantastic 1911, even if it doesn’t have a rail or front serrations, and comes stock with a lot of features that add mucho money to the base price of most 1911’s. Typical of a solid steel 1911 the recoil is minimal, even with juiced up 10mm loads, which makes shooting very enjoyable!! Great review as always KS! I just purchased one, and the only problem I found. I wish it would have came with 2 magazines instead of the one. I’ve already found a holster for it. All I need is about 5 more magazines for it. I looked on Armscor website, and not only found the magazines, but also that they make +4 baseplates for them(although I wouldn’t order any)which turns them into a 21 round magazine. I already have the Rock Tactical .45acp, and haven’t had any problems out of it. All I can say is after reading several reviews of this pistol. I bought one Hell Of A .9mm!!

Nice review! I had a mostly good experience with an Armscor Rock Standard 9mm 1911 and wanted to try one of these but never found one. Accuracy wasn’t great with mine but I heard much better reports on the Tac Ultra but just couldn’t find one. Found an HC Rock at a local gun shop and held it but was concerned that huge grip would hurt the geometry for me. I was still willing to try but found that Sig 9mm Tacops first and I guess I’m just as happy I did. Still, nice to hear that this Armscor product worked well for you. Martin seems like a good guy who genuinely want to make a good product.

I have been overwhelmingly impressed with the quality and shootability of the RIA guns I’ve tested. It seems they’ve found the right formula and the feedback in the comments from other owners has been positive. I do agree that the HC grip is wide and big hands really help. That Sig sounds awesome though. Any 9mm in a 1911 and I’m interested! Thank you and cheers Jake!

The finish doesn't hold up. The failures to extract can be annoying. The only holster I know for this is by 3I. The magazines don't come with witness holes. Getting used to the overall weight of this beast takes a little bit. The safety has sharp edges. The cheap plastic front sight tube has to be immediately replaced since it's not a fiber optic. The gun is amazingly accurate with the weight. Hardly any muzzle flip and it's so easy to shoot it's almost boring. I took it to a gunsmith who brought the trigger down to two and a half pounds. The grip safety is well made unlike some manufactures and can be forgotten.

I purchased the TCM variant about a month ago. Have not shot any of the 22 TCM rounds yet but it functions flawlessly with 9mm. Very soft shooting evening running +P loads. If using this for competition, the mags are sized to accommodate the 22 TCM round at 1.265” so loading to make major power factor using 124 or 147 grn 9mm projectiles shouldn’t be any issue. The weight of this pistol soaks up recoil. The 1 Mag the pistol came with will take 18 rounds. If purchasing additional mags make sure to get the correct one. You want the mag with the extended base plate. If you get the wrong ones you can put a Dawson’s extend pad on to make them function properly. A side note, the mags with Dawson extended base pads only hold 17 rounds. Also, P18 mags will work if you run an extended base pad.

I have a Kimber 45 and a Dan Wesson 10mm but I actually like my rock island double stack 45 more. GREAT GUN FOR GREAT PRICE, once you do the work on it which makes it great. Before I even shot the gun I did the work. Added small metal strip to the end of the trigger strap which reduced the pull length on the trigger. replaced the ambi safety with short lower low profile Wilson Combat. Polished the back-strap and all of the back strap/ back side so it is totally smooth to my hand on gripping. the grips on it are already perfect. the larger grip really truly is not that much larger and in fact I prefer it. The gun shoots and handles great. In short like I said in the beginning I like shooting this more than my every expensive 1911s. Did I mention that this gun with all I did cost may less than 700 dollars. I could buy all 3 of these for less than i spend on my Dan Wesson.
Get a 9mm, a 10mm and a 45 for the same price as one over priced Gucci gun and then you can pretty much say you have it all covered. Now after seeing this video you make me want to get the

I wanted one of these so bad because I'm a 10mm fan, 1911 fan, high capacity is a plus, and it uses the standard pattern slide so my holsters would fit it. It cycled flawlessly and ate various loadings regardless of projectile type or case material. Unfortunately it was not accurate. Groups at 7 yds looked like 00 buck. I shoot 1911 on the regular and stack holes. I really was disappointed how things turned out.

