More than any other Mechwarrior game, 3 felt like a military operation. Immersive, with great voice acting, believable premise, and high but still plausible stakes. And the TACOPs guy's voice is fantastic for the role.
MW3 was my baptism in the Battletech universe, and soldified my love for big stompy murder robots. In no small part because of how realistically it portrayed the setting. This FELT like a military operation.
I suspect a bunch of people typed in "MW3 campaign intro" and found the "real" MW3. After realizing there was no Soap, Price, or Russians, they said "omg modernwarfare 3 is gai" and disliked it.
That's weird, MW4 felt like a cartoon compared to MW3. I hated how 4 looked sounded and felt, hated how all destroyed mechs went critical even when legged, hated the restrictive mech bay, hated how the cockpits looked worse than MW2's! MW4 was a mess. 3 had a narrow scope but was brilliant in a lot of ways.

Why did people dislike this? This is awesome and it brings back so many memories. Currently, I am unable to play MechWarrior 3 again and relive the campaign and gameplay. Seeing this on TH-cam is like a blessing. Thanks for the upload!

I still remember when I first watched this briefing with all the operation details and thinking "this sounds like a fun campaign, let's do this!" and then promptly going "What am I supposed to do NOW!?" when that whole battle plan immediately goes tits-up.
Thanks for posting this. Such a great intro and something you'd never find in games these days. Although you can fairly critique the briefing's visuals the actual content being delivered was excellent and actually employed principles of a realistic military raid with multiple insertions hitting soft targets and all forces rallying for extraction. The game eventually results in you being effectively an Army of 4, taking on all sorts of forces planet-side, the idea that this starts as a hit-and-run makes sense and is great story writing.
All I remember was every campaign mission with an annihilator mech was a true challenge, seeing them in the battle actually made me tense. All it took was one shot from the lbx10 cannon, then a gyro-overload, and oops! there goes my mech's leg!
What's what I liked. You're conducting a commando operation with no logistical support. Sure you could use ballistic weapons but when you run low on ammo you'll need to reconfigure to energy weapons.
@Monkeybonk Even with probe data that may be a few weeks or months old, the Jaguars were still weakened and had no time or resources to reallocate their stuff, so at least the stuff stayed where they stayed. Also, some missions had briefing data salvaged during the missions, so some intel becomes updated.
one thing that was in MW2 that was missing from 3 and 4 was CASE and internal Ammunition explosions. It allowed for pilots to take risks in order to get the most from your mech at the possible cost of longevity. It also made overheating a bigger danger. Get too hot and not only did you shut down, but you'd cook off your ammo and blow up from the inside. There was something creepy about that calm voice reporting "internal ammo explosion detected" seconds before you vaporized.
I always loaded up on clan ER large lasers. They built up lots of heat but you could snipe enemies from long range. ER PPCs are awesome too. Loaded up on 3-4 of those and as many heat sinks I could get, and it's a 1 shot kill on a leg.
The thing is was the Mech3 was so much more complete, not to mentioned polished. Mech 4 has a very slight graphical advantage over it, but it terms of sheer gameplay, I'd go for Mech 3. I mean, they took a step backwards for Mech4. The interface in 3 was better, your arms actually swivelled realistically, rather than a 90 degree barrel firing at 30 degrees. No MASC, no activateable AMS, no TC, no int-structure/crit slots system. The mechs were realistically damageable in 3. Just..polish.
I can't believe there were at least 150 dislikes. MW stood for MechWarrior ever since 1986, NOT Modern Warfare. MechWarrior had a very solid mythos up until the FedCom Civil War... ...what the hell. Most 80's and 90's games had difficulty, and a great fun factor. *headdesk*
i remember putting as many PPCs on a mech as i could in mechwarrior 3 i grouped them up and shot at a mech. Blew him up i overheated and was gone...LOL!!!
If you play the RPG, you do know... they're Capital class lasers IE they took lasers offa WarShips and turned them into emplaced weapons. Given that the smallest of them does over three times the damage of a PPC....
yeah i loved the machine gun and how it would take off the armor plating and u could see the inside of the mech w00t but in the newer ones...just ok. i liked dropping bridges on ememies. urg the pyramid lvl damn it was tough Annihaltor was the best
Yeah, I hated it when I immediately ran out of LRM10 ammo. I'm really good with lasers (M-Pulse Lasers ftw, whether Clan/IS). At least they gave you mass stocks of Machine Gun, LRM5 and AC10 ammo at first (hey, the AC10 is the best weapon for the first half of the game).
HALO 1 had a similar vibe, You start of with all the support in the world only to lose it all just before starting the mission..................and now you have only a pistol and an MRE :D
Each one of these games gets better... MW3 was one of my favorite games, until I played MW4, and then it was my favorite game LOL... such a pity that the franchise reboot game won't be coming out. It looks like one hell of a game.
Mech warrior 3 was the most accurate mech game in the series, mw4 was alittle..eh, sounded like something in the 1960's ball game if you played the colliseum matches.
Because at most mech ranges it would have no to-hit modifier and would melt a medium mech into a cool looking puddle after one shot? :p Unfortunately for you, they're about their tonnage in damage, so the smallest (A Naval Laser 45) would be around 45 tons, and the reactor needed to make it is far beyond what a normal mech's reactor can produce.
Because simple minded arcade playing CoD fans typed in MW3 intro expecting a crappy cliché overused story with point and click gameplay, only to find the real MW3 intro. It overloaded their brains because they instead found a game of intelligence and they disliked.

i don't agree, by the fact that the mechwarrior story was not only in the game but in moives, Tv shows, and books this has One story not alot of stories in one game like Halo or MW 2 this game was also of the best for its time
Yeah.. Microsoft just seems to hash games.. The only ones I have been somewhat happy with is CrimsonSkies. Starlancer was good as well but they started fresh so COUDLN'T hash it.

Art imitating reality their were many times my unit was like let’s get some. Then we insert and it goes all south quick.
Half Life: Opposing Force reminded me of this. One of the best video game openings out there I'd say.
MW2 Merc is my favorite, but THIS is the best one. Felt like a real campaign. Everything goes wrong from the start

Still the high-water mark for battle tech games. Graphics and sound were awesome for the time, sharper and more exciting than MW4.

Agree'd, mostly because you had to deal with ammo loadouts across all your lance and no mechs you found had many weapons already on it.

To solve the bouncing vehicle problem you have to go to dxdiag and set override to 60 to lock your refresh rate at 60.

There's a glitch which skips it on processors that are too fast
