The owner's and the employees' attachment to the cinema house has been beautifully portrayed in the video. Unfortunate but true that a large number of single screen theatres all over the country have permanently closed down. Others are at the point of closing shop for good.
A golden memory has gone, sadly we say like this theatre are few remain as single screen, our childhood teenage and more.belongs to these types theatre,
I was born in Minto road and since childhood I was seen most of movie in connaught place fav four odieon plaza regal Rivoli...in 80s Now missing that culture and time..
Decades of fun, entertainment and memories are connected to such Historical film venues. It is very saddening to see an old theater that graced numerous hit films of legendary stars go and closed down in this manner. Multiplexes may be the present choice and trend of today but, at the same time these historical single screen big cinemas deserve to be given due attention before they become extinct.
The best class here was not the DC/Balcony but something else. Though it was behind the 1st class on the ground floor, yet it was the most expensive one. One could sit on a grand sofa, made of expensive wood, all by yourself. If I am not mistaken, each block could sit 4 people and there was a lot of privacy, as you could lock the door too. One bad thing was, that the toilet was on the 1st floor, which was inside the DC/Balcony, so everytime someone went to the toilet, it disturbed the back benches. With Dolby Digital and a big screen, it was better than Rivoli behind it but could not match the splendour of then single screen Odeon and Plaza. When I came to Delhi in 2000, it already wore a worn out look and it seemed the seats and upholstery had not been replaced for 2 to 3 decades. But the good thing was, it was cheaper than Odeon and Plaza. However, the 1st and 2nd class was not the kind where you would want to sit. I watched Suniel Shetty's Dhadkan more than 5 times in Regal, it helped me lessen my home sickness and depression that I used to feel as this was the 1st time I had left home (Bihar, now Jharkhand) to study in Delhi. I didn't know then that Dhadkan would become such a big hit. I would sometimes take the 615 bus directly from JNU campus which would drop me straight at the gates of Regal (and also Plaza when I went there). Thanks to the free student bus pass. Regal, though not Regal at all, made me feel at home because of its dinginess, rusticity and worn out interiors, which resembled the cinema hall of my small township in Jharkhand. I must say that even when I went to Chanakya or Golcha or Delite, which were 5-starish, it was Regal, which for some reason, bound me to it, probably because of its 1930s oldish, British looks and the fact that it was in the heart of Connaught Place.
...like this gentleman weeping at the end, I couldn't control my self writing this comment as I had grown up n-joying movies in single screen with 70 mm/ stereo sound since '70',80,"90, 2010....n finally 3 single screen in our town were demolised n 1 closed as they couldn't resist against two giant multiplexes in our town in recent decades....very sorrowful exit of those happy memories....thanks.....🙏....
Sorry to know Regal is not there anymore. I used to go there and see movies there during my youth in Delhi but most of the single screen theaters from those days are gone. The ones that I remember and are not there anymore are Kumar, Mjaestic, Moti, Ritz, and probably others that I used to visit. Do not know what happened to Novelty, Sheila, Naaz, Westend, Amar, Excelsior. There were two others in Cannaught place area, Rivoli right next Regal and Palace.
Regal was a legacy..... I was born in 1983 and saw so many movies at Regal with my family to my Girlfriend.... I guess first movie that I saw on regal was Tezaab and last movie with my girlfriend Jab we met..... Problem was they didn't bring any changes in the theatre with the time .... Even when I watched the last movie Jab We Met, the sound system of the theatre was pathetic.... I couldn't hear the single dialogue properly whereas other theaters were using Dolby digital..... Anyways still Regal was the the most iconic and oldest classic theatre of not just Delhi and India and very special memories are attached to it....
Kal ke behtareen ke liye .....Aaj purani yaado se door hone me hi bhalai hai.........my childhood memories also separated when two cinema hall of my area closed recently.......I m 38 .... Once my grandfather would take me there when I was 3... every happy moments were completed after watching movies....... thanks mobile.... what have you done?

The place i am living in have many multiplexes which formerly had been single screens but had been converted looking at the current generation. So blaming just the government for your own incompetency is not justified.
Mr Pachauri those single screens have been converted to multiplexes with the help of something called land use change policy which these cinemas haven’t been given despite court orders and change in centre policy, so it’s not their incompetence that has lead to the closure of these cinemas but the failure and corruption and greed of the Indian beuracratic system which has failed them.
I saw a movie here in 1982, with my late father. Movie name Rajput, happy memory. That was my first time visit to New Delhi from Odisha.