Just bought this gun in .45 ACP. My local gun shop had this and a Glock 41. The Glock cost less, the 41 has very good reviews, but no stock Glock is going to be as accurate as a well made 1911 platform. So I got Glock-like capacity with 1911 accuracy...now to find a duty holster to carry the new RIA and replace my Kimber TLE/RL II Custom I carry now.

The 1911 has gone through some changes, to be sure, over its lifetime - the 1911A1 overcame the tendency of the gun to shoot low owing to the flat mainspring housing, by introducing an arched housing that raised the muzzle, making it more effective in battle. The changes to the lead-in to the trigger by scalloping the frame, and moving the trigger face rearward for people with shorter fingers also was a plus, as was more visible sights, the memory bump on the grip safety, etc.
But it suffered from some critical flaws: hammer bite, from a hammer spur that reached over the beavertail and bit the web of the hand, for example - that was an inexcusable design flaw; no pistol that obliges you to change your grip to avoid injury, especially on a battlefield where every puncture wound is an infection site, and that compromises your focus on hitting the target, can be said to be "the work of genius." The Commander hammer or a protective extended beavertail was an absolutely mandatory change that needed to happen.
As time went on, flared mag wells to speed mag swaps, better serrations to speed cycling with wet and slippery hands, and more visible sights - later simply- instead of drift-adjustable sights - certainly added to the versatility of the weapon. But the Achilles heel was definitely the 7 shot magazine, and long, unwieldy stick magazines didn't cut it - not even the slight extensions to 8 and 9 rounds. An inability to fit lights, lasers, and rail-attached accessories also gradually drifted it away from currency in pistol design.
I've always loved the 1911, reared as I was on my dad's 1911A1 that he brought back from the war, but sought a solution to some of these problems, and found a partial in a set of grip and frame covers by Recuva Tactical CC3H that provided superior grip, a rebated trigger guard for off-side hand index finger control, and a short length of Pic rail to which I could attach a very small and handy Feyachi laser for quick point and shoot. I bought two - one for an Ejercito Argentina with a slightly extended beavertail, and one for a 1911 frame that I keep a Colt ACE .22 on. The EA also has several Mec-Gar 8 round mags to add that one more shot; my dad's gun remains as issued.
I found myself wanting some of the more up-to-date features of the 2011, however, and bought this RIA double-stack - just before the communist imbeciles in our statehouse decided that the way to stop wolves from biting was to put a muzzle on all housepets, and outlawed magazines with more than 10 rounds for the law-abiding. Got it, and spare mags, delivered just under the purchase deadline wire. The Commander hammer, extended beavertail, longer pic rail, and added features like mag well flare and - of course - far better sights, were frosting on the cake.
The jury is still out on the flat mainspring housing - although the larger grip does change the grip ergonomics significantly, so it may work out; I bought a replacement arched housing in case I just can't get along with it. The key feature, however, of the higher capacity magazine and greater weight from the heavier, pic-railed full length dust cover is that it also becomes a machine for firing .45 Super; the added weight soaks up recoil to a greater degree than for the standard 1911 A1, making it as controllable as an A1 shooting 230 grain ball.
That's a nice plus - that little bit (actually big bit) of extra power with no controllability loss downside makes for a real bonus, and makes the (now even cheaper than when I bought it) gun a bargain in my mind. I just put a buffer behind the recoil spring to minimize frame impact in recoil. I also confirmed ahead with RIA that the gun is more than strong enough for any +P ammo you can throw at it.
All in all, one of the most satisfying purchases of a handgun I've made, in what is one of, if not my most, favorite configurations. Of course, YMMV, but I've been extremely pleased with its shootability and quality, and would buy one again in a New York minute. Thanks for the video, and for reminding me of one of my favorite sidearms.

Those fireballs are epic! I own several 1911's; so I'm familiar with them. I understand why you didn't want to field the strip the gun on camera; but for those who are not experienced, I think it would have been helpful to explain that there are slight variations between some 1911 platform guns; when it comes to disassembly and reassembly. For example, full length guide rods vs. standard length, two piece guide rods; and in the case of this gun, the full length dust cover.
